Start of the day drawings! =]
Last edited by gurzy; May 20th, 2011 at 09:41 AM. Reason: Fixing and moving pics from first post to second post.
My process in doing this image :http://browse.deviantart.com/photogr...et=24#/d28y2vj
Should I continue to push the piece or should I just do another one? I see many mistakes I can fix but every time I fix one I find another...and another...and another.
Would I improve better if I keep pushing my pieces to my fullest extent? Sometimes I doubt myself because all i'm doing is copying from a picture. =/
Classes start today!
Ahh classes start today! It won't stop me from posting my studies/ drawings everyday though =).
My 30 second posemaniacs is getting better! yeaahhhhhhh! I used a small hard brush to mimic pencil sketch like i'm used to seeing but it makes me pet marks more though which I hate =/. So frustrating that the feeling between me using traditional media and digital are different. Here's to hoping practice will change that.
The rest are Loomis studies. More to come later after my classes!
Morning practices from posemaniacs and loomis studies and unfinished WIP.
I haven't done color portraits in a while and I dunno how I was supposed to start so I just went with the flow and put colors down ugh... how could I have improved it to be closer to the photo I referenced :http://browse.deviantart.com/photogr...angry#/d11aop4
I will update the WIP to the finished state tonight.
*edit: Did another portrait that im unhappy with ugh...guess we have our bad days.
ref used: lost the link sorry =[.

Mm.. parents visiting. I tried to squeeze in some practices. Will probably update them tomorrow. Cheers.
yo you are doing pretty good man. i'm surprised that nobody has said anything yet.
i think i can help your problem with petting your marks (i do it to though). When you are drawing from posemaniacs and you are drawing on paper use a sharpie or a pen that is very broad or bleeds alot. it makes you conserve your strokes so that the image does not look like a mess (quite honestly though when i did posemaniacs 10 months ago i would scratch up the paper all the time). hope i said something worthwhile, if not, oh well. your portraits are nice to look at too.
Sorry for the last few days! My parents were visiting this whole weekend and haven't had a chance to update/practice as much as I should. Though I'm happy to say my linework and rendering skills have much improved these past days.
@geoxzs3
Thanks for the kind words and tip with the sharpie/pen. I will definitely try that out some time and try to find a scanner to post >.<

I laughed at the evolution of the guy flipping us off. Great work! I especially like the way you defined the forms from the colours you laid down earlier.
I'd like to see some landscape and perspective work done the same way.![]()
Please check out my Deviantart page: http://lucidstillness.deviantart.com/
Also, please check out my sketchbook thread!

Whoo!
Today's a good day!
@Ultarant
Lol, thanks man. I'll put a landscape/perspective work sometime in the future then.
Here is my morning posemaniac and an attempted ref. lineart/sketch of a 3d model/s I will do. Yes it's Dr. Nefarious from Ratchet and Clank and Zim and Gir from Invader Zim! xD. The models are due next Tuesday so I'll show you the finished products by then =p.
What happens when you put 3 of the worlds greatest idiots together?

I love how you show your painting process! Really helpful.
Ahh! Starting Loomis studies over for the last time. No more half-assed studies from me ever again! I WILL CONQUER YOU STUDIES!!!!!!!
@TheFallenAngel
Thank you for your kind words. I'm glad somebody likes them! Will post more in the future
Ideal male proportion study from Loomis...next is Ideal female proportions. The woman is supposed to be leaning against something but I couldn't get it right xD.
Whoo made it!
Did 4 portraits in 1 day yay! A personal record for me haha.
BOOM HEAD SHOT COLLAGE _01

Invader Zim, and an art style that reminds me of the movies A Scanner Darkly and Waking Life, love it! Those are great films by the way if you've never heard of them. Very philosophical and deep.

Time flies!
Wow time is flying today. Just wanted to take a break from practicing to cool off a bit and it's almost midnight. I was watching Wakfu, an french animation. 'So Cool!' as Yugo would say haha.
@And All That Jazz
Ooh I've watched A Scanner Darkly, and thanks for 'Waking Life'. I'll check it out. I'm surprised my rendering style reminds you of Scanner Darkly haha, I never really analyzed how I drew/rendered. Then again i'm trying to emulate photos. Thanks for stopping by!
Anywhoo here are today's studies by Loooooooooooooooomis.
Finally finished this big guy!
I'm really finding a painting process i'm comfortable with or just getting used to painting in general now ^^.
1st: Layout the people with general values
2nd: Define form and broaden values
3rd. More defining and lightest lights/darkest darks.
Heyy, you're making good progressKeep going! I'm a noob myself, inspired by Algenpfleger's sketchbook (still not done going through it, i've just reached page 30! )
Apart from posemaniacs, there's another similar drawing tool called the Gesture Drawing Tool.. The only difference is that it features photos of actual models instead of 3d figures.. Also has the similar timed exercise with photos of animals..
Thenn there's the Spartan Camp in the community activities here.. That's a weekly drawing challenge where you post 50 gesture drawings every week and an optional study.. Since you're already doing plenty of gesture drawings, this would be a great place to post them and get some critique
Keep drawing!
Having one of those time crisis crazy days. Almost finished with my Gir model, just got to texture it and light it. Will show tomorrow. I tried squeezing in a really fast speed painting in, ref used. Will prolly update it and start/finish a set of asian clothing practices.
@ Sharon J
Hey! Thanks for the heads up on Spartan Camp and Gesture Drawing Tool link. I will definitely check those out tomorrow.![]()
Watching your progress is a delight! The portraits are my favorites and the pose studies make me jealous. I should get into that too! I've saved the website from posemaniacs for ages now, and recently started my own sketchbook. Now should be the right time to start, I suppose.
Anywho, keep up the good work!
Ahhhhhh sorry. I tried my hardest to post before the end of the day. Drats!
@Mila
Aww, your comment made my night! I'm glad you liked them. And you should definitely start a sketchbook for sure!
Here is my model!
Assignment: Primitive Modeling
Rules: Cannot extrude or manipulate individual vertices in any way. No textures.
Tricks used: Duplicate with transforms and just basic shapes.
This was a fun exercise. I guess it is a warm up for us in modeling and gives us a different way of thinking when modeling? Haha I'm trying to find a reason for this assignment anyways...really impractical imo.
I still got to do asian fashion paintings! GRRR ANOTHER ALL NIGHTER YES?
Ahh here's one of the japanese fashion portraits I redid, I drew more slowly this time, no time crunching ^^., more to come! I kind of like painting knees now for some reason. It makes me happy loooool.

