My sketchbook - initiae

Hi ! my name is Sebastien, i'm from belgium and i would like to know " if " i can do something with what 'im doing. I did a lot by myself( self-educated ? no sure about the word ! ) i have a lot of trouble to find a job in " art " or graphic in Belgium.


Well i would like to know if sometimes you could just put somes critics ( they are always usefull ! ) about what i'm doing.

The first thing you need to do is start doing a lot of studys... with pencil and paper. It is easier to learn with pencil because it removes a lot of variables that often cause artists problems. It is great for learning value and edge control. Try to do at least one per day.

After you've been doing these for awhile try doing copies of other artist's work (not claiming it as your own, but just for study). This is where you'll learn other artist's secrets. It is the FASTEST way to get better.

I'll be honest here. You have a ways to go with your rendering skills, but you do have some very good ideas. Spend sometime going back to the basics and your art will greatly benefit.

When you talk about studys, i guess you mean like stuying any objetcs/persons ? To learn the shape and light/shadow ?

For you should i focus on studying or can i do sometimes somes digital paiting ?
because to be honest i'm " afraid " to lose my " way to draw " i don't know if it's normal to be afraid of that )

Don't feel bad about the English problem. I don't speak much French.

Don't stop digital painting, just add the studies. You have the right idea about the studies. Objects, people, places for shapes, perspective, and light/shadow (values).

Having a ways to go is a figurative expression. It means that rendering is something that you need to work on. It is not a bad thing. It is not a good thing. It just is. There reaches a point when an artist should stop thinking about good or bad and think about the learning process. Everything you do, you should learn from. Don't think it's bad, learn from it. The next one will be better.

about the rocky worm thing, i just remember a scene of mission to mars, where i saw a giant TornadoWormThing going down on a man ! But i will see what is this worm in wow !

I was watching you works for a copule of days here and there but i didn't had time to post here before so i'm doing it now:

You need to study perspective... a lot, much more than painting technique. Right now you're painting in 2d and it's clear My advice is to start studying perspective, giveup colors for some time and use just greyscale to learn value separation. Go with default round brush for painting and use manual opacity to get used to the functioning. When you're drawing with this setup just do 15 or 30 minute piece then move to another one, it helps your brain to focus on what's important and to learn the tools faster.


This will help you improve a lot faster give it a try and let us know!

i appreciate your help everyone ! i never had the chance and never had confidence on me to took Art school, but even if i'm not the good artist of my country ... i"m "happy " when im drawing, i really want to persevere in that thing and maybe changing my carrer ... because i'm not happy where i am .. at all !


Well i bought a sketche book and somes pencils ! The world is mine now !

Your studies in pencil show a lot of improvement. You are on the right track keep it up. I recommend starting a sketchbook thread in the sketchbook section of this site and start posting all of your studies there. You will get a lot more feedback over there... more if you take the time to comment on other people's sketchbooks. It would also help because you would have people that are around the same level as you to learn with.

I think your stuff shows a lot of confidence which is good, the bold brush strokes and "minimalist" approach, something I lack.
