    Elidee's Back to the Basics

Hey everyone, I'm a long time lurker who finally got up the motivation and courage to post my work. When I started drawing casually years ago, I skipped over the basic anatomy, form, and figure that would have helped me so much. I'm basically a self-taught casual artist, but I'd really like to push my art and keep improving. There are a lot of gaps in my foundation as it is now.

To that end, I've decided to crack open some art books and relearn from scratch! I'm using Loomis primarily and trying 60/30 second gesture drawing right now. I'm a senior in engineering, graduating in May and going for a PhD. I'll be working to fit everything in around my college work!

First off - a selection of my old work, then some of my new 60 second figure drawings using posemaniacs. More of my old stuff is on DeviantArt, but most of it isn't good enough to post here.

First: A still life from a few years back, with my cd player, an old anime dvd, and a pear.

Second: Carth Onasi of the game Knights of the Old Republic by Bioware. This is an illustration I did for my roommate's birthday, done in November. This was the first time I really decided I wanted to push the background and the coloring. I realized I got such a sense of satisfaction after completing the background from references of the Eagle Nebula, and it has made me want to keep pushing my art.

Third: An illustration of one of my original characters, done just before I decided to start working on anatomy and figure drawing.

Fourth: The beginning of my 60 sec. gesture drawings

Fifth: More sketches, the woman is from reference at Thomas Doering, the man from DevArt stock, and the thumb is mine.

    Rest: 60 second figure drawings

mpdpsy: Thanks so much! The 60 second studies have been a great way to practice and warm up. I'm really glad I've started doing them.

More 60 second practices... and an eye. I started trying to be less sketchy and more confident about my lines when doing these.

Good work so far, human figure studies look great. Keep up the good work.

My first try at Loomis' proportions using heads... and it looks a little strange. I'm not quite confident with it yet, and I think I'll give it another go.

I really did enjoy playing around with the 'mannequin' poses Loomis recommends. It's beginning to feel more natural to draw him.

And rounding out, more figure study warmups from posemaniacs, 60 seconds.