Feedback is appreciated!
Thanks for stopping by my sketchbook!Very nice studies. I love the painting of the black and white girl. That seems more finished and well defined. I'd love to see more paintings defined like that. Your gestures are nice, but try and use longer strokes to capture the motion of the figure. It will give your gestures more energy and life. You're doing great! Keep it up!
I was doing a practice painting yesterday and after almost struggling to being finished I realized I wasn't really learning as much as I should be. I was painting without thinking as a painter. All I was doing was copying! I wasn't thinking about warm or cool colors or trying to harmonize a picture together. It drove me to redo my picture with that in mind. I want to be good at art! I will get better!!!!!!!!!!!!
ref used: http://browse.deviantart.com/?qh=&se...ashion#/dnilj5
@Aresa
Thanks, I will strive for more finished paintings and practice my strokes a lot more!
You rarely see people who can so masterfully draw convincing facial expressions. Well done. They are awesome.

True progress means matching the world to the vision in our heads.
But we always change the vision instead.
Wow, the progress in your digitals on this page alone is pretty incredible. THe blocking in of values and colors is looking great, and you're def going in the right direction. I'd say the only thing that might help you is to push a piece to finish. It'll make the blocking in/studies that much easier, it'll seem so short in comparison
Nothing from me atm, I'll be back for sure, I'm interested to see how you progress, just keep going!
edit: oh and i love the rendering on your robot, however, what he's standing on looks rushed and detracts from the image IMO
Sick the whole week =/
Hey guys sorry for not posting for a while. I got hit with the stomach flu last week and couldn't do much art besides school work/studying, but I'm much better now.
@HAJiME
Thank you for looking at my arts! And thank you ^^. Compliments like that make me want to work harder!
@Dope Fiend
Thank you ^^. I will strive for more rendered works! And thank you for critique. I love seeing on how I could improve on things.
Okay! So here are my arts!
1st model is a simple jellyfish I had to create for my 3d modeling class
Ideas for 2nd jellyfish design, I couldn't do more however because this is when I caught the stomach flu bug.
2nd model is a jellyfish of my own design. I'm slightly happy with this one since it is my first time making a head mesh. It's supposed to be an evil jellyfish that's sucking the brains and stuff of the victims head haha.
Last set of pictures are practice portrait. I would have honestly stopped at step 01, but I remembered a lot of you wanted to see more rendered portraits, so I pushed myself on this one. Thanks Aresa and Dope Fiend for helping me push myself and everyone else for their nice compliments, you guys really help me keep going.

I see a lot of mistakes towards the end, because I sort of stray from my foundation drawings after a while and towards the end some things are off...I noticed this in a lot of my other portraits too, so I will work on that. I learned a lot though ^^.
Level Up!
A good way to start up February!
Another practice! This time a fan art. After doing this picture my way of thinking towards painting has developed! So I guess this is a milestone for me. I'm starting to think of drawing in forms instead of marks; utilizing directional brush strokes. And slowly understanding depth with color. This was done with only default brush. Will probably add a hard brush with future drawings I do since a lot of my drawings look a bit fuzzy. Need to help direct the eye ^^.
Adam Jensen isn't a robot....yet. He's also not angry here.

@1:14
Slightly ticked off tonight. Not going to rant here and ruin the atmosphere though; tried to put my sorrow into drawing because I haven't done it before, I usually keep my emotions locked in my head.
One of my childhood heroes, Tomba. He's played a part in my life growing up. I hope I didn't disgrace him too much.
2nd lineart I ever did in digital art. I'm growing fond of doing lineart now.
hey gurz im just curious do u do much physical art on paper or are u mostly associated with digital?
Woke up at 2 am and had a craving to draw!
@Jesus Food
Mm..I just doodle when I do traditional art, this semester my art teachers were kind enough for me to sit in their figure drawing 1 and 2 class for free. So I will try to scan them in. I don't really know how to tweak the scans yet in photoshop. I heard you mess with levels and such @.@. I'll try to figure that out this week. Tips on what to tweak would really help. But yeah I'm mostly associated with digital.
Early morning speedpaints; 25 minutes each
this time I added a hard brush in my repertoire. Easier to paint in stuff. and no more back and forth strokes from my previous paintings; like the asian portrait sets ;those took 3-5 hours to do. Looking at them compared to this. I feel ashamed for not combining the hardbrush in my previous studies. They really really help with your workflow.
