    Wasp Massive Black/Steambot Studios workshop

    Hi Everyone!

Since no announcement has been done yet, and in the name of the organizers, I thought I'd drop in (after quite a long time buried under my wacom) and mention the upcoming massive black workshop.

    http://www.massiveblackworkshop.com/

Massive black, Steambot Studios, Six More vodka and safe house atelier will run the show in Beautiful San Francisco. We all hope to meet you there!
Tons of artists, tons of goodies, tons of learning, tons of industry contacts and a nice way to pump up your creativity for the rest of the year!

Looking forward to meet all of you in a mayhem of pixels, ink and paint and share techniques and thoughts.

    David "Vyle" Levy
    CEO steambot studios.

    Fourthed!

The workshop itself is actually very reasonably priced (and possible for me), especially compared to some of the 3 day "Master Class" workshops held around my neck of the woods. My trouble is more about affording the plane tickets and hotel rooms.

And to think I used to live in SF...
"Contrary to the belief of the layman, the essential of art is not to imitate nature, but under the guise of imitation to stir up excitement with pure plastic elements: measurements, directions, ornaments, lights, values, colors, substances, divided and organized according to the injunctions of natural laws. While so occupied, the artist never ceases to be subservient to nature, but instead of imitating the incidents in a paltry way, he imitates the laws."-Andre Lhote

I've been wanting to attend a MB workshop for years... this might just be the time. Working out the logistics now.

Since I first joined this site, I've been wanting to go to a workshop and now I may finally have the chance! Is it okay to ask questions here or should we email them?

Hey KT>> I am sure it is ok to ask the questions there, I'll do my best to answer what I know about, and if I don't I'll point you in the right direction.

That said (about me being poor), I still have a mind to save up for this. Ticket is $450, Plane ticket is gonna be maybe $350 round trip, food could be limited to $75, probably should have at least $100 spending money... that puts me up next to $1000 and I haven't even found lodging yet (hoping i could possibly couch surf). Damn... that's gonna be really tough to come up with. We'll see how it goes!

This was quite unexpected and pleasant news to hear having just moved to SF literally two weeks ago.

If anyone is going to be staying in Marin (or the north bay in general like Petaluma) and wants to commute in with me, send me a message.

Is the venue within walking distance from a bart station?

@Vyle: Thanks for the heads up about hotels. I checked out what they had so far. Do you know if they're planning on adding more hotel sponsors or is what's up there now pretty much it?

I take it the nearest parking space would be even further then the bart station. It's only about a mile walk. I think I can hoof it, but walking with all those materials could be a problem. I take it oils are going to be used. Alot can go wrong with those messy, wet, smelly, amazing things.

There's a whole lot of free parking on Townsend which is only a block away. The hard part of course is actually finding a spot.

Like what? It's tubes of vegetable oil.

If you can make it across town with a tube of toothpaste without anything terrible happening, well you'll be alright with paint.

Hey guys, I got more details from the organizers! here are some answers. Also if you need more details please ask:
    [email protected]

@Hyskoa: Not sure what European one you’re talking about. We did one in Berlin last June

@KT: Please email [email protected] with any questions

@jpacer: We’ve negotiated some rate with hotels in the area, be sure to check the site, www.massiveblackworkshop.com in the next few days for details

@Raoul Duke: It’s probably about a 20 min walk from the Civic Center Bart station, good news is its all flat groundJ. It’s probably a $5-8 cab ride. The 27 Muni goes by Harrison and 7th, about a block away; and the 19 Muni stops at 8th and Brannan. Also there’s tons of parking around the area, I think there’s a garage at the Design Center a few blocks away.

Okay, Thanks Vyle. Well this question is probably not answerable at this time, but I wanted to know if the tickets will be sold out by mid October. Also, Is it okay if you don't plan on attending the portfolio review(I'm nowhere near the skill level to actually be hired right now.) I'm sorry for such stupid questions. EDIT: Sorry, I posted really late and didn't see the new posts. I'll e-mail my questions.

Vyle-thank you. I'll go ahead and bring my car on whatever day is best to bring materials. I'm actually looking forward to hoofing it there on the rest.

flake-I'm just running a material list in my head and preparing myself for murphies law and thinking about precautions to take. We've all had those terp/galkyd disasters where you wind up with spills and embearassing stains. It's also not such a good idea to bring a wet canvas on bart.

The organizers are telling me to point you to their FAQ area too in case you want a direct communication
    http://www.massiveblackworkshop.com/#!__faq/questions

@KT: don't be too affraid about having your portfolio reviewed too early, usually the professionals can help you even at an early level. It is hard to do so by email, but in a live situation that is much easier, so you should definitely use that occasion!

So, then it's okay if we don't have any color work or painting in our portfolio's? I'm not equipped to start painting immediately but maybe I can have something by november. Also, the portfolios have to be professional looking right? Again, sorry for the stupid questions and I'll email my questions if it's too much trouble.

I have an awesome solution for parking! I do this all the time when I go to day shows at Slim's or the DNA. The Costco parking lot is free and open to the public. Costco is right around the corner from SOMA Arts. http://g.co/maps/cbfr4 The catch is that the Costco lot closes at 8, so if you park there you have to make sure to get it out before then. But still, free parking all day!
