Cow one semester of art sketchbook

Hello. I'm pretty bad. I've probably drawn like 4 pictures in my whole life until I decided I wanted to be an artist and started taking some classes at my university. so far i've taken drawing 1 and design 1 at florida atlantic university, and i'm working my way through "color fundamentals" right now at the community college right across the street (which, for some reason has amazing teachers and much nicer classrooms than my university, wtf?)

so anyway, i've been lurking this site for while and it's always been an inspiration even though I can't really produce anything worthwhile

Everything so far has been just paper and pencil; I have a 6x8 graphire4 but I just can't make anything worthwhile with it yet, maybe i need some better brushes other than the standard round one but meh, that's another time.

I'll start this thread off chronologically from a few things in my sketchbook. Here's my chair:

and some random 30 second poses from that posemaniacs site:

and part of one of my fretless basses

that's all for now, i need to get to class. i'll leave you with a picture of a badass camel

Here's some more stuff I did in my drawing class, these are all like 16" x 24"

Vase with an aborted godzilla figurine (this is why you don't let students set up the still life.)

value study, drawing with an eraser on charcoal

looking down the hallway practicing perspective, then stepping on the paper while trying to take a picture of it

Yeah man, like the decision you made. Why not, just go do it. It doesn't matter how much you drew before as long as you work your ass off now, draw constantly. Post some more stuff and I'll come back with some crits. It's looking like a pretty good start so far...

At first I wouldn´t say your bad.
You just have to draw , draw and draw.
    And a litte critique:
Try to draw the hair with lines.
    I think its too angularly.

Wait for next pictures to look on your progress.

Thanks for the nice words guys, it gives me inspiration to keep at it. I've always felt like drawing, but I'd sit down and be unable to produce anything that was vaguely recognizable, so I'd just give up and do something else. Recently I've actually seen improvement, and I feel like I can just sit down and draw stuff now so that I can get better^^

    Here's some more:

Dragon from ref on google images...as I was googling I realized I wasn't going to find a picture of a real dragon to draw from, so I copied a portion of someone else's drawing. I'd give him credit but I can't find it again :/

elliot spitzer, lol. I actually drew this picture before I read the article - bad habit? :o

and, here's my first painting ever. it was for my color theory class a few weeks ago. we had to pick a portion of a "master's" painting, make 3 tiles and paint it in a particular color scheme for each tile. i picked dali's apparatus and hand and I thought it came out ok for my first painting. i got an A-

Here's the second painting I did for my class, it's supposed to be about our school trip to england and be somewhat representational with a flag, or big ben and whatnot. I'm happy with the flag, and even happier that it didn't take much time at all to do..but the big ben I was unable to get to look good; i probably spent about 3 hours painting over it over and over getting colors that i liked, then just painted it gray. I think I might crop it out. The bottom part was post photoshop, clone stamping and messing around with little things on it, but meh

and here's a flower-ish thing on a tree i drew from imagination, i picked up a package of those bic pens that are like 40 for a dollar and I've been practicing some stuff with those to improve my line quality and my confidence with sketching stuff out since I can't erase it

and a self portrait from a mirror, i'm going through betty edwards' book and she told me to draw a self portrait so i was like ok

I think you are off to a great start, especially for someone who hasn't drawn a lot before!

I would suggest trying to do still life images and portraits as all shading, without using contour lines. You rely heavily on contour lines in your portraits and that just doesn't create a very natural look.

None of the ideas expressed above are actually mine. They are told to me by Luthor and Ferdinand, the five inch tall space aliens who live under my desk. In return for these ideas, I have given them permission to eat any dust bunnies they may find there.

here's today's sketch, went down to the park near my condo and picked a car to sit by and draw... i drew it in charcoal because i feel like I have an easier time concentrating on value since I can so easily draw very dark and and broad strokes (possibly too dark, i'm trying out some soft compressed charcoal and i feel like i'm barely able to touch it to the page and before it's too dark)

but nonetheless, i tried to focus more on value than the contour lines themselves like snake-woman suggested for a portrait. I actually started drawing then remembered what she said, which is why theres still quite a bit of contour :p

Hey sorry for the delay between posts! I ended up with an A in the color theory class and I'm taking figure drawing (drawing II) so I'll probably be uploading a lot more now

Here's today's main sketches, we did a LOT of gestures, so here's one gesture and some 20 minute sketches.
