Hunting to Find True Original Image

Hey Concept Art, I came here because some image source search engines weren't helping much.

A friend of mine works as a professor at an art school and is helping run a contest for the students. They got a hold of the attached image here and immediately saw it was a paint-over of something else. You can see that there are style contraindications between the tops strokes and that background.

We have not been able to place the original image, all we know if that its a sci-fi thing and it says San Francisco in the background.

If anyone here recognizes it please let me know, as this contest thing is a bit time sensitive.

It looks to me like they used a few photos as part of their work. I'm not so sure it is a paintover as you call it since it looks to me to be mostly painted with some photos used only a bit for the lights from the windows. What are the rules of the contest? This may not actually be anything that serious, just an attempt at matte painting with a fairly standard procedure.

It's either a really shitty matte painting, or a paintover. Things like the "san francisco" area. Are obviously not part of what the person made. Then there's shapes here and there that don't match the inconsistent almost random scribbling.

Then there's the sign of the camera lens flare type circles that look terrible.

The person either used photos, a cloud brush and other custom brushes, or it's not his and he painted over it. Because the area with the clouds is blended for instance. While in the upper left corner just to the right of the building there is no blending, just more pointless scribbles.

The area around the clouds just doesn't match up to the rest at all, then the san francisco sign once again also not made by the artist. The pointless scribbles show little skill or focus, while that area......

I love the lens flare on the bottom.

(On topic, sorry, I don't recognize it. But any time anybody starts defacing their work with crappy Photoshop filters, I get a little suspicious.)

People, this is why it's not bad to use a ruler!

But some reason the bottom right is naggingly familiar. That I've seen something similar to that before

My professor friend has resolved things on their end. They have submitted the case to the higher ups at the school and they are going to ask the student to supply the "materials" he/she used to make this.

Thanks for the help though guys!

From the title of this thread I was expecting a much more esoteric discussion.
