Hey CAers! Got the e-mail blast today and thought I'd stop by. Some killer, killer work happening here as usual.

(I seem to start a new thread once a year or so, and am wondering if this is the best way to do this or if I should merge them into one? Any thoughts for the moderators on this, let me know!)

So I finally started a blog where I am posting art experiments and step by steps and the such. These are some images form that. If you get a chance stop by and check out the tutorials. If you know my work, you know I can't hold still and am always trying new things. I am hoping the blog will be a place for it!

The thing I am playing with right now is trying some digital watermedia techniques, and painting areas with one click of interesting brushes.

Saw a killer portrait of Snoop by Jeremy Lipking (his is better) and got inspired to slap around some spatter brushes.


Playing with calligraphy style brush shapes for things like hair.


I don't do nearly enough Dragons, which is funny since I am largely known as a fantasy artist.


This is a bit of a cleaner watercolor style.


And this was my first attempt at mimicking watercolor.

Always a pleasure to see new artworks from you. I crossed a picture I have of you when you the demo at the art students league a few years ago. I believe you were working on a Frankenstein character for a childrens book... Very cool. Thanks for the inspiration

Here is a recent Novel cover. The last in a series I have been doing for a while.

Also I am having a blast on a new Middle grade fiction series called Scary School. Where your teachers are things like Dragons and vampires. Covers and inside illustrations done with ball point pen.

Great works. Not sure you completely captured Snoops likeness but I thought it was him lol. Overall you have a great style with tons of personality.

I've always enjoyed your work Scott because you have your own voice when it comes to digital painting and mark making. It's guys like you that take advantage of pushing the boundaries of a new medium. It kind of makes me wonder why you are imitating a traditional medium like watercolor with the computer. Not a crit just a question.

Thanks Bill! I think I fell in love with traditional watercolor last year. Something about the pooling effects and randomness. So I wanted to see if I could get some of that feeling digitally.

But in the end, these experiments will get assimilated into my bag of technique and will peek out here and there along with the other stuff I do.

Thanks guys! Andrelexis, I just did 6 cards for MTG. My biggest contribution to MTG in years. 5 of them should hit in fall and the 6th is something special they have cooked up for summer 2013. It felt good to dip back in that pool.

So I guess i will just keep adding to this thread for 2012. Here is a head study done for a novel cover I am working on. Really I just wanted to see if I could put some of my experiments to work on a real gig. Most of this head will get used, but it still needs some tweaking. I will attach the WIP from my blog too.
