Presenting Instructor James Gurney - Art Inside

The Art Department Faculty, John English and I have all been working hard to add a number of phenomenal instructors, presenters, and adjunct faculty to the program in order to deepen the knowledge base and information available to students at TAD.

Starting in October, the esteemed James Gurney, creator of www.dinotopia.com and the creator of the best art blog on the internet, will be joining us to share his knowledge with all students in TAD, covering a variety of important topics, lectures, and presentations which further the educations of TAD students. http://gurneyjourney.blogspot.com/ (This is a must read blog for all artists so if you have not clicked that, do it! You will learn and see a lot of great stuff). We are very fortunate to have James support in assisting the TAD students and I hope everyone will take a deeper look at his world and art.

I can personally express that James had a major impact on me when I was first learning to be a concept designer, years before first brainstorming Massive Black with Andrew Jones or founding this website. I was attempting to learn to build worlds, and when I found Dinotopia, I discovered not only the level of academic painting and composition that i had come to love, but absolutely brilliant universe design, industrial design, costume design...the works. James Gurney is an inventor of worlds at a level that has him up at the very top of the field. I have been a reader of his blog since it first started and am a huge fan of his work and abilities. I learned some of the foundations of my own craft from studying his works while I was in college, and am overjoyed to have him coming to TAD to assist in helping othe TAD students.

In the coming days, when he returns from his trip, James will be stopping by ConceptArt.Org and this forums of ours to say hello and I hope that everyone gives him a warm welcome. We have added him as a featured artist atop the site and look forward to seeing what everyone thinks of his blog too!

With that said, here are some of his fabulous works! Please feel free to welcome him to the site.

    Fantastic news

I'm a big fan of James. Log onto his blog every day. Have his imaginative realism book as well as the Dinotopia series which are brilliant and am eagerly awaiting his colour and light book.

Hey, thanks, Jason and everybody for the great welcome. I'm fired up about visiting the SF pod of TAD in October, right on the eve of the release of my new book "Color and Light: A Guide for the Realist Painter." Because of last-minute color tweaking, it might be coming out in November, but the Keynote presentation will give you some of the key stuff.

For those of you who get ImagineFX in the USA, you should be getting a free Color and Light poster along with the new issue. Hope to meet a bunch of you at some of the art schools and studios that Jeanette and I will be visiting, including DreamWorks, CCA, Trion, Acad of Art, SJSU, and a bunch of others.

And remember: Painting is easy, thinking is hard!

I discovered his Dinotopia books about 4 years ago and was really impressed. The books increased my interest in art and illustration.

    Hi James

Just a quick hello and to say that the poster included in this month's ImagineFX is great... although seeing it made me panic and run to Amazon. I thought the book might have come out and my pre-order hadn't came through. All was well though. If your new book is even half as good as Imaginative Realism then it will be worth reading and re-reading many many times.

Oh wow. I actually have the Dinotopia book with those pictures in them. So much better than the film and such a tremendous inspiration. Thank you so very much for that, James Gurney.

    Cool!

Welcome Mr Gurney! I'm more a sculptor than a painter but I find your work very inspirational. I like your use of models to work out lighting. At some point I hope to build some sculptures (more stop-motion style puppets really) to photography outside in naturalistic settings. Your work will definitely be a touchstone when I do it. Not that this is going to happen really soon; I have to finish a T.rex skeleton I'm working on first. It's only taken me a year and a half so far.....

I look forward to your contributions to the site.

I am unbelievably excited about this! I met James Gurney when he came to speak at CCAD, and have been very inspired not only in his work, but in the amount of thought he puts into the entire creation process and knowledge of art history. I really admire and identify with his approach to design every facet of a world, and am currently in the same process with a work of my own.

I've been trying to gather up the courage to ask him some questions about the undertaking of writing a book for over a year now, and I hope that being a member of TAD will put me into a better position to ask.

Thank you whoever had a hand in the recruitment, and thanks to Mr. Gurney directly!

I am so excited to see Mr. Gurney on here as I was so disappointed when I couldn't make it to his exhibit in Delaware when I lived there. I own the book Imaginarium and I love how you create your own models for lighting reference and such.
