Dragan Bibin - Serbian Mythology and Folktales - UPDATE (Jun 30th, 2012)

    ***UPDATE (Jun 30th, 2012) ***

    EAGLE EMPEROR

This illustration is also done for the book "Serbian Folktales".

Eagle Emperor (oil on linen/digital, 12x16")

    ***UPDATE (November 7th, 2011) ***

SERBIAN MYTHOLOGY - REBBELS (WITCHES AND VAMPIRES)

I have recently finished illustrations for the third, and final, book on Serbian Mythology named "Rebels", dedicated to vampires and witches.

    VID THE VAMPIRE

I did this painting in oils on linen.

    PREFACE - VAMPIRES AND WITCHES

This illustration is meant to play on our fear of dark holes, of caves, tunnels, darkness itself. Absence of presence makes suggested presence more powerful.

I painted this in oils on half-chalk ground on linen glued to a panel, size 9x13″.

    Hope you like it!

    Wow these are really clever!
The Omaja parition worked really well on my second try! In fact it worked so well I am not sure if what I saw was intended, because it was just too perfect!

As for the plague I don't think anything is going on optical-wise, but I do love that painting a lot.

Really clever stuff, gotta love it!

Please can you tell about how you did the "CUMA (Plague)"s gaze?

I mean, it really works - I can't focus on it and have headache. Was it just an accident/experiment you developed or you have some knowledge about er.. optics/ optical illusions or such and how we see things? Had you a direct inspiration/ have you seen something similiar in art somewhere? (sorry for english, i hope you know what I mean).

(I am not sure if it has an actuall use for an illustration to make people stop looking at it even if it's part of the concept, but still it's very interesting)

Mydrim - Optical illusion on Cuma was inspired by old chinesee print, from year 1685. (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cangjie2.jpg)
Double eyes are confusing, and hard to watch, so we are naturaly drawn to the mouth, but in this case I painted them double too.
I intended to make viewer slightly sick, beacuse Cuma is a demon of sickness and disease afterall.
I have other paintings of Cuma, with much stronger illusion, but I think that subtle version is safer

My intention is to make illustration alive, and functioning in real life, not only on paper.

Pavel Sokov - Thank you very much. Looking at Cumas face should make your vision slightly blurred.

Very nice work, these really strike a chord with me. I find your restraint and economy very exciting and refreshing, you aren't afraid of subtlety. You've inspired me to get out the oil paints and paint something I think, so thanks a lot.

WOW, thanks for posting here. Its hard to come across this haunting work. Its like you write poetry and sonnets with your paintings.
For me, as an artist who tries to capture whats of immense concern to me, a thing like this is pure beauty, since it seems that you are somehow able to express well and poetically what you want to express.
    Its moving!!

    Much love,
    Bhanu.

    Please keep posting

This is very interesting. I know about the book ”Banned Demons” from a friend of yours (well I suppose she is ...) This is quality stuff, I'll be around. Best luck.
