    Havok Reed's NEW sketchbook

Well, I think I need to make a new sketch book and put things in here that are actually worth putting in here. I hated all of my old stuff and I didn't put anything worth while in it.

    So here we go

Deleted OLD junk from the first post that really isn't good at all. I left the one image as a reminder of how far I have come along since I made it. My poor, very empty, sketch book....I wish my drawings could automatically post themselves on here.

current WIP. This is driving me nuts. I feel like her legs are STILL off, even though I redrew them at several different lengths. I cant put my finger on on it.....

Im going to try to add my physical sketchbook to this one of these days...But for now, Ill just keep throwing in my ChoW pieces.

This is for 9 tailed goddess ChoW. I did a buncha research on the mythological 9 tailed foxes and came up with this. The Japanese Kitsune would cause women to consume a lot of beans and rice because it was the fox's favorite food.

Oh, you've got some nice works!
Just keep doing what you're doing, but keep in mind that backgrounds are pretty important too, and you want to make sure that the background shouldn't distract from the main character. In this last case, shadows are very, very important. You don't want to rush the last steps and make the entire image look hurried.

    Keep up the good work!

@Whimsnicole: Thanks! I agree, the background is very important. The very first image at the top was actually my first full attempt at doing everything, and had no clue how to go about a BG, that was over a year ago. The last one is still a WIP and its current background wont be what it is now, for sure. I was just having fun with the brush Ill post the final in here.

a couple more sketches I thought I would throw in here. Most of these I have been doing for character of the week. The dragon rider and alien chick are a couple months older, but this is, more or less, an art dump of things that are on my computer already. I figured I might as well share what I have.

Strong concepts and characters, but sometimes the backgrounds don't look very unified with the subject. I'm not really sure, maybe it's because the colors in the background are intense in some areas that can be distracting? Like the greenery in the illustration of the guy riding the dragon. Based on how the dragon is highlighted, I'd expect to see a bit of warm colors in the background.

Latest Chow entry, didnt have time to get a character sheet for it. I worked really stupid hours and I would come home too tired to do anything.

Also, a sketch of a DND character, I tried going for a comic book style type of shading. First time ever doing it.

U have some nice stuff here, I like ur designs.

Critique wise I think u should work a bit more on foreshortened volumes(like rised hand of first char and crossing leg of the last chow char) and on the proportion of the face on some girls( they have a bit of a ... "long" chin - 9 tailed goddess and last girl).
Also on the last girl i think that the upper leg gets too thin around the knee.
Some more "lively" coloring would help too.

I find very useful Vilppu for flow, bends and foreshortening, and the thing that eats much of my time now, color studies from reference.

    Hope that wasn't too much.

Not too much at all. I see what you mean by the chin looking too long. After looking back on them and comparing them to my Andrew Loomis books, it's actually that the jaw line is too far up. so I need to keep an eye on that when I do frontal faces.

Yea, anything with foreshortening I used reference on posemaniacs. Not the greatest site for that because I cant get a good, close up look at it, so things are bound to be off in that respect. I try my best to compensate.

Coloring is one thing I'm still struggling with. I'm no good at it right now, but trying to figure things out. I watch videos and tutorials on it. It just hasn't quite clicked yet.

    Thank for stopping by.

A quick study I did in response to the latest critique. observing the height of the jaw line in relation to the chin.

ding dong ding dong ding dong ding....It's been a while. Honestly, I have just been enjoying my summer while its still here. Not a whole lot of drawing. BUT that doesn't mean I have stopped.

So, Riot was holding a comic contest, and I LOVE League of Legends. SO, I drew something for it! Unfortunately, I did it at the last minute so I only spend a few hours on it, it was very very rushed. I was super super busy and was barely able to squeeze it in, but I'm happy with it! So check it out. For those of you who know what LoL is, you should know who these champions are and the joke behind it.

I have a lot of stuff, but I am too damn lazy to post it in here. I really should so that I can document my progress.

Well, let's see... I don't have many sketches to show because I don't save the sketch after I finish it, or I just dont have the picture in general.

I will try to make more consistent entries as I make stuff. I have a new tablet monitor so sketching and painting has become much faster.

I tried my best to put these in order by date.

Some things I need to work on that I can see:
1.) Folds in clothing....this is a big one.
2.) Lighting and shadow...This is something I need to put more time into
3.) Brush work...I have a bad habit of over rendering
4.) Color... For some reason I over saturate my things and pick too bright of colors. There is a technique I still need to try for color picking.

    Thanks for stopping by.

From what I have previously learned on my last portrait study, I have applied those styles/techniques to a more refined and better piece.

Currently a WIP, the positioning of his head is weird, gonna fix that. Also I think that his armor needs adjusting in size and shape in some places too. Good thing they are just blobs right now.

I don't want to meet this guy on the battlefield! Looks quite scary... no mercy to expect from him. The blue background works great in contrast to the reddish design, but I think the orange is a litte bit to intense - somewhat drains the color of his skin. I do like the design

Yea it is a bit too saturated. I was kind of going for a twilight mood, where the sun is just setting and the sky gets super orange-ish / blue.

Final! about 9 hours. I learned a lot. specifically with lighting and what I can do next time. As well as the female form. I felt like this one was okay to leave her a little more toned because she is a survivalist, not just some hot chick with big hooters.
