heylo people,

just thought i'd share with yall some of my works. they're all playmobil bases, re-imagined into my own slightly twisted characters. Entitled "a curious panorama of corporate utopia", a bunch of these were done up for a local arts show back in jan.

sculpted with epoxy putty and painted with acrylics, crits are welcome. more pics are on my site, so do check'em out.

this 1 was based on Ashley Wood's World War Robot, Nom de Plume. really liked the post-apocalyptic vibe so i decided to do him up playmobil style

I love these. I wish the paint was just a little less shiny, or maybe its just the lighting when you take the photo. Tis a minor thing, because I think these are just great...

If you don't mind, I would like to share the link to this thread on a toy collecting forum I frequent... www.toymania.com. There are some Playmobil fans over there that will get a real kick out of this.

thanks for the kind words, appreciate it! i do agree that the figures turned out a little shiny. i usually use a matte sealant after painting and might have overdone it on these guys.

i frequent toymania every now and again although i wasn't aware there was a playmobil fan base. i don't mind at all; feel free to post my stuff there!

Oh yeah, Mr. Stinkhead (of MillionDollarPlayboy.com, I think) is a huge fan and posts tons of reviews for Playmobil on toymania.com which always go over really well.

Are you famillar with Xevoz? Short-lived Hasbro building action figure line from 2004 that released about 30 figures before it was cancelled. Loosely based on Stikfas, but larger and better made. Stylization generic in a sort of Playmobil way with the same plastic quality, but better articulated and fully interchangable ball and socket joints. If you don't have any, I think you'd really love them both for play factor and customizablity. Xevoz was sort of like the best of Playmobil combined with the best of Legos in a real action figure line that was better than Bionicle (IMHO). So sad that the line died, but the marketing was horrible. Really deserved to be a multi-decade, transgenerational toy line like Playmobil and Lego too.

i've heard abt Xevoz but i nvr really got around to collecting the line. i did appreciate the stylized look they had and i liked the fact that each 1 was uniquely sculpted but remained generic in its form. i collected Stikfas tho. the mecha robot is 1 of my favourites!

was looking through my playmo fodder and came across this fella.
a bit of epoxy and acrylics and this is what i came up with.
a little rough on the edges (man its hard to paint at this size!) although i think it blends in well with the rest of my work

But where is that texture coming from?

If you're airbushing the basecoat it might be worth thinning you paint a little?

the texture comes from drybrushing. it does give the pieces a slightly rougher finish and i will perhaps futher thin down the paint next time round.

I guess he meant the "rough" surface itself, probably caused by the primer, but I really like that - I'm glad you didnt sand them down to ultragloss.

Yes, the gritty grainy surface texture. Yeah - it looks alright and I'm as glad as Kilh that you didn't go for flat colours gloss ("toy soldier" a-la original playmobil).

If you thinned your airbrush paint, or went in a tad heavier/closer with the spray can, then a slightly wetter 'dry'-brush you could get a much smoother finish.

It's a tough one, because these have a consistent "look" that is pretty good - and the fact it is consistent makes the set, but I can't help but think that a smoother paintjob (Layered rather than dry-brushed - maybe try a bit of wet-blending on the model) could really take these to the next level. But... like I say, it's a tough one. Could be interesting though

personally i do prefer the slightly rough and textured finish as i like the gritty appearence that it gives. i currently don't own an airbrush so all the paints go on the medium using regular bristle brushes. i am very keen though to experiment on an airbrush as i am curious about the versitility of the tool. i will definitely try a lil more wet-blending for my next piece and see how that turns out. thanks again for the constructive comments, will be sure to take them into consideration!

up next is a custom piece i did for Tenacious Toy's Who's Da Bomb?! custom art show.

Base materials are a Toy2R mini bomb and a playmobil farm animal. The mini bomb was sanded down (the ridiculous looking cigarette was ripped off), rivets and other details like cracks and dings were sculpted on. A saddle to house the mini bomb was sculpted onto the playmobil. and the tiny guns and such were random parts found in my parts box.

these guys stand 3 inches short.

this next piece was a contribution artwork to a local arts festival in Singapore entitled "Content: navigating a point". Each head was sculpted and painted and the final piece was exhibited as digital prints of each individual head.

Absolutely love the customised play people (playmobil) - great ideas, these were some of my favourite early toys before Action Man came along of course. But I have to say (in my poshest, most self righteous, british accent) Sir - are you mad!!!??? Did I just see you customise an orginal classic Star Wars figure????? Blasphemy!!! Total blasphemy!! You'd be burnt at the stake if Star Wars was the state religion. Just don't let me catch you eyeing up any classic action man dolls or there will be hell to pay!!!!!

Joking aside, great custom jobs, but I think someone else already said it, the paint jobs are a little too glossy looking. Fits in with the nature of the toy i guess but, a matt finish would look nicer. Keep em coming.
