"Eel Walker" bronze

I haven't posted here in quite awhile so I thought I'd do so today.
This is my latest personal "fine Art" sculpture I had cast in bronze.
She stands 19" tall by 28" long.
I submitted this to the latest Spectrum 17 fantasical art book and just found out that I got the Gold award in the Dimensional category.
Needless to say I was completely surprised by the news and very excited.

That is so unbelievably amazing. A fresh design, and executed very well. How did you go about casting it in bronze and colouring it?

I brought the original clay sculpture to Artworks foundry in Berkeley, CA.
There they mold it, cast a wax copy, then mold the wax in a ceramic shell called a waste mold.
Then they burn out the wax in a kiln. Then they pour the molten bronze into the hollow shell. When it's cooled they sand blast the ceramic shell away leaving the raw bronze casting. They clean up the casting, called "chasing".
Welding and grinding it back to it's original state. The Patina ( Coloring ) is applied with pigments and chemicals and torching it to fuse it to the sculpture.
It's then cooled and sealed with wax.
If you want another one they repeat the process from casting another wax, waste mold .......
That's one reason bronze sculptures are so expensive.

This piece is amazingly beautiful, thanks so much for posting. I'd like to one day create some work for bronzing, can you give me an indication of cost? Is it calculated by the complexity of the piece or volume?

Also, it seems bronzing involves a lot of hands-on work from other people, separating your sculpture into pieces that putting it back together, how do you find someone you trust not to ruin or compromise your work?

Again love the subject and execution, its beautiful.

I'm so glad this is being well received. I can't wait to dig into some new ideas I've got sort of along these lines. Although it's harder and harder to find the time to work on my own stuff these days.... not that I'm complaining.

Mark I love your stuff! I was wondering if you ever finished the gymnastic pieces you were working on? I believe it was of a man working the rings? Would love to see more of it! The gymnast is cast in bronze and at the foundry right now. This is the raw casting without the patina. I'm finishing up the last of 4 different sports figures to be installed in one of the Arriaga Sports facilities on the Stanford campus.

Wow! amazing work, every bit rings true. Oh and nothing looks like bronze eh This also has to have one of the best Patina finishes I have seen in so long. Some times a piece just makes you yearn very badly to own it this is one of those.

I have actually seen this as a clay sculpt on a sculpture forum last year and was blown away. This is easily one of the best sculpts I've seen in the past few years- the concept and execution are incredible. Congrats on your award- I'm glad to see that such a worthy piece received the honor.

These people are very good at Artwork foundry. I trust they're work.

This piece cost me $2,800 to have one cast and patina. With a one time mold fee of $2,300. So it ain't cheap. It would probably be cheaper if it were a less dynamic and simpler design and size.

It's worth it, and if anything I've seen deserves to be bronzed it's this piece. (My lady friend who loves sea animals is quite enamored with this piece by the way.)

Or shall I say Master dude!! Or super master sculptor dude! I am sooooooooooo in awe of your sculpture work my friend, they are simply beautiful and flawless. The lady and the eel sculpture is masterful and you deserve to have the gold award.. Man I bet that was such a proud moment to find out that you have achieved such greatness.. you talented git!
