Between executing my modem and the crap from last week, I've pretty much screwed up our schedule, so here's what i think we'll do...
I'm posting something right now (Wednesday night) that we'll just stretch through next week until we're back on schedule. This will give Seedling a chance to rest after her trip and allow for the fact that we still have at least one more drunken holiday to go, so you get some extra time here...
It's a Walk in the... (Due January 6, 2008-EXTENDED DEADLINE)
We've all pretty much drawn somebody in any number of poses over the years/months/days (depending on how old you are...), and some of them are a real pain in the butt, and some are relatively easy, even for the total beginners among us. BUT...butbutbut...I DO love that word...butbutbutbut... ! ...ahem...sorry...
Cough... Where I was headed is... Did you ever notice how hard it is to draw someone walking? I mean just strollin' along mindin' their own business? I still have a nervous breakdown when somebody says, "Hey! I know...let's have him walking right at us!" I really want to hit that person with a big stick...
Hey! I THINK it's hard to draw people walking, and I ain't ashamed to admit it. Laugh if you want, but we're gonna see who gets the last laugh in a couple of days... Going from "here" to "there" is really complicated. There are all kinds of things to worry about, like where your feet are, where your arms are, trying not to make contact with the concrete with your nose... It's a bunch of stuff that has to all work together just right every time you move your feet. THAT makes it hard... harder than drawing that model sittin' on a stool or park bench. Even just standing around is easy to draw. NOTHING'S HAPPENING! As soon as our subject gets up and travels five feet to pick up their dropped car keys, all hell breaks loose!
So...this is your assignment...
I want you to draw simple figures (more than simple stick figures, but not detailed enough to have to stress out over--something like those little figures architects put in their proposals to show where people belong, etc. Understand?), both genders, and just walking from one place to another. Towards us, away from us, going left and right, at different angles, whatever. the more the merrier. Like I said above, don't worry about things like faces and how many fingers they have...just have them detailed enough for all of us to know they're walking somewhere.
The important things to worry about are their strides (how long-how short), the way any clothing they're wearing moves, how their little egg-shaped heads and arms/shoulders/hips move to balance themselves...stuff like that. I'd like you to concentrate more on WALKING/STROLLING because that's where the difficulty is, but you can have some running, skipping, whatever if you want.
Keep the drawings pretty small. We're more concerned with overall attitude and position of the body than we are with fussy details for this one--just enough to make it clear what you're showing.
And since I missed it...Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone. Now go draw...
