Those first figure paintings are excellent. You've got a great eye for proportion. Many of the faces after those are reading flat, because you're only using one kind of line. I've seen a couple really good comics artists produce a good portrait with just ink, and no hatching. Adam Hughes, Randy Green, Ed Benes. They're worth studying, but it's much easier to portray the face with a variety of values, and shading, especially around the eyes. There are many stylistic approaches to it, and they all work. Just always consider the light, and how it falls on a face.
