I'm trying to put together a character art portfolio, this will be a thread of my adventures along the way. Here's my first, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I always find I have trouble refining and sharpening up details.

You are off to a great start. This is a fun character concept. The anatomical form on his arm looks fake and forced though. You should tone it down and break out your anatomy book for this one.
You should also research your background. It could use some flora and fauna. If he's standing in a creek it will need to react to him.
Awesome, thanks Raoul. Will do. Reference reference reference! I'd also like some advice on how to approach building a proper portfolio. I'm sure there are some threads addressing this already, so if anyone has any links handy, I'd appreciate it. I'm curious on what types of things, characters, creatures, environments are needed.
Looking good. I just made a small page with some thoughts of mine. Hope that its useful

Wow Andreas, great feedback!
No problemo. Good work![]()
Pushing values and cleaning up. Still need to pull some reference for the environment.
So I jumped into another piece, this time a creature. Just started playing around with this. Lots more to be worked on, but anything you think I should approach differently? Looking at it for a while now, it feels very very simple. Is it the lack of texture density/complexity? Lack of features/details on the animal itself?

Start of a landscape. A bit generic, but will ref some architecture for the background.
Nice landscape. I like the composition![]()
