There's the Art Academy of Cincinnati and the Columbus College of Art and Design and the Cleveland Institute of Art in Ohio. I go to the Art Academy and I don't recommend it for anyone interested in communication art, although it might be much much better three years from now as they are changing. The CCAD seems really good and I wish I'd gone there. You might not get along with Chris Payne's personality but he's really talented. I've heard that CCAD is insanely demanding but this came from two slackers. I know nothing about the Cleveland school.
i just came back from an open house at PCAD in PA....nice little small school....i think its a slight bit further from where you looking but just felt like throwing it out there for ya...
"The function of art is to stop us and take us out of our skin,
Unveiling the spirit's pure nakedness without beginning or end.
These dialogues of Maker and Seer weave together matter with soul,
Consecrating the practice of art as speech of the ineffable." ~ALEXgrey

Check out my school, Tyler School of Art, part of Temple University
Tyler School of Art
sadly, the site hardly does the school justice, but take a look at the curriculum track you're interested in, the instructors are outstanding.
located on the northern city limit of philadelphia, will move to main campus in the city 2007
when i think of western pa, i think of carnegie mellon U.
i think penn state main is known for its art program...
Hillartsympho, I'm a student at Community College of Phila. and I'm interested in transfering to Tyler. I want to study graphic design/illustration.
Can you give me your thoughts on the school. The school seems to be very "artsy" is realistic drawing taught?
Thanks
David
sorry it took me so long, David
yeah, if you want to study illustration here, youll have to major in graphic design and concentrate on illustration... just the way the program's set up... but youll be able to do some "interactive" (web) design and general graphic design here too.
Representational/ realistic drawing is encouraged, some teachers specialize in teaching the figure. youll be able to take drawing classes as electives outside your major. The drawing classes are sort of considered part of the painting/ sculpture dept. but are beneficial to anyone who takes them...
the teachers are generally outstanding!! The main Illustration teacher is David Noyes, alot of fun to work with and is basically a drawing teacher as well as illustration concept teacher. Some "realistic" teachers are susan moore and chuck schmidt. Moore is one of the best teachers ive had (out of many great ones) she teaches figure drawing, figure painting and... what im doing now.. figuremodeling (in clay)
from what i understand, the G.D. teachers are conceptually challenging... lots of crits!
Good luck, Hillary (sophomore, painting maj.)
Thanks a lot for the info Hillary, I was at the open house a couple weeks ago and was impressed with the work and by what a small school it is. It seems like a great place to study. The price is great too. I'm getting my portfolio ready and will be applying.
David
awesome! well tylers not too big, but not too small... thres actually something like 800-1000 grads and undergrads combined... but you still know everybody you see around.
good luck on your portfolio... see you when i come back from rome!(studying at temple rome this coming fall... sooo freakin' excited!)
oh yeah, and if you have any odd questions about portfolio preparation, feel free to ask!
Hillary, does Tyler have any open life drawing sessions?
Thanks,
David
yes, its either tuesday and wednesday or wednesday and thursday (Wed for sure) from 6:30 to 9:00, 2nd floor tyler hall, up the stairs and to the right. i think an instructor from MICA conducts it.
tyler may or may not continue the open modeling sessions at the end of the semester (2 weeks) until fall, a good place to try to do it over the summer would be the academy, www.pafa.org ; also have you ever heard of the philadelphia sketch club? its a historical society where artists trained to illustrate the newspapers before photography was invented. still around today... http://www.sketchclub.org/
you can also give Fleischer Art Memorial a gander, they're on Catherine and 7th, couple blocks south of South Street.
there's also the University City Art League, somewhere around 42 & Walnut I think. they have life drawing, but I don't know if what their instruction level is.
is the tyler life drawing open to all? maybe I can swing by and draw?
we have open life drawing Thr 6-9:45. I'm sure Martone would love new people coming by. the current quarter ends june 19th. we get a couple weeks break. then its summer quarter and open drawing starts up again until sometime in September.
If you want to drop by, shoot me an email and lemme know.
