When I first decided to work with artists in China, it was for one reason alone. Artists in China still hold traditional painting values in high regard.

Not long ago, when I was in school, I found it hard to learn traditional drawing and painting from my teachers. I would arrive at a new school and find perhaps a couple that could teach and do what they were talking about. The USA (and Europe)had from the 1920's - 1990's shunned traditional art learning as unnecessary. The methods of the traditional masters were ignored. In China, this is just not the case. The same teachings that were popular in France in the 19th century, or Russia in the 1950's Socialist Realist period, are still thriving in China.

The rich tradition of Chinese painting and refined eastern/western composition and image making theory is a powerful mix. In my search for artists with such knowledge, I found ZhangLu and/or he found us.

Since then, ZhangLu has been working as a concept artist at MB Shanghai. He is working directly with me for these videos which will go a long way to helping support this community. We are lucky to have ZhangLu with us. His work is of very high skill and his spirit stands out from the crowd. His art is unique and I am happy to have had the chance to work on these videos with him. He is able to capture soul in his work, and saves the humanity of his subjects in the pixels he paints.

Those portraits are probably the most inspiring pieces of work I've seen this year. Sounds silly, but they look so natural.
To be all 'arty farty' and conceptual, it seems the ink has simply leaked out of the paper to form the shape. LOVE IT!
