    Studies of Rome

Here are some images from a series of black and white on toned paper studies. I have been going back and forth between wax pencil on one study then charcoal hightened with white chalk on another. When there wasn't fixed lighting I had to schedule a couple of sessions to return to the subject when the shadow patterns were about the same. Please let me know what you think.

Beautiful work m8, very nice. The only thing that doesn't do it for me is the wooden panel which the door handle is on. It just looks a bit rushed and messy/dirty compared to the others, but in saying that you were probably just focusing on the nice handle which I understand. Apart from that minor niggle, your work is excellently drawn out, values and light look great, cant complain .

    Keep us posted :clapping2

Hi Ted! how are you doing I hope that Rome is treating you well and that you have mastered the fine art of Coffe making

Your human sculptures are really nice. especially the first one. you rendered the clothing in a very realistic way.

    keep it up.

your rendering skills are solid. your vignette compositions are not as strong. check out the works of richard schmid to see how he composes shapes and values into parts that support the greater whole. vignette composition is really no different than pictorial composition (dore, degas, rembrandt, sargent)...instead of it being trees or chairs or subject matter it is just shapes and marks that make up an abstract composition which supports your imagery and helps the page to seem complete.

    best,

The rendering is, needless to say, very skillful. The white chalk highlights seem a little bit too evenly distributed, however, and the forms are flattening out as a result. This is especially a problem in the two busts.

Thank you for your helpful comments. I have edited the post to add three more studies. The "fountain head" (second to the last) wasn't the best cast, but it's on the back patio and has sentimental beauty.

Now that's good stuff! Makes me want to go out right now and do some of that.
The great thing about studies is that there's no real concern for finished product so you relax and just allow yourself to learn. As a result they frequently yield the best finished products.

defcombeta, I lived on the Borgo Pio (thirty second walk from Saint Peter's Square). So, I went inside the basilica almost every day during my stay. Thanks for the compliment.

Hillartsympho, Your right next to Piazza del Popolo. I think there was an occasional Temple student in Santa Maria's while I was there. That's a great area to live in. Here's a link to my sketchbook while in was travelling (the last page has another bust from that church.) http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=20007

Thank you everybody for your compliments.
