    Jeff Miracola Fantasy Art

Here is some of my fantasy art. The black and white drawings are all brush & ink. The painting is done with oils. I posted the painting in an earlier thread, but I'm going to try and consolidate all of my fantasy art in this one thread now. It's easier to update.

Here is a video of me working on one of my brush & ink drawings:

    Hope you enjoy.

Here are some more brush & ink drawings. These are just a few of the drawings that I am putting into a book that collects many of my personal drawings and sketches from many of my fantasy gaming projects for Magic: the Gathering, World of Warcraft, Judge Dredd, Shadowrun, Dungeons & Dragons and more. The book will be available at Gen Con August 4-7 and Chicago Comic Con August 11-14.

Hi Jeff - In a odd way, your name has popped up amongst friends of mine a bunch of times now. I work at Laughlin Constable with Dennis J. I also was taught by Jim Wiemer in college and know quite a few of the ID designers out at DCI. In short, I'm not stalking you, it's just a small world When I saw you had a new thread started, I had to say hello.

Anyway, I've been digging your work for awhile now, and love these new additions. They have a "woodcut" sense about them, just on the pure intricacy of the line work. Fantastic characters too, as always. Do you do any thumb nailing to figure out composition before you begin one of these? Would love to know more about your process.

Being an aspiring illustrator/concept artist myself, would you have any tips for a guy trying to break into the business? I'm starting to work with Fantasy Flight games currently, but would love to gain some more traction. If you would be so kind, please take a look at my sketchbook link, if you have the time.

    Again, great, great stuff. Cheers!

    - Chris Metcalf

    Hey Chris,

Wow, it is a small world. I've been meaning to hook up with Dennis again just to get lunch together one of these days. You should join us. Maybe Dennis can bring you over to my house as well. That way, you can take a look at my artwork in person and we can talk process, which is always fun. I can also talk to you about breaking into the business and all that stuff, which is too much to list out here.

For some drawings I do thumbnails, others I don't. I don't have a set process for that. For client work I always do sketches and thumbnails, but for personal work I sometimes just jump right in and see where it takes me.

I took a look at your sketchbook and am really digging it. You've got some incredible work there. I'm most curious to see how that oil painting is going to tun out.

I'll call Dennis and tell him we should all get together. Maybe this week?

The painting is pretty awesome. And done with actual oils, makes it really impressive!

That would be awesome! Any opportunity to get a closer look at your work/insight would be greatly appreciated on my part. I'm open to this week, or whenever works for you. I see Dennis multiple times per day, so I'm sure he'll mention it to me after you guy's get a chance to chat.

I'm glad you mentioned the piece in oil in particular. It's a beautiful medium to work with, and is an epic journey every time. There can be so many happy surprises along the way when your working with oil. I'd like to paint in it more often, but really need to get a dedicated space for it set up. I painted that out of my apartment, having to pack up all of my gear at the end of each session, which was really a challenge, but tons of fun to do regardless.

My Mermaid painting made it into Spectrum 19. The painting is 21"x24" oil on wood panel. I've included a few progress photos, too.

My book, Monstrosity - A Book of Drawings, is now available. You can learn about it here: http://www.jeffmiracola.com/books_an...s/monstrosity/

Also, I'll be at Spectrum Fantastic Live In Kansas City, MO May 18-20. So if you're there, stop by to say hello.

Wow! Nice work! I work in mostly ink, so I'm partial more to the ink work, but it's all great!
