A warm Hello to you all. I'd like to half-cowardly share some of my sketches,and i've become rather attached to the community here. Im a Welshman who always draws passively but never when I was younger did I put in the time nor focus to improve. Im now 23,and although im realising a few things arguably late ive been drawing a lot more this last 6 months or so,very dilligently the last month and a half.

I have a lot more time coming up soon spare to expand and become a lot better with drawing,but for now I hope I don't get too bashed for sharing my first few steps into clarity.

Any other Welsh-artists around? Cardiff here

TacoMeat: appreciate the link taco,im familiar with loomis and I try and at least study some plates for an hour or so a day,one of my main focusses at the mo is planes among other things..when i was younger my scribbles tended to be chaotic whirls of lines and I seemed more content in capturing the emotion in the essence rather than spending too much time on the anatomical correctness. Now,i appreciate the importance of it more! :3 Thankyou for the encouraging words and stopping by,it means a lot \o/

Hey, you have improved a lot from the day you have joined i guess. Your doing well mate just keep up the good work. Try to learn more about human anatomy as well as little more about lighting and shadows. Try to get a copy of Andrew "Loomis - Successful Drawing". i guess itll help you a lot.

Anyways keep working hard and practice everyday. itll payoff nicely. Good luck mate.

Bridgman has little books and a big "complete" book out. I reccomend the little books, both Constructive Anatomy and Life Drawing first, have been the ones I'd heard, then look at The Human Mahine and the other one. I currently have in my possession constructive anatomy, the human mahine and the Big Book, but this afternoon I expect Life Drawing to show up on my doorstep. Additionally, I have ordered The Human Figure by David Rubins, on suggestion of Marshall Vandruff in his streaming anatomy class. Bridgman can be a bit vague, but he really tells you how to simplify the figure and piece it together, whereas Rubins is pretty dry, but very precise. Going back and forth gives you a pretty good grasp, or so I gather. I highly reccomend that streaming class, when you can get it. Marshall is an excellent teacher, and the class made me really excited about doing my studies again.

I don't suggest getting the Complete Guide to Drawing From Life, beause it was not put together by Bridgman himself, and so it has some problems with the locations of the plates, and corresponding plates with the text. In my copy, there is an entire page of plates that is printed in upside down. I don't know if this has been fixed in newer versions.

As for your work, be careful about drawing what you see and not the symbols in your head. Mostly I see that happening with eyes, which is pretty normal, I think. I have a problem with it myself. The construtive anatomy book has sections on the forms of the facial features, and fitting them into the fae. I haven't done my studies on them though.

So, you spoke about "taking on the art world," eh? What do you propose?

Appreciate all the Bridgman feedback-it'll be very helpful and ill aim for the recommended book (s) - ive never had the misfortune of seeing a book with upside down plates D: but yes,variety is the best spice of study.

eyes..my god,totally hit the mark there. Ive always wanted to be able to draw amazing faces as my focus..and im always draw heads and faces but the eyes *_* ive studied them lots and thought i understood the principles but time and time again i draw them too big or over stretched lengthways eeeuuurgh. A good portrait book i picked up was 'drawing the head by william Maughan' he doesnt greatly explain a lot of the techniques he uses (or at least i find a lot of the terminology flood to be a tad offputting) but its a good book all the same.

I reckon i need to set up a mirror in my room for self-face study.
Gonna do some eye studies MOAR them.

As for the world,i PROPOSE a simple partnership of sorts: a few artists dedicated to not only regular and regimed advancement but also the kindness to badger each other to keep progressing. Any communication medium open,and you have to have the dedication and seriousness to push yourself

re: eyes: Don't forget that the eye is a sphere that needs to fit inside the skull. I've heard that the face is 5 eyes across, but I've never been able to draw like that. Too fiddly and rigid.

And that group sounds awesome. I would be very much interested.

like the gap between the eyes being one eye between..i always seem to slip that.

It's less of a group and more of a collective,a band of souls united across locations and time. Step one,throw out ever possible communication medium you have- throw me a private message with your msn,email,skype anything. Ill lay out a random template of ideas for a mail and you can mull it over and think of anything to add. Im thinking of like setting us particular things to do on certain days of the week like a still life day for example.

nice work and colours, but you're not really doing much construction. try thinking of shapes more in 3d, and not as flat lines on a paper. sounds esoteric but it's the basic for creative drawing. Loomis has some great exercises about creating primitive shapes in perspective that'll really help you

What exacly is the "wtf" in the Bridgman studies? Don't worry too much about it maybe, some of Bridgman's plates in his book are made of drunk drawing. That's why I'm combining his stuff with Rubins. I know of at least two plates in Brudgman's stuff where he's drawn impossible things, like a little toe on the inside of the leg, and so on. Just take a deep breath and keep going. X3

edit: Also, I think (without actually going and looking) that the shape things are in Fun With A Pencil. Not sure.

i had a look through the loomis pdfs and grabbed a handful of pages i think may be right,not sure if it's tied to one book..most things aren't. As for the wtf thats just my sense of humour im afraid D: i looked at the leg and thought WHATTHEHELLISTHAT. Just like getting my thoughts down as im going,im sure not discouraged but thanks for the encouragement anyway tulo ^_^ been sketching a lot since the last update,need to have a fight with my scanner this evening.

Haha, I feel that way about classic anatomy studies sometimes too. Is that really what anyones hand looks like? Cause mine is sorely lacking in lumps and muscles by comparison. But Bridgman is a good jumping board. It's where I started.

A modern anatomy book that's really good is Anatomy for the artist. I'll post the pic because there are older books with the same title.

If you can track it down in a library, because it's pretty expensive. Your faces generally have a nice feel to them, even though there are some mistakes. Keep studying and practicing but remember that pure realism isn't the only ideal.

You're doing a lot of improving here (I wouldn't be able to use a mouse in photoshop. SO frustrating) Keep going! Also, do you ever do any quick 2 minute still lifes to warm up? I find them really good for when I have art block.
