¬_¬ Sean's Sketchbook <Clever phrase>

Hey everyone. Dispite whatever my registration date may read, I am a new member to the site. I made an account a long time ago, but then never got to actually do anything with it.

Anyway, I used to be on top of my game way back in the day, and dispite the 6 dozen times I have tried to kick-start it back, I just haven't been able to. Parent's spending months in ICU or my paycheck just never adding up. Yunno, life and all it's glorious glory. Anyway, I have a new job now and amazingly being number one in sales in my department, I still find ample time to doodle. SO I have started drawing again and would like some feedback. I have seen two old acquantinces come here and grow to heights I would have never dreamed, so I hope I can learn a fraction of what they have. (Holler to my peeps Justin Oaksford and GraySapphire/Green Topaz!)

Anyway, on to the REASON why people make sketchbook threads.

yeah, I have picked up some bad habits, so I hope I can continue to find the time to draw and hopefully find where I do things wrong and correct them. As it is, my full-time job allows for some kill-time and this week I will be picking up a second job. So I will try my best to keep at it.

Hey man. It cool to hear youre getting back into art. You have a nice start to your sketchbook. Favila made a true statement. It is definatley is the easiest way to improve. Another fantasic way is to start studing books that teach you how to draw. I never did this at first and I totally regret it because I had to take huge steps backward to reinforce my foundation skills. One awesome collection of books that will launch you straight into improving would be the Loomis collection. You can download them for free here........ http://24.247.130.240:8882/

There is also a collection of books created by a fella called Bridgeman. Iam still looking for a free verison of those because Iam a bit of cheap skate. I know you can buy them online.

Thanks. I am trying to not go a day without bustin up some paper with some drawing. I really don't like not being able to do what I did 5+ years ago.

Hey, thanks for dropping by on my sketchbook.

You've got a great grasp on hatching. What did you use for those first drawings? It kinda looks like ball-point pen.

Yeah, everything so far is ball-point. I did them at work, and without drawing too much attention to myself (pun not intended) I just use what they have there. Printer paper and ball-point pen.

Ball point pen is a great medium! I use it all the time in my sketch books (dun have any of it on here though).

Your cross hatching is great and I love the abstract shape-things you've done, especially the one with color. Just keep on practicing! Practice practice practice x3

ok, i found a relatively older sketch in one of many journals and decided it was delicious fodder for prisma practice.

i love me prisma colored pencils!

the second is actually the first drawing i did of the guy who's shown up a couple times so far. i just lost this paper until i found it at work in one of my binders. cant decide if i like his hair forward or back.

Thanks for commenting in my book man. I did the same thing as you, hung up the pencil for 3years or so and man I was rusty as hell when I tried again. Just keep swinging, you'll pick it up again. Working the second job is killer, I was doing that for a while and I know drawing ends up pretty low on the list doesn't it.

If you're buddies with justin oaksford, I'm sure you'll have seen the attention to anatomy. Gotta do it man, but it doesn't have to be boring. A lot of dudes here use porn refs for their studies and it works great for them.

On second thought that could get distracting....

^^^ Every time I look at porn now, I'm distracted the other way--I see a naked chick and I get the urge to bust out a sketchbook and start practicing my anatomy, lol.

It's great to see you're picking art back up after not doing it for so long. I really like your little cartoon guy that keeps popping up... reminds me of a character from FF Tactics, or maybe something out of a web comic.

Definitely show us more... and maybe try to experiment with different materials. You never know when you'll find a medium that suits you perfectly

Your strategy of commenting in other people's sketchbooks and getting commented on in return seems to be working.

Anyway, I really like your pencil technique, with the layered hatch-marks. The greatest problem in your art right now, I think, is flatness. Many of these sketches don't really project out into space. You partly solved this problem with your drawing of that green face. The nose and chin areas project into space well. However, the eye and cheek areas are very flat. This flatness, combined with the non-flatness of the chin area, creates the sense of a strange twist the face. My suggestion is to study the forms and planes of the face. Pick up a Bridgman book or download a Loomis book. They'll help.

Flatness is actually number one on my list of things I have become aware of over the years that tend to drag me down.

Need to find more time to work on stuff....

Second job killed me. Now I am starting a new job this next week. I think it's about time to start up again, and stick with it. I got married this winter, and one of the things my wife constantly reminds me of is that I used to draw all the time and she misses it.

I'll see you guys around more often as time permits.

And to answer your question, I didn't see what kinda necro-posting rules there were, and I am one of those neat-freaks and didn't want to start posting a new book whenever I picked up the ol' pencils and pens again.
