Love the personality in the muscle studies. Very comic book, stylized, but it still pops out at me.
Artists have such a magnificent gift...breathing life into something with just simple lines.

You definitely have something wicked going, as previous poster mentions your comic stuff has a lot of attitude; great stuff.
Only advice I could give is to try and stay away from soft airbrushes![]()

Level 8 Gladiator: Thracian
Hey darkenuf, you are showing lots of progress here! I like the last painting from reference, watch the left eye, it looks a little high. One trick i use is to flip my canvas horizontally (can do it in photoshop and painter, don't know what your using, set it as a keyboard shortcut if you can, saves time). Your brain can play tricks on you, it's a good way to quickly find errors in your proportions. It's good that you are studying from reference and drawing from your head...I think it's important to do both. (i do a little of both each day). Check out the loomis books for lessons in drawing, http://acid.noobgrinder.com/Loomis/ I've filled several sketchbooks copying just from these books. Check all around this site for other useful tutorials. By the way, there are ALWAYS errors in our work, and i am certainly not exempt, so please feel free to critique. I'm a fan of the notion that there is no such thing as failure, only feedback. When you view the world as being full of information, suddenly you're not hindered by any negative or counter-productive emotions. Believe me, I've seen people critiquing portfolios of some of the best artists in the world (in my opinion) and the structure of those critiques were fundamentally no different than the critiques of beginner's portfolios (like mine). Embrace the mindset of constructive self-correction because I honestly think that it never leaves you as an artist. If fact, this mindset IS what art is all about. Anyways, i get long-winded sometimes hope it helps... Have fun!
Nice sketchbook so far. Your anatomy drawings are looking good. Also your last drawing from the reference looks good, the only part I see that looks a little off is the eyes. Keep up the good work.
ok im not dead and heres a quick spiderman to prove it 10 minute sketch
thanks for the books dark eyes but i dont agree with andrew loomis formal and informal designs it kind of constricts my freedom to draw random clutery lines i prefer to uses circles

hi Darkenuf!
keep on pushing it man! Thanks for dropping by my humble SB.
Post#14 looks good, one small thing though, you made her cheek slightly gaunt/deeper than in the ref photo.
till next time!

MY ANGRY SKETCHBOOKhttp://www.conceptart.org/forums/sho...129015&page=13
hey man, thanks for posting on my sketchbook here to answer your question about the custom brushes. You can google them, but it's much cooler to make your own. It's easy.
assuming you have photoshop CS3
just open a new window, choose a regular black brush - paint on the canvas (transparencies are ok) and paint a shape, or a splash or gob of a shape. anything you want, you can even use a picture. then hit M for your marquee tool, select what you just made. go to edit / define brush preset. that's it! now you have it in your brushes panel. hit F5 and it should be at the end of the list. here is where you can tweak it.
what I usually do is select the new brush i made, click the "shape dynamics" box and if you have a tablet pen, check "angle jitter" depending on what you want the brush for, you can change the Jitter amount. but I always have the angle jitter set to "Pen tilt" then back on the left side, check the "other dynamics" box, and put opacity and flow to "pen pressure" in their respective pull down boxes. for a basic brush, un-check all the other boxes on the left. except for the "smoothing" attribute at the bottom.
now you are ready to add this brush to your archive.
on your brushes palette click the options menu (funky lookin' icon top right of the palette window it has a little down arrow w/ some lines next to it.)
choose new brush preset. now all those attributes you added to your new brush are saved under a new brush in your list. delete the old one (you will see 2 that look exactly alike in the thumbnails section) and you can save that new brush with the Preset manager. up at the top of your screen you can find the preset manager where it says what brush you are using in your main toolbar. click the down arrow, then the right arrow on that window, in that list you will see "preset manager" click that, highlight click the brush you just created, (again it will probably be at the bottom) click "save set" and name it something unique. like "my custom brushes" now you can just keep adding on to that list, make sure when you add to that list you don't overwrite the whole list with just 1 new brush. you have to select all the brushes you want to go in there, through the preset manager. I hope this helps!
play around with the brush attributes till you get what you are looking for. its a lot of fun!
feel free to google chat w/ me on this topic if you need a hand xzacto @ gmail.com
Very cool muscle studies, your construction lines show competent forms. You got a good style going on man.
