    Spartan Camp #219 - 50 gestures + Optional "Character Redesign Study

    Spartan Camp #219 - 50 gestures + Optional "Character Redesign Study"

    The aim is to produce 50 gestures by Sunday the 8th of April.

    - The gestures can be of anything, human, animal, cavorting capybaras.... You can draw full figures, but you can also go for heads, arms, eyes, or anything specific. All media can be used, both digital or traditional. Coloured or black/white. Quick scribbles or long studies. Imagination or referenced. Clothed or nude. Specifics are up to you!

    - In addition to this, participants can choose to do an Optional "Character Redesign Study", in any medium.
    Additional notes on this weeks’ Optional Study:

    A recreational optional study this week! There's not a whole lot to explain here. Take a fictional character from any franchise or universe and create a redesign. Whether you go for small alterations or a complete overhaul is up to you. No need for elaborate character designs, you can go for a sketch.
    There is no specific reference for this topic. Searching Google, Deviantart or any art site for "(character)redesign" can get you some ideas. A particularly well known example is the X-men redesigns by Marko Djurdjevic.

    Next weeks optional study:
    "Different angle figure study": Pick a reference figure, draw the figure from a completely different angle.

    As always- reference advised, not obligatory. Colour, medium, time frame, any specifics are up to you! Good luck and have fun! And feel free to ask questions!

    50 poses is a challenge, but don't hurry or stress yourself reaching it! Focus on drawing, as practising is the main goal of this exercise.

    Criticizing each other is highly encouraged!! Share constructive criticism, reference images and resources!! Let's help each other get better!

    Come on soldiers! Flex those muscles!!

    @R3u5
    I like the chaos in those, but I think its best to move away from cartoony studies unless thats all you intend on drawing. All imagination is grounded in realism.

    @Ashess
    Left over feet eh? They're a bit light though, darken em up or ill spend my life squinting .

    @Eclipse
    well done with the gestures, i think you shouldnt post them so large though. Try scanning and then just making a single image of gestures. It has a double function:

    One is to make sure you don't fall into giving much importance to gestures as a finished product, and the other is to test how well they read. If your gestures read at small sizes they'll read at large.

    @AdrianNagorski
    Productive as always I see Keep goin with them feet, I find my lack of attention to structure and form over anatomy has been a mistake. Time to try and make up for it though .

    ----
    mostly from imagination:

    Oh How I hate heads and connecting them to bodies. I wish we had evolved as headless bodies *le sigh*

    R3u5: exquisite designs donald and stewie are my favourites, makes me
    rethink my approach to character redesigning. good job

    Little-Maiden: beautiful figures, i'm just trying to keep up with you! draw more
    animals their neck connection to torso/abdomen is more pronounced , image them as tubes connecting to large shape masses??? might help.

    untier: tasty feet

    ashess: nice feet, the legs got 'em curves! maybe try the legs with fewer strokes?

    Some quickie Spartacus Season 2 episode 1 gestures and random wild life.

    eclip-se : thank you that song is great i love it! also the perspective tools are a great find as well!! Consider the flow of the curves of each limb
    like you have the torso as a circle, do curves for the arms instead of straight lines even over lapping as i have done with my rock climbers.

    Anthis: thank you kind Sir, bookmarked.

    untier: was it you that posted that feet link last week? i saw it and i didnt have time last week to draw any, so i did them this week
    its a good link. also avoid using the soft round brush it makes things look smudged/muddy, i make that mistake tons. also you can tell you used the hard brush
    as well, so i would recommend sticking to just one solid brush all the way for now.

    I just love me a good rock climb.

    @Anthis - I didn't know Ryan Woodward until i visited your link, awesome stuff

    some subjective feedbacks:

    @Adrian - gorgeous feet. The redesign has a strange posture probably due to the proportions between head, torso and limbs.

    @untier - in the second redesign the head seems little and in the wrong position, the feet are standing on different perspective grids or the shadowing and the lighting (the same for thigh and lower leg ) trick the eye making it seem like the leg is completely extended and not standing the ground.

    @Little-Maide - those are almost anatomy studies that could be used as references themselves, very clean and readable.

    ∞ else - good work everyone,

    @Anthis: That site is pretty cool, thank you very much! *bookmark*

    @eclip-se: I like how you captured the movement of your figures with just a few lines And thanks for the perspective flash thingie!

    All the feet goodness here, haha
    ---

    My contribution. Every pose is between 5 and 10 minutes with a few exceptions when the pose was really hard for me. The goal was to draw 50 full body gestures, being fast in the beginning and detailed at the end. I hope it's not too big.

    Thank you, everyone, especially AdrianNagorski. If it were not you, I wouldn't be aware that the hard, solid brush is such a key for coolness.

    I also realize that my works are a little bit too detailed for anatomy study? Is it good that I stick to this style here? And the deadline is near, but it's time that I felt asleep...

    @Ashess Careful with the balance of your figures. Static poses are easiest to give balance to, just find the chin/nose and draw a straight line down. That should give you the centre of gravity as well as the position where the most weight is placed.

    @Marin That size is fine They're all nice 5-10 min gestures. You've reminded me to try some of them again, recently ive found myself drifting back to short quick gestures >.<.

    I sort of went through all this in a daze.

    As already mentioned in my SB I need to go over my pelvis and leg joint approach again.

    I think my optional char redesign attempt is pretty obvious :p

    I don't know what's wrong with me. I suppose at some rarely-extreme-dead -corner-time my brain would be collapsed bad... Perhaps because it's too late in my time zone when I posted the last works, I didn't read much, even skipped the title... I forgot character redesign is a theme of this topic too... I feel really chilling~~ Please pray for me. I do not wanna be defeated by Alzheimer’s disease!

    Got outside a couple times this week for life drawing. Also spent a few hours today doing sketches from the movie "Chinatown". Dinner is starting soon, so no critiques right now. ;-) I'll do some when I get back to Santa Barbara and get some sleep.

    No character redesign yet.

    talking about perspective (eclipse possted a link)

    I've been wondering about something, and I cannot find the answer in any of the tutorials on perspective. they all just pass by the problem as if it isnt there. so maybe im missing something obvious. so please if any1 knows clear this up for me...
    -when you construct a figure, you usually do this by using cubes in space.
    -to figure how big the cubes need to be relative to eachother- the sides effected by forshortening to a fanishingpoint, you can use diagonals to calculate all the squares but your starting square.
    so how do you get your starting square? I usually just eyeball, but I've been noticing I tend to eyeball wrong. so the question:
    -if you have one lenght of the cube, and you know the fanishing point, can one calculate the other side of that cube- the length of the line running to the fanishing point?

    @ashess
    In a way, all placements are correct.

    The starting square depends on how big your field of view is and the distance of the square to the viewpoint. Think of it like a photo - if you zoom in to something far away, the distant object is fairly flat.

    A quick way to check the "natural" perspective from your intended viewpoint is to move your head to that location and close one eye. This will remove parallax depth cues and force your mind to see based on perspective alone. If you have your initial perspective lines in place, you should be able to visualize what distance looks natural.

    untier, I understand your sorrow! I even forgot to put stuff here!

    Little-Maiden:
    Nice optional, the eyes aren't on the same level vertically though.

    I'm so tired. I was quite inactive this week too but I surely have some messy stuff to show. I'm... sorry?

    I'm really sorry. This week I'll bring nicer stuff, I promise.

    No optional. It's tragic because it's really something that suits me perfectly, I love to redesign characters. I didn't do it lately, unfortunately.

    in the end, I took the after-timeskip version and did how I'd have liked to see him. so, I think I did ok in the end.
