Painter 12 development?

If there are any clues to be gleaned about the development of Painter 12 from the results of their Quest for the Best contest, then I fully expect to see a "Jeremy Sutton" filter that automagically takes a photo, clones it while adding a puppy or child, and then randomly splashes around inappropriate and migraine inducing blobs of pure primary colours... in fact I can exclusively reveal a screenshot of Corel Painter 12

Seriously though, I use Painter 11 daily and hope that they will improve on the artistic side and their attempts to represent real media... plus as many speed, stability and UI improvements as they can throw at it.

Hey Ikken, got you point, but its cs5 faster than cs3? i dont think so, using the latest tecnology with the newest hardwares it only makes them to work as the same speed like old versions. People love sai software, and doesnt use multicores, using multicores its no warranty for making a fast software, rotating its a hell in cs5 makes the brushes to lag a lot on my multicore computer, even with 8 gigs of ram, and painter nails it with not even making my computer to produce weird over heating sounds.


Forget about the power, i just want a better improved customizable workspace and bugs free, that will make you work faster, than having 32 gigs of ram and 8 processors at the same time.

I have a 8800GT 512MB and rotating in CS5 was ultra fast and smooth, I think some HD5xxx have issues with 2D drawing, I've read a test on Tom's Hardware a while back but I don't know if AMD fixed the issue.

Why? PSD files are Adobe and well Adobe should do that.

I really wish the photopainting stuff was a component install instead of tacked on. Not much I can do about it but wish.

I totally agree Arshes! The problem we have is that the photography functionality is presumably one of Painter's big selling points and therefore it'll remain as an important feature. However, it shouldn't be at the expense of Painter's core functionality - a digital painting application.

I like your general idea about components (or plug-ins) that we can add or remove as required. I wouldn't mind if components such as photo-painting were there by default, if I had the option to remove them. It'd be a great way to streamline the functionality to suit the individual user and would also be less intimidating for new users as superfluous functionality wouldn't be there cluttering up the interface. As you say though... it's a bit of dream!

From reading the opinions of other Painter users, I get the impression that most aren't difficult people to please at all. What I mean by that is that Painter users aren't asking for anything unreasonable and aren't demanding the impossible. In fact, if Painter 12 was merely more stable and had decent performance just about every one of us would upgrade instantly... even though such a release ought to be part of a free patch!

My puppy painting had no photo-filtering, cloning, or migraine blobs of color, just an adorable, 120 lb. Mastiff/Lab mix named Boris; and it won him an iPad and a pile of Corel software, too. Now if only I can teach him to use the Apple gestures on the iPad, and keep him from looking at kitty porn...



I agree there were a lot of heavily filtered, and manipulated images submitted in the contest, and such "tricks" more often than not get in the way of real creativity.

LOL Congratulations! I wasn't having a go at your image. I was referring only to the images involving photo cloning techniques in Painter (and the tendency for them involve pets or kids). There was room for this contest for all types of art - using all of Corel's various products - photomanipulation done well can be very effective - photo cloning however just feels wrong to me though (and I think it's set to spread more with Photoshop CS5 and it's mixer brush). Sadly photo cloners seem to be a huge part of Painter's user base. I'm praying that version 12 will have something in it to satisfy all users.

I agree. Photo cloning has a very pseudo-art look to it that I find hard to like. It can all too easily become a crutch.

I get approached by people all the time explaining to me that their kid likes art and asking what software I recommend to help them learn. I usually recommend the graphite and paper software combination - I don't think programs like Painter are really that helpful in learning because of the presence of so many bells and whistles that substitute for the hard work it takes to understand composition and color.

People always want an easy solution (myself included). But some skills just can't be gained via easy software gimmicks.

The sense I had from the contest is that many people are fascinated with the gimmicks, but aren't challenging themselves to actually develop artistic skills. I may be wrong, of course, but that was my impression.

I think there's a little misunderstanding - PSD files created (or at least edited) in photoshop are previewable, like here:

the first few images are done in painter x only, the last one was edited in PS cs3, and it's the only one with a thumbnail
so it's something corel should consider adding.

Actually not always. Depends on your system. I have had PSD files I created in CS3 no thumbs.

That's good... At least Painter didn't die off. I was getting scared. My brother forwarded me an email of corel having some kind of sale, I think, and I was wondering what the hell they were doing.

Its good to see it is in testing I would love to be in on it being an artist and computer tech I can tell a software glitch from a hardware coding bug(there are many when going from 32bit to 64 bit in software). I started doing art in computer long before Adobe was around as I go back to coding as graphic to drawing with trackball in Deluxe Pain on my Amiga. I beta the heck out of Photoshop 3 and PH5 is trying to do too much Painter never did that I feel and was one of the best drawing programs I has seen and it got better when I saw 8.
The problem with 11 I feel is due to too many demands of trying to get one program to work of too many hardware platforms that can and I feel has cause the problems. I hope they open testing to people some time I just feel it would be great to test the program..

Damn you weren't kidding, I just saw some of his works and I couldn't believe how shitty they were, why would Corel want to be associated with Jeremy Sutton? Oh wait it's Corel, they probably even asked him for input on top of making those promotional videos for Painter 11.

Yeah, I have it enabled in CS3 and 4 and still doesn't do it. It's been mentioned as a common problem, some offering some pay dll solutions and others mentioning a fix for 32 bit systems that don't work in 64 bit. MS and Adobe pointing the fingers at each other. *Shrugs*

hey guys, at the Moment i am in Ottawa at the Corel HQ giving them some in house testing and feedback for 12, I believe that it will be the best painter ever and i am very excited about its launch,

on a side note i have Met Jeremy Sutton several times, he is an very inspiring artist that has dedicated his life to creativity and helping to empower other artists, regardless what opinion you may have about his art, he is an amazing individual that would go out on a limb to help any of you if you had a question about painter. His techniques may seem unorthodox but he has built a successful career as a full time digital fine artist and there is allot we all could learn from the model he has created. Seeing some of the unsolicited bashing is inappropriate and unwelcome in this discussion,
lets try and keep it classy guys.
