    JVGig's Sketchbook

This is my first sketchbook. I am a senior in high school and am considering studying art in college along with engineering, but definitely need some work first. The images are all in order , so hopefully there will be some improvement.

I think that says it all, but I would greatly appreciate any advice, especially on the figures as I have had basically no training in that area.

    Thanks

Continuation of gestures. Tried some in ink. Is there anything consistently wrong with my figures that needs addressing?

This set came after the next set.

I seem to be struggling a bit more with male anatomy. What should I be doing to make them appear more masculine?

Some more. As you can see I am trying some faces, but they do not look totally realistic. Maybe they would look better if I did some with charcoal so shading becomes more of a possibility...

How are my proportions? I am having some trouble with foreshortening, any tips?

good works man. one thing i can suggest that would really help your paintings is to watch your tones. painting is all about light, and until you can nail that nothing will seem quite right. but aside from that i like your exploration and I absolutely love the crying girl close to the top. gorgeous.

keep up the figure studies, those are really going to help out alot. Also be conscience of line weight, block out your figures lighter and then when you feel good about the proportions then go back and put down your final lines, also try and keep your lines as fluid and direct as possible, keep drawing as much as possible, you're on the right path.

    Thanks for the comments.

I have been mainly concerned with proportions and basic figure speed. I feel that my proportions are much more consistent and that can distinguish between male and female better than I could two weeks ago when did my first full figure. The time per figure has gone from 30min down to less than 5. I am now starting some more detailed muscle and skeletal studies, but I felt that it would just be frustrating trying to fit muscles together if the basic proportions were incorrect.

Thanks for the link, I will check it out.

hey good efforts you are making!
as for the paintign of the trees in the first post,
i think you handled the brush well i like the impressionistic feel of it.
But you should keep an eye on composition, i think the trees take up too much space on the page. leave some room around them. put in the sky and maybe some foreground elements!
    keep it up!

My attempt at a more abstract style of painting. I am not fond of the results, but am not sure as to why. Should there be more contrast between adjacent colors? More saturated colors to help distinguish shapes or what?
