Llourn's Sketchbook

[Llourn]

I've been drawing on and off for quite some time now, but only recently have I really taken a serious turn with my art.

I'll be posting mostly referenced work, as I'm really pushing to improve. There will probably be an original piece slotted in now and then to see how my reference work is effecting my ability to work from my head. Looking forward to critique/comments, and I'll try to update as often as possible.

The work that I've done so far was all referenced from photographs, and it was more like a transfer from photo to canvas then a study. I've been doing some more work with pencil/paper trying to work on my foundation.

Also, sorry for the large sizes. :| I'll shrink'em down more next time if you guys think they're too big.

very honest about your method! hehe, Ive been doing that this year too, the transfer from subject to page I mean. I didn't realize I was, and when I did I just thought what the fuck is the point of doing that!
Really you don't want to just get good at copying things when your trying to get better, I never render anymore when I do my studies and the amount I learn is WAY higher. I just think about what I want to learn, think about my subject, then go at it!

Been awhile...
I have rarely done any kind of background, so this was kind of fun. No ref for anything but the clothing/character. I think this image has me hooked on adding BGs to my paints.

really nice start on your sketchbook. and these bw skin tonal studies are very good. only thing I could point out is the hair. Maybe you could think about how to stylize it. What I mean is that painting so many lines makes it look more like a wig. But that's only my opinion.
Overall very good start. Keep working hard!

You have some nice figures here
You render pretty well too, but your traditional drawings aren't bad either.

Try working in pen a bit to improve on your linework!
Also, i think some studies after bridgman loomis or hogarth will help you a lot.

Once you have a sketch book here, you're good to go.
I'd just recommend you post everything that you have, and not only your finished or your best. It's a sketch book!!

@Ivan - Thanks a lot for the kind words. I'll definitely keep that in mind with future studies and see how it turns out. ;D

@BlackDelphin - Thanks for the welcome and kind words! Working in pen is terrifyingly permament. lol But I will definitely give it a solid try! I've been doing some muscle studies from anatomy books, is there something in those books I should be studying specifically? I'm really putting all my spare time into this painting, but once I finish this up I've got a nice little to-do list of studies I'll be doing and posting Soon you'll wish I didn't post so much! lol

So here's that lineart with some color.
I'm going for an overall soft green light with some shafts of warm light that are a bit broken up by the tree leaves. The background looks like shit right now, but it's really just there to break up the white space that was there before.

I'm having a lot of fun with this one, I haven't done a painting with this type of lighting before, most of my stuff is pretty flat so I'm trying to push my lights and darks to enhance form, and describe elements in my paintings a bit more.

Here's something new, that I took much too long to complete. I was hoping to put a nice BG in there etc, but my momentum is lost and I need to move on to something less stale.

Llourn: really nice work! I really like the women-very nice values and interesting poses! Actually, as far as the poses go, whether or not they are from ref, you've chosen excellent poses, IMO. Definitely not the standard cheesecake stuff, it's much different. I think you are on the right track though, so keep at it! I'm doing the same thing, working from ref, and from imagination, alternately. I am finding that both kinds of studies compliment each other to make my overall skills better. I would really like to get to the point where I can do a portrait from my head, of nobody in particular, and have it be believable. I'm not there yet, but I'm working at it, and looks like you are too! Overall, great work. Very Nicely done here!

great work so far. your tonal perception is great and I like how you're keeping your shadows flat.

Look for form and subtleties in overlapping lines and so on in your line studies. Use your line weight to the greatest effect you can, so push it in certain places and keep it thinner and lighter in others and it will be another tool to help read form.

Yes, I took photos of all these sketches. I recently reformatted my PC (which is where my scanner is) and installed Vista, which isn't compatible with my scanner... so suck it up this is what you get.

I've been diving into my studies lately, each day trying to do more. I can't even begin to tell you how much fun it's been doing these studies. Every time I turn the page in my sketchbook it feels like I'm taking a step. It's awwwwesome.

Those first figure paintings are excellent. You've got a great eye for proportion. Many of the faces after those are reading flat, because you're only using one kind of line. I've seen a couple really good comics artists produce a good portrait with just ink, and no hatching. Adam Hughes, Randy Green, Ed Benes. They're worth studying, but it's much easier to portray the face with a variety of values, and shading, especially around the eyes. There are many stylistic approaches to it, and they all work. Just always consider the light, and how it falls on a face.

Yeah I think I just get so caught up trying to make sure the face looks human (lol) so I forget all about line weight etc. Thanks for the awesome feedback!
