MUJI Sketchbook 08

sketches found in my MUJI sketchbook, from April 08 until May08. Starting a Sketchbook threat in the hope that will get feedbacks, helps, comments etc. from everyone, thanks in advance.

they are mindless doodles mainly or what's been burning in my mind & need to put it down on paper.

Cool stuff! Like the Karmen Raider sketches. As far as crits I would say work on drawing some more hands and faces from real life.

Excellent SB. The horses in particular are great. Try to tone down the scribbling, even though it works in a fair few of your sketches. But when they're clear, like the hands in the last post, they're just perfect.

thanks, my thoughts the same. drawing from life is always useful, a compromise would be from photo reference?

most of the scribbling were there bcos of lack of light sketches lines or lack of skills (either in subject matter or posing or anatomy or something else )? some, started off too dark and with compounding amendments makes it look scribbley? I'm guessing the "clearer" ones were there bcos of either going over with another pen (like the hands, 2 or 3 days later) or tracing of the silhouette from the previous page in a later date (like the horse on the last post, Untitled-3.jpg or the face from the first post, Untitled-9.jpg). In future, will try to work with more lighter construction lines first to work on basics like anatomy, pose and see if it works and add darker lines to better define the subject matter later, and hopefully that will sort-out the scribbley effect

here's more after a night's sleep and rest from scanning frenzy, sketches done from mid July 08 till now. Again crits & comments are very much welcomed

thanks to in-flight magazine, the 6 hours flight from beijing to kuala lumpur becomes bearable as plenty of photo ref materials. a good study later reveals that i have tendency to over elongate nose sections, not just this photo ref, but others as well, will take note in future.

Kamen rider sketches, done back in march 08

I love all of your sketches! I like how you stick with one pose for a few sketches, but keep it fresh by drawing different people.
Your drawings of faces and hands are shaping up nicely! I want to see more of them!

most were done during idle time, like waiting in the airport lounge for transit, late night in hotel rooms, on train, buses etc, basically i carry a pen/ pencil case, and i just pick up whichever i get my fingers on. you are right, they are mostly ball points, but some are gel ink, some finer ones, but i like to go thru it with artline etc, soft pencils etc. as long as it doesn't smudge or leave behind blobs of ink, then the pen get stored in my case. i do hav a BIC pen inside the case, but its a grey artline sort. they are mainly sketches to keep me from getting too rusty before i embark on a more formalise regime to improve me skills.

that's how i explore and study characters, or rather other "mundane" things like anatomy, try to refine it further or do side sketches with bone structures etc, to "double check" on the sketches. glad u like it, always been a big fan of batman, since kindergarten

thanks and a good start at your age! but one really needs a more regimented training to get the basic out of the way and i see you are already hard at work on your anatomy, will do the same here (soon )!

yeah, i watch them when i was a teen too, back when i was 16, black was me fav tv hero, there's always a mask rider for every age group hahahaha

the batman sketches were doe before dark knight, after i've seen the awesome movie, maybe i'll hide my future sketches, then again "why so serious?" LOL

started my Bridgman anatomy studies, very useful, looking at the constructive anatomy and trying it out gives me an entirely different appreciation of the why his anatomies are so expressive, i felt they are exaggerated for ease of understanding and made obvious for less trained eyes. great stuff, highly recommended. next will be to do no ref sketches based on the new info, and come back again to check on the Bridgman sketches. cheers

thanks, still find myself with very limited subject, would like to expand more, but before that need to build a stronger basics. very observant on the mythological and historical characters, will try more modern ones in future

about the bridgman stuff, make sure you READ it too, not just copy the drawings. the drawings are meant to give a visual context to the written work, but the most information comes from reading it. understanding the why of the what, the function that dictates the form, is the most important thing that bridgman stresses in his books, so if i could offer any advice, it's to READ bridgman. internalize that learning, and then use it to create your own examples. g'luck man.

Thanks a zillion on that insight, i dive in straight to the drooling sketches reference and skim through the text, later when i try to "construct" my own anatomy, i was faced with a mental block! and then i read your comments, i think that's my problem, will now head back to the text and hopefully it will help out! thanks for taking time from your extremely prolific sketches routine to give very insightful comments!

the sketches are disturbing weak and expose my weaknesses, but will post it as reminder, need to digest the ideas and concepts behind and fully understood it, otherwise it'll be emulation, have to make it part of the thinking process, have to comprehend it... back to the book.

my first masked rider (kamen rider) was a movie where kamen rider 1, 2 and V3 appears together, this was when i was 9 (year 1982) as a special programme that our school screen during children's day, the rest of the children was just not interested on the movie and more akin to the gifts and sweets that they are getting, i was just blown away by what i saw on screen. unfortunately it was in japanese, which means i dont understand a word it says, but since then i've anticipated the coming of children's day for different reasons. i've seen Akumaizer too and i love the brotherhood thing a lot. then it stop after i've gone to junior high, because local TV doesnt show toei's kamen rider. only when i turn 16 that we get to see Masked Rider Black, its a voice over translated version, not the "power rangerlised" version. coupled with the dark tone of the comic made me felt in love all over again with the series. for me, the only new kamen rider series that i could accept is up to kuga, the modern ones are just not "kamen rider" enough for my liking.

more serious study after reading the text, pick up bone structures that was missed out, straight side and action aide etc, but still a long way to go.

also anyone knows what happened to the comment or labeling of uploaded pics under the manage attachment pop-up? its for easy reference from crits and comments, i remember the extra column was there a year ago....

if you click the "go advanced" button and use the attachment manager to attach files, there should be a paperclip icon next to the smileys (above). once you click on that, it allows you to post the files you attached within the body of the response, like you put smileys in. i guess we'll see if i am being clear enough; please let me know if i'm not. the bridgman stuff's starting to look better already, so keep working hard at it. take care dude; i'll be back.

more studies, there seems no end to it, but the more i study, the more difficult it gets to draw from mind something that works, this i suspect is due to lacking more insight of other "parts" to complement the parts that i've gain more knowledge on, i hope anyway, that after gaining more knowledge of other parts, i can come back again and improve, it like a never ending iteration!
