Hello,

My name is Brian Luk welcome to my sketchbook. Here you will find my good and bad drawing days, as well as polished works. So let those critiques and feedback rip.

Excellent! What did you use for these? graphite, pen and marker?

Renier van der West: Thanks, I use pencil, ink, watercolor, and color pencil. Actually it's hard to tell because I grayscaled and tinted the image to save image size. Here's one of the pages without the change, sorry about that.

Those anatomy studies on tinted paper are really nice - more of those please!
Also, it seems you have a problem drawing lips? CAn't really tell, a lot of your drawings here are quite small, but you might wanna look into that.

Great work though, keep it up!

bunny: I see what you mean by the lips. On bunch of the smaller heads I use three simple dashes. I'm browsing some bigger of protraits and it doesn't have a very define plains.(I'll post those soon) I think you are right, I'm due for an upgrade. Thanks!

Here is another study.

I use to know someone who was close to me, that I considered a mentor during the time. She went to a nice art school and would tell me all the fantastic things she learned or famous people who taught there. We use to draw together for fun when we were younger, but things were different after she went to that school. Soon I wasn't considered fit enough to draw with her because I never meet the famous people she mentioned or used expensive equipment as she did. Teasing became her new pastime with me. I became greatly discouraged and almost believed her words that I was wasting my time.

But day one it got really old. I realized that just because a person wants you to be unhappy, doesn't mean you have to be. So everytime she teased me, I would nod my head and walk away to silently draw pages of studies. The more I drew the more she mouthed off. The more she mouthed off the more I needed to draw. Eventually she had nothing more to say. I drew for myself and for other dedicated people's projects who played nice.

Here is a robot in progress, trying something new. Painting on top of a photo for textures. Bridgeman studies to help me out with drawing lips, thanks for the tip, Bunny!

Interesting study. Some good work here. Regardless of taste, I think your little deviant anime illustrations could be corrupting what you're learning from the more basic fine arts exercises.

I suggest bridgman's Constructive anatomy if you don't already have it. and yeah i agree with Listing watch the anime it can hold you back if your not careful.

Listing: I been wondering that too...everytime I would want to draw a person I would perfer to draw it in anime style because it was more fun...made me happy I guess. I keep on drawing more faces and they seem to have less impact so I studied the skull and shapes and had mixed improvement.

Unbreakable: Thanks I actually got the big versions but I agree I should finish studyng the whole book. I do the studies to grow but the then I move onto the fun drawings...not sure if that's the best way to work.

JERI: For the Sarah studies it's from the book "Anatomy for the Artist" Most of the random faces I draw are from clothing Ads and a plastic skull I drew a million times. Jeri you have an awesome sketch book, comics and anime. The humor is just priceless in some of your comics.

Lol, I'm too flattered. Most of the humor were based on actual events I experienced and I simply put it on paper.

I've got no general crits for you at the moment. I mean I don't seen anything wrong, and everything you're doing looks fine and on the right track. If anything, I'll be needing crits from you.

If there's any very specific opinions you're looking for I'd be glad to help.

You have some nice stuff, but the anime just makes me cringe every time i see it. Not because it's bad anime or anything, but i just feel anime is the antithesis to creativity. I just feels like it really tarnishes your otherwise great sketchbook. That's just personal opinion though.

ArtZealot: I agree with you how drawing anime can pull away some creativity. The storying telling in some of the genre can be captivating. I'll continue to explore styles and not just get hooked on one. "It's not the style or school that counts, its how hard you train." Thanks

Very Nice! I see you have the Anatomy for the Artist book. I noticed some references you used. Thats a great book. May I recommend Dynamic Anatomy, a great book for references and ideas. Keep it up kid. Also, Anatomy for Fantasy Artists is an awesome one too. Rock on.
