The level of rendering on these is tremendous. I've been asked to use your work on this film as inspiration for a project I'm working on. But I'm at a loss as to how to achieve the realism. Can you share anything about how you achieve this? Are there 3d models involved? Photo overlaying? I must be missing something!

    Great job

I emailed you, Michael, a long time ago but I guess you are very busy (clearly). It would be great if you could post a tutorial someday. I guess it doesn't make too much sense to reveal your tricks instead of just the magic. I do understand. Worth a shot though

Keep it up sir. You are an icon.

The catapillar and two rabbits are my favorites!

Truely frightening rendering my friend, just frightening.
Combine that with your superb attention to body language and expression and your hands down one of my all time favorite artists.
The expression and body language on the white rabbit is just out of sight man, phew!
you really *feel* like youve interrupted him.
    Sensational!

    Cant wait for more!
God bless you and yours Michael - be safe.

Thanks! There are no 3d models involved, just some paper textures in Painter, but most of it is drawn. I'm not a fan of too much photo bashing, I believe it tends to lack the signature of the artist.

Thanks so much! I guess the final look makes sense in terms of the role of the hatter in the story of the film. I totally loved your Exodyssey book, keep up the great work!

Film business definitely doesn't allow you to spend a lot of time on these images. For the most part I had to finish these polished ones in 2 or 3 days, but there's of course a lot of rough work I do on these projects before I get into that. A 3d artist at Imageworks told me that these finalized paintings were very helpful because they served as detailed maps for the elaborate process of creating the digital characters. Rougher concepts easily lead to misinterpretation and costly overtime on the 3d department side.

Hey Michael, great works, thanks for sharing!

Do you have any stages of your works? I'm actualy interesting how you work with matherials and textures, also how you did this awesome wool? It would be great to see some WIP from you, anyway.

Really nice pictures, I saw the movie today but what strikes me when I look threw your stuff is that Id find a book version illustrated by you much more interesting. Must of been a huge experience working on such a film nonetheless!

Just saw the movie. That top image of the Mad Hatter looks way better than the one they used!
Overall, it looks like your designs were the highlight of a movie I was a little disappointed in!

Great work - the eyes look frightened/trapped inside the bizarreness of the characters. Nice manifestation of the sadism of the Carroll books.
