Which DVD/download would be good to start with?

I've made reasonable progress teaching myself to draw using traditional media (I've posted some pics in a sketchbook thread), but I want to make the jump into the digital world. I own Photoshop CS4 and a graphics tablet already.

What would be a good DVD/download (or other resource) to start with? I'm looking for something that's more about how to use Photoshop for digital painting - eg, what brush or what layer mode to use when, and why ... so that I understand the tools before I start trying to make actual paintings.

    Suggestions?

    Thanks,
    Lindsay

Hi Lindsay and digi, what you need to know is that MB tutorials are more "progress" videos than step-by-step tutorials for beginners. However, instructors say a lot about their choices and why they use certain tools and what those tools do I'd start with Nox or Jason Chan. Perhaps Whit Brachna if you're into environments, although I've only seen trailers for his videos. Good luck

Well, I need some of those step by step videos myself, and I own a few jason chan videos, they don't really seem to help me in my digital painting progress, since I just lack the basics in how to use photoshop for digital painting.

Can anyone here recommend said step by step beginner videos?

There's something good in all of them, but I'd maybe start with - Michael Bierek - The Mystery of Form.

Whits are awesome too, Environment Speed painting and Masking Demo are the ones I found most helpfully.

Lynda.com has great and thorough tutorials on Adobe software including Photoshop, After Effects, and Illustrator my university lets me access these for free, but for a month's subscription to the entire site it's only $25 /mo. $37.50 if you want the premium membership which includes instructor exercises.
