    Rafael - Improvement Sketchbook

    Hi!!
Well, I'm starting this topic because I really want to improve my 2D skills. I've been working as 3D artist since the last four years and at the final of last year I started to draw while waiting for renders and I really enjoy it .. I'll post some drawings and doodles and please feel free to critic and say what should be improved. I know I should start with the foundations but there are so many and I just don't know how to start it.

Ah.. I'm kind of lost about what I like to draw\paint.. But I think that I
    rather doing environments and cartoons

EDIT: As the thumb was showing the 3D works I decided to put them at the end of this post.. again, please feel free to critic and help me go forward because I really want to get better.

About the 3D: The first one is a creepy bunny that loves his mom, and the second one is real time rendered low poly based on Liliana Vess from Magic The Gathering.

    Best to you all,

    Rafael

And this is what I started doing this weekend.. and then started to add some colors\mood - I think this step is too big for me now, it's better to back to foundations (yeah specially perspective)..

First let me say your 3D works are unbelievable! I'm liking your 2Ds as of now, just study some of the fundamentals. For example, your first drawing (the one with the trees) looks a bit off; sit in the park and just draw a bunch of trees, that should do the trick. Drawing trees isn't the easiest thing to do, especially with all that foliage, which is hard to convey with pen, so props for trying!

Your latest piece (the one with the bridge) looks pretty cool! You've got some lovely colors on the sky, remember they should also be reflected on the water.

Can't wait to see some of your human sketches

Thank you for your words!! I'm really glad you liked my 3D work!
About the trees, well.. I was happy while was shading the trunks but when I got to the top of the trees.. that was tough! Then I realized that this thing requires a lot of study! :p

About human sketches, actually I made some between december and january! It will be attached in this post

Wow! Your 3D stuff is pretty awesome!

I think it's good that you are trying to branch out into 2D. The more variety the better, eh? Plus the drawing skills should help you with your 3D work too.

I notice you are doing a few environment/perspective drawings... have you tried any still life studies? It might help with the rendering and structure side of things.

Other than that, just keep at it... drawing can be a bit demoralizing, but it can also be really rewarding too!

    Thank you Syrella!
You are totally right! The base of any art medium is the same! And knowing 3D is helping me to draw.. and as I'm studying drawing I noticed that I'm getting better on 3D too! They helps each other.
About drawing from stills, you are right too! I never did this and I was thinking about it yesterday.. I really need doing this!

Made my first painting from still today. Actually I made base on the "Teracotta Pot" of this site: http://www.wetcanvas.com/RefLib/show...y.php?cat=3686

    Two things to remember:

    - I noticed that I always forget the image and start to paint from imagination and this makes me lost. - So I need to double the attention.

    - I really don't know what brush\opacity\flow to use.. need seeing some digital painting tutorial..

About drawing itself, yesterday I bought the Figure Drawing For All It's Work and I just can't wait to get the book! But Amazon says that the book will arrive only at June :/

guh... that rabbit.. I swear I can smell its breath..

You're great at rendering. However, your pencil work, by comparison, is lacking. I would suggest traditional sketching more, perhaps even with a pen to make you focus on linework. Also, more figure work and gestures.

Some cool stuff, basically I'd reiterate what others are saying. Nice 3d work fer sure and nice rendering. I can comment more on the background stuff and perspective.

I think the first thing you'd want to do is drop in a horizon line. Google 1 point perspective and vanishing points and check out some sites. After doing a few of those, try 2 point perspective with 2 vanishing points.

You're off to a good start, looking forward to more!

I'm pretty sure you'll be drawing in no time, especially with your 3D looking like that.

What 3D programs do you work with? And do you do your own UV's and lighting?

I ask, cause you pretty much already have all the skills right there. I'd say all you really need to do is see shapes like you would in 3D. As for rendering, I don't think it'd vary too much from your 3D work. Which is already amazing!

Just gotta learn how to make that knowledge come out of the tools.
