ok ya i see what your doing, thanks grandma!

so here is a real update, and with 3 versions just because i can!

lol i just liked the different stuff that i got, the white background one is the one im working on and the other 2 are just with layers turned on and off. - i hate the face that i made, i really got to fix it. So any tips would be nice ^_^

would also like to say that i have realized something that i did wrong: I was using 71 resolution rather then the 300 recommended

oops on my part, so i made this ball thingy to test out what 300 resolution does...its awesome for zooming in and doing work there. I didn't really blend the ball to well, it was just a test thingy after all.

Im gonna go and see it then ^_^

ok i'll work on it a bit more then. But first i got to let my brother play his game on the computer xD he's been bugging me for half an hour.

I did some leg studies, ummm i like the one on the left xD the right one could use some work. but i had to do them fast due to my brother. I used a new brush for the one on the left and the right, although you can't really tell with the right one due to it looking like a normal brush. Just the way it works is different. Still wondering if its any good. I like the one that makes it look like a pencil though! was fun.

Looking good man, i think the shadows on the ticket could be a bit stronger though considering the strong light... unecessary advice seeing as your done but maybe you could keep it in mind for some other time? Keep it up!

hey mist, to answer your question, the portrait was done from a Ref, John Singer Sargent painting But when doing portrait from imagination, its good to try to block the main proportion as general guides for the more detailled features while keeping in mind the general light direction. I also read recently in a book ( Alla Prima by Robert Shmidt, you should read it ) that the less value you use to paint, the best it is... so you can start with 2 values, 1 for light, 1 for shadow, but this would give a really high contrast look.. so next you can try 5 value, 2 values for highlight, 2 for shadows, and 1 for midtones. just makes sure that you stay within those general valeus when painting with hard edges. As for soft edges, its the same, except that where the values blend it create a lot of mini values that fade from one to the other between the 2 main values.. Not sure if this is clear hahaha my english is not good when it comes to art explanation Keep at it, do more studies !

Thanks everyone, i'll keep in mind the stronger shadows. I always try to make them strong but i seem to fail at that. Gotta practice i suppose. And i'll do more studies now! im sick of trying to paint from my head xD Gonna just do colour exercises and such to help me get better.

Sorry Grandma your wording made it sound that i made a mistake on the hips, but i suppose i didn't out that much detail on the hips in the first place.

    - and im gonna look into that book you said WhiteC thanks.

When you're drawing figures (from the head or ref), try and get the major forms to be more accurate before you move on to smaller muscle groups and surface forms. Sounds really basic, so I hope I'm not coming across the wrong way, but if you look at Ron Lemen's or KChen's stuff you'll see what I mean.

Really try to nail the initial proportions and then divide the basic forms using landmarks and structural rhythms, its really important to gradually work from big to small.

The same goes for shading, try and simplify and group tones as much as you can at the early stages.

Your studies have been really nice lately, keep at it!

k... So i may suck at painting and faces BUT! i have now kinda got better at choosing colours for shading/general colouring. I was reading this book i picked up and it reminded me that i could use the colourwheel to remind my self what colours to use and such. So i was all like sure why not and gave it a try. Ummm the face wasn't supposed to be realistic, i was more or less trying to make this funky face that i drew in my sketchbook but then i was like nah and made it slightly more realistic. Btw can someone give me tips on what colour to paint eyes? this was irritating and it looks like its glowing. Which is cool but not what i wanted xD

    - i find it a bit to dark. Next time i shalt try brighter colours! or maybe a brighter background?

PS: this was a bit of a quick paint, like half an hour. So the its not really blended. Was more looking at the colours/shading then anything...

btw can anyone tell that ive been doing face studies? i hope so xD - the nose is a tad big though and messed up the top lip... xD

btw btw it looks a bit smudgy any tips for that? darker colours? brighter ones maybe? or just more shadowing of the same colour here and there?

57, I have seen a vast improvement in your faces, they take a long time to get right but... once you learn how to line up the features and get the proportions right you will start to see faster and it will become easier, getting better very quickly. I usually have to change the eye line several times and the pupils, but if you go away from a piece and come at it refreshed it can help. Also asking for crits and receiving them helps a ton. You have a great crew of very helpful people now helping you, it will pay off soon... huge strides, just take a look at page #1 and now look back here. Great job in a very short amount of time. NICE!!!!!!

thanks kelly! i'll be sure to follow your advice and thanks for the encouragement!

    - well sorry for the lack of updates but i have been drawing, just in my sketchbook and not on the computer, and since i dont have a scanner i can't really show my work in high quality.

anyways, the face i made is ok, i think i got better so hurray me! and i kinda like the little eye i drew. That Andrew Loomis book helped quite a bit.

I flipped through some of your work.

its good progress better than i was at your age but then again people move different in phases of art.

As for the illustrations its great but take life drawing classes a ton of them nothing beats life drawing.

Use charcoal and such and get the flow of the value and form of the constructs.

    so far so good

If you want to study some of the modern masters

    George Bridgeman
    Andrew Loomis
    Burne Hogarth

Theres more but thats who i look into for the constructs and shapes and value and form etc... of the human body.

    Peace,
    Alex
