Kuakness' Sketchbook - Hitting the reset button

    Hey everyone!

I'm Lorena Salas, a rookie graphic designer from Mexico. I've always loved to draw ever since I was a kid, but always kept it at a "just-a-hobby" level, that's why I haven't been able to progress as an artist. Especially these last two years, when I had to take a mandatory hiatus from art as well as many other things. Thankfully, I've regained enough confidence to start all over again and this time give it my best! I'm on a journey to find what I'd like to specialize in and since art has always been a passion, I'm giving it a shot.

I took one year of figure drawing in college as well as the mandatory art courses in HS. The rest I've tried to figure on my own... I'll try to work on at least ten sketches per week, and maybe a painting on the weekends.

Truth be told, I'm kind of shy about showing my work with so many amazing artists around but I want to get better so if you got any tips, advice, critiques or whatever, I'll REALLY appreciate it :)

Great sketches! I really like the more cartoony poses, but the eyes and the cloth studies are pretty solid.

There's something a bit off about the angel guy though, I think there's a foreshortening issue with his right thigh which you might be able to solve with a greater range of tones? Could be wrong though, I'm pretty amateur myself!

    This is spartaaaa

    Man-with-no-name and Izer,
thanks a lot for the encouragement !!!

    BigglesB,
Thanks for taking the time to take a look at my sketches! And yes, you're right, I do have a lot of trouble with foreshortenings... Guess I'll have to look more into that, and also in tones... thank you so much for the comment ^-^

Anyway, here's today's thing.. I'm in love with Canova's sculptures, what can I say? I really love drawing them. I'm having a hard time drawing hands, feet and faces... geez... I have a question though, I'm using grids to get good proportions but... is it acceptable? I read something about "drawing crutches" in one of Andrew Loomis' books and I was wondering if grids enter in that category... anyway! peace out

Hello Lorena, that's quite an impressive sketchy artwork, as people said above those eyes studies are indeed anatomically right and solid, now for your illustrations, well to get solve the problem with foreshortening you need a lot of practice, but generally speaking your measurements and the shading of your figures are well studied and used. Keep it up!
I was wondering, what paper size did you use for your figure drawings?

    Michαλis Vareλiαs,
Thank you very much for your comment! Yeah, I think I need to study a lot of foreshortening, I'll look into that . The statue drawings were drawn in a 10 x 14in piece of paper. The other rougher sketches were drawn in a letter-sized sketchbook.

Is it better to draw in a larger format?

    Foot fetish D:

It takes a while for me to scan things and upload them so I guess I'll be updating every 3 days or something like that.... I'm still drawing everyday though! This weekend got a bit complicated because I was out of town but without further ado...

    High perspective attempt...

Failed D: so I figured out there's five things I need to practice:
    1- perspective
    2- foreshortening
    3- hands, feet... FACES
4- heads and hats... I just can't get them right
    5- ....objects and landscapes.

Anyway tried to sketch out some characters from Rockband... will fix them up digitally...

Talking Recovering from an art slump

It's been way too long x__x. Truth be told, I stared working as a Visual Development artist in my town and the awful art director kept discouraging me. I got so depressed.... Fortunately, he moved to another company! Yay! more creative freedom!!

YES I STILL HAVE A LONG WAY TO GO but at least I have one less venomous person to worry about.

And Im trying out tutorials and copying out art books hardcore x_X I NEED TO IMPROVE FAST T_T

No, seriously, I'm not that ugly D:

But I'm really self conscious and even more so when I'm drawing myself
