    Summer Sketchbook with Traditional Oils

Heyo, so its been a year now since being at Ringling College and its been a helluva time! I believe i have grown as an artist and as someone who can visually communicate ideas down properly. Since attending the school, i have started a blog where i post some sketches and finished work. I have gotten out of practice of personal drawing.

But since school has gotten out I need to get back to drawing and painting. Before I went to school, CA.org helped me out a lot, thanks to a strong community. Hopefully that's not all lost If you'd like to see my old sketchbook it can be found here.

So this sketchbook will be for musing and ideas that i can get some feedback on. These will most like be in the forms of pictures taken, but hopefully i get to a scanner soon enough.

Some goals for my work will include:
-interaction, my drawings/paintings need to react to different subject matter and environment
-create a strong stylistic drawing abilities
-draw from life on a daily basis

To start out, some recent sketches posted on my blog, with more to come in the next day or so. I have also included some process steps of some paintings i have worked on and other things i have worked on this past semester.

hey man, it's coming together! glad to see you're painting so much! (way more than i am lately)

for your line drawings, i see you leaning a little towards how Tensai (Lok Jansen) draws. check out his stuff on flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/lokjansen/

your stuff is different of course, but there are things you and lok have in common in some of these drawings.

in #3, the shadows look a little too "black" but it could just be the lighting in the photograph. i do use black when i paint, but almost never by itself unless it's got a special illustration reason. generally speaking, i mix in some crimson or cad red with it to change it's temperature.

you're playing around with colors in an interesting way, much more free than i am with it. but i'd suggest maybe easing up on the saturation a little. what you're doing is right, but i'd hold off on the saturation until the very end. in #11 for example, the reflected light on the fence is awesome, but it's just *slightly* too saturated, i think. if i squint my eyes it looks awesome, but it's just a wee bit too saturated. for the green grass in the dog picture, it's kind of difficult...the grass is going to be more saturated than a brown and white dog... but then again, grass only turns that yellow-green in the sunlight, so you'd expect to see the white's of the dog pop into an almost yellow color. or another way to put it would just be that if the dogs are the focus, you need to save the biggest contrasts for something about the dog. right now, the background is so saturated that it draws the eye away from the dog.

anyway... you're doing some cool (pardon the pun) things with color temperature. i can tell you're observing and interpreting stuff well. it's just a matter of graying everything down and saving the powerful stuff for when you need to make something "pop."

not sure how much that helps, but let me know. keep on painting!
