    Ye' Old Sketchbook Critiques Welcome!

I decided to start a new sketch, since I haven't used my old one in decades.

I really need to practice my scanner skills. >_<
Anyhow, I have been attending FEWs everyday. Putting me at 7-8 times a week of 3 hour figure drawing sessions. CRITIQUE WOULD BE GREAT

    Getting a lot better dude!

It's good that you're doing so much art but don't get burned out!

Taking breaks is actually good, it gives your brain and eye a chance to catch up.

    I'll break when i'm dead?
Nah, spring break is coming up in a week, so that will be nice.

Oh, for all those striving to be professional artists here is a quote from Sterling Hundley I keep on my desktop, "Remember, there are things which you are in complete control of: How hard you work, how quickly you grow (this is closely related to how hard you work), recognizing opportunities, and taking advantage of them, what you know, and what you learn, being a great student with a curious mind (this should last your entire life), your willingness to share, to be taught, surrounding yourself with more talented people, more driven people, etc., committing to you goals and embracing them as part of your lifestyle, etc."

The one with the octopus looking creature has a story above it I wrote a year and a half ago. I want to start illustrating a few of my stories so here is the rough. The one with the bird was a project I did earlier this year. The marker one is from observation.

Was at the park sketching today before going to a local figure drawing session here. The model ended up not showing up, but I met a Ringling Illustration major from 1972ish. Was kind of cool. Anyhow, here are my bird sketches.

Summer has been moving right along. We have been painting and drawing regularly. I now have a job at admissions as a Ringling Student Ambassador

Sorry, I haven't been updating my blog. It's a bit more difficult to get things scanned in regularly since everything has odd hours. Currently, I am working on my second oil painting ever. Here is the WIP, my apologies for the picture quality, it was taken with my phone.

    Hey there!

Firstly, thanks for bothering to check out my sketchbook, i don't really look at it until i go to post...I was pleasantly surprised to find visitors!

It's funny because about a week ago I was checking out your blog, I'm envious of you going to ringling- i wish i had done my undergrad there and was super bummed they didn't have a graduate program until the TAD happened!

So it's really inspiring to see your progress throughout your sketchbook, your proportions and handling of line continue to improve. The newest portrait is particularly nice! The handling of light and color works well- be careful that the eyes/eyebrows don't start to look pasted on-still incorporate colors from the flesh (this is something i have to work on as well!)

Not really sure what else to crit on as it seems you are already in a good practice! Just continue to be mindful of proportions in that preliminary stage!
I also think the handling of the illustration with the boy and the fox is nice.
Keep it coming and I hope to encounter you at the TAD!

I should post some sketch book stuff soon, just to put some things into context I figured out how much figure drawing I do about every week. Somewhere between 20 to 24 hours. Work Hard, Grow Fast, Have Fun

I really this last one, with the turtle and the boy. Your eye goes right to his sash, then his sword, and the ocean... you don't even realize he's standing on a turtle until you've looked at it awhile, which I think is pretty cool. Compared to some of the previous paintings, this one has a far greater range of saturation and brightness, and I hope you explore this more, so your paintings don't become too muddled.

Just finished the Illustration Academy and am spending my last day in Kansas City with TAD. I should be home in under a week after a trip to the Brandywine. Hope to post some work when I get back.

Both experiences, RVA Academy and KC TAD workshop, have been great. I still plan to continue at Ringling, but am definitely looking toward the possibility of TAD following that. Hope everyone is having a great summer, be back with new work soon!
