ROUND #199 :: Courtier

DESCRIPTION

Courtier

It's round 199 guys! We're finally here!

Every Queen has her court, and every court has it's courtiers - men and women of the upper class who make up the Queen's close social circle - and also harbour some of her worst enemies.

This week's round is very straight forward - design a courtier character. But let's think out of the box! Next week will be the new mascot round, and this courtier will be the herald to the mascot, so to speak.

Don't be afraid to push boundaries on this one. Maybe it is the court to the queen of the gods? The soldier/guard bee of the beehive? A band's screaming groupie? A medieval lady in waiting? A hyper-future galactic warrior queen's right-hand man? Think about the kind of queen you are designing the courtier for, and have fun!

Heh, it's done. Since the last update I've adressed a few issues the best I could: attempted to fix "uncomfortable look" of his sword hand (index finger still looks wonky to me), attempted to fix shading, adjusted the leg, desaturated the background a bit, and touched up some things that were just bothering me. As far as the process on this one, I am more than pleased with myself. I started in full colour (yay), and with just a general idea of who the character was gonna be worked hin out as I went. It was fun ^.^, I know he doesn't look much like a courtier what with the sword and armour, but oh well...

Race: Raam

Weight: 390 lbs.

Few members of the Divine Queen Belazekalah’s court are as intimidating, or dangerous, as the mighty Raam, Ruivkar Valainen. The Illuminator-General of the Orders of Truth, Ruivkar is wholly dedicated to the Queen, and any who dare blaspheme or question her under his vigilant gaze are in great peril indeed. It is rumoured that Ruivkar can smell a heresy brewing from miles away, and it is the greatest fear of many simple townsfolk that he will come and put them all to the torch. At court, however, rumours are mostly confined to how the Queen acquired such a subordinate; it is well-known that the fierce Raam people abhor Belazekalah and everything she represents, yet her highest officer is one. The Queen has never revealed anything. As for asking Ruivkar himself, that’s a good way to meet a sticky and untimely end at the tip of his massive blade.
However, as any Raam can tell you, the reality is simple, and a little sad. The story would have it that Ruivkar was once a mighty Raam warlord and sorcerer. When his pride lands were invaded by superior forces, he refused to admit defeat, and though he sent his pride away to the great city of Carnaea, he himself stayed and fought. Hundreds of the fell Queen’s soldiers did he slay before the creature Herself made an appearance. The ensuing sorcerous battle is said to have shook the very ground, but after three days and three nights, the accursed Queen brought low mighty Ruivkar. What vile magic She used to convert the warlord to her cause none can say, but ever since Ruivkar serves as the highest military advisor in Her employ, and as an example set to the Raam by the Queen: I can break your kind, and eventually, I will…

Wow - cool stuff this round. This particular courtier knows better than to look his queen in the eye.

Watercolor pencils. The WIPs are earlier value studies. I didn't have a chance to scan in the actual drawing/painting partway through. The second one shows my notes from a fascinating meeting at work.

Okay, posting this now or I'll just keep tinkering with it forever...

This is the official Moonkeeper of the Queen of Night. He's in charge of letting the moon loose at night and fetching it back in the morning, and regulating its phases. He probably has a sneaky secret alliance with the Court of Day, given the frequency with which the moon appears in daylight. Like the moon, he's tricky, changeable, and slightly mad.
