    Launch Day

Hello everyone! I just finished this piece, took me about a month. I wanted to do a crowd scene, and something where I could nerd out a bit -

    - It is a secular society that values tradition, and its greatest tradition is science. In this world, all grand scientific endeavors are met with great public enthusiasm, pomp and pageantry. Here astronauts are led to the launch pad by throngs of adoring crowds.

    Some close ups:

And thumbnail studies for the painting:

    Sweet

Looks great! Love the mix of more fantasy looking costumes with a sci fi piece. Would love to see the sky rendered as nicely as the rest of the piece is. I want to see more!

This is a beautiful piece. I really like the composition and how you used shadow and light to group the crowd. I have to say, there's a few things which bug me a little; the astronauts don't seem to belong to the same universe as the rest of the people. I see you used orange here and there to try and establish a relationship, but I feel the costume designs are just too distinct and they even look to be of a different ethnicity. Without reading the description, I thought these people had arrived from another planet and were now heading home.

Finally, the head popping up at the bottom seems to belong to a very short guy. I'm not quite sure, but it looks to me like it should be raised a bit higher.

Anyway, that's just my thoughts, so take it with a pinch of salt. It's a great illustration regardless.

Very cool! It has a Wings of Honneamise vibe to it.

Beastie: Thanks for the feedback, I was messing with the sky for a while, trying to find the right amount of render, will keep it in mind!
Benjaminba: Crowd scenes are so tough, thanks for pointing out those things, I'd go and correct them but I'm so tired of working on this piece haha. As for costume, I wasn't sure what to do really, spacesuits seem out of place in any society
rlederer: Thank you! Can you believe I have yet to see that film? I REALLY want to.
BAN_KAI: Value control is my excuse, but it's not a good one, I should watch that more carefully. Thank you!

I really like the light and the atmosphere on this piece, particularly the light hitting the astronauts; the orange makes a nice contrast with the more subdued tones of the surrounding environment.

The only thing I find a bit jarring is the pantslessness of the dancers following them. It just seems odd and is kinda hard to take seriously.

amazing composition, it is great as it is right now but maybe you could give it a little bit more detailing i understand that you are overwhelmed with so much time working in one piece but i think if you let it stay still for a while and then come back to it youll see it differently, i say this because i think this piece can even be more awesome
    Good Work!

Really enjoyed seeing this image, you hit the light dead on, nice saturated pools on the focal points in the composition, good attention to detail without overdoing it. An excellent portfolio piece. I do think some minor tweaks could be made, but its a matter of preference, and its not a big issue (such as atmospheric perspective haze with a larg soft brush to further the effect of the cloudy day).

Would have loved to have seen what you would have done with the second thumbnail as well, very dynamic top down.

Oh and this does kinda remind me of Wings of Honneamise, you should watch it sometime, not the best anime but a good one if your like that sort of thing.

    Again excellent work!

Excellent concept. I believe that dedicating yourself and your idea will really produce a very good outcome. With your work, I remember the movie Armageddon, where science is a major factor and also, heroes were born.

Great example of how to direct focus. You've got SO much going on, yet I know where to look and my eyes take me on a journey around the canvas from that focal point.

    Great work.
