sea of figures

finally got around to scanning in some slides last week of some big stuff i did a while back. its always hard for me to get digital copies of all the stuff i do thats bigger than a scanner. oh well.

anyways i worked up this drawing with graphite on a large sheet of lenox that i toned with oil and turp. i used some life drawing sketches to develop some of the figures in the foreground, making up alot of it as i went along.

oh yeah...its pretty large 40" x 50" , so its been tough to get a good detailed photo

yeah.. um here it is

any feedback is appreciated

really nice drawing ! dynamic and great use of the figure ..

good use of a flowing compostion too.. top notch.. should be pleased and proud of this piece

the orange/brown is from the toning? if so i think it adds another layer of complexity and emphasis on certain areas.

that is a nice size too !

ps. i just checked out your website.. you are very talented ! really like the energy and line/brush work in your pieces, it brings real life to your works.. and elevates them beyond the page

not to toot my own horn , but perhaps you could take a look at my thread i posted (pencil and gesso) i would love to hear some feed back from you, what you think of it or anything

the Charcoal and gesso, 36" x 44". one with the 2 figures is just beautiful !

I had the chance to see this one in person. Its pretty intimidating how big it is. Wes, that night the seven samuri was showing is when I saw it in the halls. It had a nice crowd of people in ranged ages looking at it too. BTW.. did you ever get any offers from someone who may have wanted to buy it? I'm curious.

Also.. Has anyone found waldo yet?

what an ambitious work of art. thanks for posting it Wess it made my day, I really enjoy how you have rendered the figures.

I like the chaos that the turpentine has caused but I dont think it is adding to the composition.

I would definately hang something like that up on my wall

thanks guys, sorry for taking forever to reply, i went out of town right after posting this.

nicodemus- thanks man, yeah the brown and orange is from the oil toning. this slide doesnt really show it correctly though...the picture has an overal tone, not like how the left side is light here. that must be from the lighting i used for my slide shooting.
ill go look for your thread now

davi- hahah yeah theres a few robert poses in there.
for those who dont know, davi and i both live in cleveland and end up drawing alot of the same models...we can recognize the models in each others drawings no problem now hehe

coma- thanks, yeah i wasnt really sure about posting it this small, it doesnt feel the same as looking at the original, oh well, glad you enjoy it

android- thanks alot, glad to hear your feedback...i agree about the turpentine, i think it fuses together a little better in person though. also its not so light on the left side in reality, the whole thing is like the right half
