    In My Head~

Hi! I'm hoping that this sketchbook will motivate me to draw and paint more.
I (was 15 when started) from the US. I've been drawing since I could hold a pencil, but only got serious in the past year or so. My passion is really drawing people, so you'll see a lot of portraits. Please help me to improve in any way you can.

I know I haven't updated this in forever but here's some more stuff.
The graphite and Katy Perry were photostudies. The rest were not referenced. A few of these were my daily faces, which I'm trying to draw one every day of summer.

This took me like 10 days in all. I'd still like critique though!

More stuff Haven't been very productive portfolio wise, but I did a lot of studies and practices

The skull was a photostudy, the candy was a lifestudy (iPad). The last girl was also an iPad pic with no reference I didn't get to finish because it was knocked over. The Alice picture is quite old AHHH the anatomical issues

Thank you, I do need to refine and blend more. My knowledge of anatomy is pretty crummy.
Here's a scrap, I realize it sucks, so any help is appreciated.

Whoah, some very nice stuff in here! Your portraits from imagination are impressive, everything is actually. Not really sure what to crit on seeing that you're a lot more advanced than me. If there's one thing I guess it would be the eyes, some of them don't seem to curve in the three quarter views. Apart from that it's looking great, more zombie stuff, it really turned out great!
    Keep up the great work!

I really like your color selection in the stuff that was done from scratch, and your rendering is also great. However, I think you should practice drawing your own hands, arms, feet, and legs at different angles because it helped me quite a bit. That's the only real advice from a fellow Louisianian can give.

Nice studies! Your painting's coming along, it was too smooth and fuzzy but I see you're starting to incorporate harder edges.

I concur that you should try to mix it up. Do something other than a pretty girl portrait, draw some full bodies and action poses and different body and face types. Keep at it!

I do need more variety, but I just feel like anything other than people is boring. I'm working on anatomy and haven't gotten around to sketchbook scans yet.
My rendering isn't as smooth as I'd like. I used to have paint tool SAI which had an amazing blender. Photoshop makes me do it manually
Anyway, expect more anatomy studies I may eventually even get to creatures and landscapes.

Here's an anatomy study and an old portrait.

U better study faces from scratch. Pick a book with all constructions and just copy more more more. U have that anime/semi realism tendency which is ok, but it still lacks some basics in it. Just as u mentioned, more anatomy.
    great job anyway

Got a new wand scanner. Much faster than a flatbed, but if you don't scan evenly and smoothly a little distortion occurs. Expect more sketches

you got great works, but I think that you should work on necks - they are a little bit too stiff

Thanks for stopping by my SB!

I agree with your advice on the sharper pencil, but I'm trying to get used to drawing with the side of the pencil as much as I can so I generally need to retrace drawings since I do them with the side as much as I can which ends up leaving alot more white spots than usual. Ah well, not so much bothered by spots anymore as much as I am by bad proportions or poor values.

    ---

As for your own work, I have to say that I really like the painterly approach you've chosen throughout your work. You've certainly got a great handle on photoshop brushes, much more than me at least. You seem to have a very strong background in portrait drawing, and it shows. I'm only beginning my path in art, but so far im jumping around from figure, portrait, enviro etc etc. I suggest that you take more time to study the human figure, Unless you plan on doing portraits only (which is fine, some people choose to specialise afterall). I find that faces at a distance really bother me more than portraits.

So yeah, great work! and my only crit would be to look over figure drawing more since you're already fairly good with portraits. No point in playing to your strengths if your objective is improvement.

Cheers again for the SB post!

    Thanks for the advice!
here's a bunch of anatomy studies, focusing on legs. The faces got a bit distorted with my scanner.
And Adriana Lima, I took some time (close to 3 hours) to do a photostudy, focusing on skin and hair. Usually I don't soften or blend, but this time it turned out with an oil pastelly smudgy look. I dont' understand how some people achieve such great realism so fast with so few strokes.

Interesting rendering, you'd do well for some life drawing / posemaniacs / characterdesigns studies!

It's been a while and I've gotten a bit done. It's almost been a year since I started this thread, so hopefully there's been some improvement!

My tablet pen's buttons broke, and I lost the receipt/proof of purchase.

I believe the anatomy was done without references, so yay improvement, but of course I still see problems.
