    ChoW#284 :: Northern Hunter

    Character of the Week #284
    Northern Hunter

Design a hunter character from the frozen North of a fantasy world

DEADLINE: SUNDAY 15th APRIL 9PM GMT
    Check your timezone!

In the warmer, southern lands, hunting is a sport of kings, where long summer afternoon can be leisurely spent drinking and riding, whilst tracking a fatted boar, or specially bred deer and the only danger is falling from the horse in a drunken stupor. However hunting practices for the Northern lands couldn't be more different. The Great North is a cold and treacherous place where even nature itself is a ruthless killer. Hunting is a task performed by only the most skilled and fearless, one who has perfected their art and memorised the landscape. Northern Hunters train so that any arrow they fire, or spear they throw will hit their mark, not just wounding their target but killing it in a single shot. A missed shot could mean no food for days. This skill makes them the best marksmen bar none, surpassing all others. They are silent and swift, almost assassin-like. They are so well adapted, they can move through their surroundings completely un-noticed, using pelts and scents that allow them to blend is as well as survive the bitter cold.

Your task is to design one of these great hunters. They must be able to move quickly to keep up with prey and away from predators. They must also be able to survive in freezing conditions and repair their armour and weapons with whatever they can find in the wilderness

This is a fantasy world, and although magic exists, it is rare and barely used by anyone in the Great North. At most, they might be able to start a fire, or see through the eyes of their prey/other predators, however these skills would be very limited...

    The Guidelines:
    • Can be any gender
    • Must be fantasy
    • Must be dressed appropriately for their job and to survive the conditions.
    • Will use weapons they can easily fix/create ammo for (Guns are allowed, but think about how they might make more bullets)
    • They have to fight off other predators as well as taking down their prey so it is likely that they will carry scars and battle wounds.

    THE RULES
In addition to the brief, if you do not follow these rules, you will not be included in the poll.
    • Files must be named: CHoW#284_Username
(Files with any other names such as final.jpg or even chow284final.jpg will not be accepted)
    • Finals must be posted in the finals thread BEFORE the deadline
    • Final post must include the CHoW number and the artists username at the bottom of the image
    • At least 3/4 of the focus character must be visible
    • Final images must be accompanied with a basic character sheet in a separate image
Character sheets should at the very least show a sketch of the front and back of the character and a couple of early thumbnails/silhouettes.
    • Follow the brief!

Loving this one, although I'm unsure of the exact timeline, you're mentioning guns and arrows, and the only time I can think of where both a gun and a bow were viable weapons is the years leading up to the american revolution. Flintlock pistols and barrel-loaded rifles. But I suppose this is fantasy, so is World of warcraft level technology in play? IE: advanced in some ways, but not in others.

Guns are used in a number of different fantasy settings, although warcraft is a good example of the level of technology.

    @Eofn, great!

@Kahel, i realy like the clothing and how you are showing everything separately.
@YouAreNotAlone, very good looking design but is looking too heavy and movement constrained, thus not allowing to move so quicly.

Very cool and dinamic character Parsakoira!

    cheers.

Hehe. More like: paperclip + braided penguin feathers = HARPOON OF DEATH

First sketch. It's hard to draw alot of scars and wounds, because he wrapped up in clothes and fur from head to foot =D He uses blades and harpoons made from animal bones and small charms, which allows him to see animal's trails, even old ones and erase his own smell so he can crawl close enough to his prey while being unnoticed.

Quick roughs. A bit inspired by Mongolian nomads. I imagine these guys would live within clans or tribes of some sort. Hrmn. It's a bit of a challenge trying to keep the wardrobe to a minimum to facilitate quick, stealthy movements, but at the same time be enough to stay warm. Maybe in this fantasy world they use some sort of streamlined thermal blubber suits haha.

Gonna throw my hat in the ring too. Hope I can take this to a good level.

A problem I can see with this theme is that when people start dressing for cold weather they become more and more shapeless..have to work really hard to keep interesting shapes.

    Parsakoira
Cool guy. He's firing he's crossbow in the run.
    Tom94
vibrant description. In my point of view the man is a bit of balance. I would move his upper body more above the hips.
    Paper Jester
    Looks like a tuff guy

Trolljack that character is looking great! and so is to see all the different interpretations.

Some sketches..trying to focus more on design and design process. The last one wont make it because of the weight but i may keep some idea from it.

I've gone with using Bark as a primary armour material. Not one for fighting in the open, I plan to design a hunter that stalks from the tree's.

I'll have some more sketches on who's behind the mask tomorrow once I can access my scanner.
Though she doesn't look like it in this doodle, I'm going for a female orc/human breed.

    A start:]

    very nice all.

YouAreNotAlone: Love it. Especially that u went for the harpoon as a weapon.
Kahel: Great start! Always love notes on sketches. Also might wanna experiment w/ weapons. Definitely u got the clothes down alrdy.
Parsakoira: What can I say... Awesome. Quick and rough and communicates everything!! Design's spot on.
tsujni: Like the female one especially. Play more w/ silhouettes.
Tom94: Nice texture on the fur. Mite wanna redo the pose. Get someone to pose for u or pose urself and take a photograph.
Ironbyte : Nice. On its way already. and nice pencil work. Also those wrapppings, try and play around w/ those. Put em on different places maybe ot maybe they're made of different material.
audit: I like the mask version a lot. Love the strip in the chest too.
PaperJester : Love the linework. Cant wait to see it finished.
JanJager: Upper middle pose i like the most.
Trolljack: Very nice weapon!! And a nice take on the armor too.
elephant´s stroke: like the middle sketch most. Almost ghoulish and hunched.
    maxscomputer: Love the variety.
