Shark!!!!

Started off wanting to paint the head of a great white shark, their profile is very tricky to get right other wise they look like they are smiling, composition is a bit flat so I tilted it and added the diver for some drama...

It's a mixture of PS and Painter, Going to do some more shark diver stuff so I'll go for a better composition next time...

Would love to know your thoughts...

Love the colors, used very effectively. The textures are also very nice. I might want to tweek the position of the leg a little, and some blood in the water would look fantastic.

I have a great phobia for sharks, and i can barely watch this, which probebly in this case is a good thing, in some strange way i kinda love it.

Duman cheers buddy, I think when I heighten the canvas I'll be able to sort out his legs... I did try one where his right leg was in it's mouth with a cloud of blood, but it was too much, I preferred the drama of a near miss or struggle, like the story isn't over yet... but I may have to satisfy some blood lust in another one.....

I just thought that some really vibrant red could look really interesting in this piece. Anyway, kudos on a realistic looking shark.

I'm impressed, it really has a cinematic feel to it! My only crit is not about the drawing itself: I don't know but if a shark just comes like this, wouldn't you scream regardless if you're underwater and thus relesease that thing you put in your mouth when you dive? I think it would add drama.

Nice work so far - your hues for the shark and the diver are very similar so you could adjust one or the other to show a differant skintone. Maybe think about depth too, the deeper you are in the sea the more colour fades, red fades quite quickly, like after 6 feet or something. This effects the tone of the skin which come across well on the diver but would that blob of browny orange be there? If you are quite deep all red turns black, including blood.
Why are bubbles coming from the sharks mouth? They breath through there gills unless this one jumped out the water and is dive bombing the dude.
Keep in mind the mouth is pretty much the scary part of the shark (and eyes but those you nailed) so putting more emphasis on it could help heighten the tension. Is the shark attacking the guy cos its mouth would surely be open to bite?
Sorry for nit - picking know a bit about diving and sharks (from surfing too actually, seen a couple while surfing)

i like the cool colors, really brings out the 'cold killer' sense of the shark. as it has bee mentioned before, the height of canvas should be raised so the compo will looked better. anyway, this is a very good piece.

This is friggen sick. I have a simultaneous fascination and fear of sharks. They are one of my favorite subjects. If you do heighten the canvas I wouldnt do it too much. The claustrophobia of the whole piece is what makes it for me. Very convincing drama. I do agree with Duman that a little bit of red might be cool. Not necessarily any explicit on-canvas violence just a red wash over the bottom center or something like that. Might be something to toy around with. Really great work though man. I would sincerely appreciate any pointers you could offer me. Keep it up.

I really enjoy how this turned out!

It'd be good to know how long you've spent, it's clear it's a great composition for the amount of time that was given. A few things to work on, like taking the base colors from one level to the next while thinking of touching up the small details like the blue outline in front of the shark's nose. It's a bit undefined what's going on there, but I think you may have been going for the shark pushing away the water. Which can be obtained with possibly some more bubbles or color variation of the water (darker blues vs. lighter blues).

A particular thing that seems well done was the entire shark body - that was covered well, fast. An issue is toward the back of the shark - it's a bit hard to make out what it is on the side of its body. Is it a birth mark? Scar? Some marking (paint) left to track it? Perhaps it's just the texture of the shark, but looking at the texture closer to the front of its nose, it seems just a bit splotchy. A bit more balance of teal color here and there would make it blend in better. It makes sense, but the current color sort of makes it out of place.

You can see the parts where I circled in with magenta about things that are going very well but could be slightly improved on (teeth, hand w/ thumb, vest, etc.) I particularly like how the air tube was shaped, could be a bit thicker and wrap around the guys head rather than his arm.
