"We watched our comrade's ship as she was swept off course by the storm, the waves dragging her towards a small island that wasn't on our map. We saw the great ship come to ground on the rocky shore, but fighting the storm ourselves, we couldn't yet follow and offer assistance to the stranded crew. The storm let up by morning and we set course for the island - where we found nothing of our comrade's ship. Not a single piece of wood nor sail washed up on the shore, not a man of her crew. There were odd footprints in the sand, but they seemed to lead back to the sea, rather than up coast inland. It was as if the ship and her crew had simply disappeared into the waters..."

By the year 3446, the planet Neptune had been terraformed.

Sort of.

Once millions of years worth of ice had melted, huge islands were released from the ice's clutches. The ground was self levitating, as the minerals in the ground contained polar opposite properties to the iron core of the planet.

At first, the islands would rise away from the planet, threatening to keep forever their prehistoric secrets in the depths of space. Large iron structures were built below the islands to offset the effects of the ground's properties. Later, cities were erected on each island. They were mounted below the islands to allow shorter digging times and to leave, undisturbed, the beauty of the alien plant and animal life on the top side.

The lower level of the city; a place where the working classes reside. The huts are the entrances to the homes, which are partially hollowed out of the rock. Because they're parents lack the means to buy transportation the kids get to school on the land below by skydiving...and hitch lifts back home from the various delivery ships bringing supplies to the island.

the sky palaces of the casino set were past their prime. The once hopping arenas of pleasure sagged tattered and torn on their sky hooks. as the next novelty playground came in to vogue...

The people who came bored of trying to explain tose who smoke the dangers of that path for themselves and the others, take this idea of live with pure air, the first city as made for the people called " los locos", who ate the smoke and polution.

This cities with the time become popular, and the idea of fresh air purified with the water and the ecologic machhinery make a good place to live and grow families.

The becoming of this mode of life is growing and taking more popularity, leaving the olds cities to the smokers, and making more place to live in the earth, because the ocean have more space than solid earth.

The superior part of this cities is called the " Eden Garden", there the people grow and breed animals and vegetables.

The inhabitants of the Travelling Island have an ancient rite of dumping some of their people to the water with their legs tied up (with a rock attached if that's not enough) as sacrifice to the sea. They also tell tales of their offered townsmen appearing as ghosts in the water to arouse regret of this terrible habit.

What they don't know is that those sacrificed are sometimes pardoned by the sea but they lose their ability to speak along with lungs, and their human legs are replaced with a tail functional underwater. Along the centuries, these creatures have built their own city on the opposite side of their home island, in the hope of getting communication with the people they once knew.

Was really torn between Hideyoshi (the atmosphere is wonderfull), Dan (awsome colours and I'm in aw of the render), and Zutaiola (who I went for in the end....I actually feel like it's somewhere that could exist...the colours you've used and the render makes if breath-my only crit is the typography you used, kind of detracts from the image IMO-not glaringley but enough to niggle). Also have to give a mention to Kiriko...beatiful atmosphere, might have been nice to make it more 3 dimentional though....mabe with more layers of trees at the top....really dig the style!. Sorry I dont have time to crit em all....but its 3am and I gots to get my ass outta bed early tommorow.

My choice was chaosrocks, for the idea itself. Brilliant, raw and unique.

Zutaiola, kiriko and corrick would have been my parallel choices for not only idea but execution in those amazing pieces, with me leaning more toward Zutaiola's. Amazing composition, scale, technique, and overall believability. I went with the one I felt was most unconventional, even if I don't often see floating upside down cities swinging from islands (or do I?).

If I could hang any of the entries on my wall, I would not hesitate or waste any time in hanging them all.

In truth, I would have been happier to have a "they're all excellent" option in the poll...

... perhaps the ability to vote for more than one at the time could have been better for me, say, with a limit of "top five"...

Up until this week I have included anything that looked even vaguely finished. BUt I have been announcing all along that this would not continue. It is not discrimination. Evey one that I accepted this week said final. (or finished, or done) I do not pick and choose I apply the rules equally to all. If you actaully read the threads, I have been naggin about it in CAPs all week. Please don't take this personally . Its just that I got tired of picking up after so many people and guessing whether it was done only to be scolded for taking unfinished work to poll or leaving off work that the artist thought was finished. I Made a simple guideline, Im following it.. I think I am not over stepping my bounds to ask for this one small thing in order to expedite the job... that I do with out renumeration of any kind in my own personal none-to abundant free time.
IN otherwords ITS NOT DESCRIMINATION! y'all come back now y'hear?

Kiriko - This concept reminds me of a Japanese anime environment on paprus. Solid interpretation, though the key element to it's imaginative quality is absent. Something seems missing.

McFilms - The effort was effervescent through the spirit of an accurate topical approach. I'm looking forward to watching you improve with every EOW.

Davenale - Definite cartoon series possibility. Is this the skydiving edition of the Powerpuff Boys? If so, this is an image to be reckoned with and a product of playful intercrossing.

Chaosrocks - The hanging palisades of the quagmire jester. Like the EOW itself, it clings onto you, the artist, for it's place in the gravitational field. The architectural lines could be sharpened or covered in a species of skymoss - mist can also be a possibility. As is, it's a fern on a grapevine.

HFix - The darker backround with the tree and the faint outline of the greenery is the best display of environment so far. The problem is that the colors aren't contrasting with one another to formulate mutuality in the spectrum. The idea flourishes, but it's too dark to be visionary.

Vict0r - Hideyoshi's entry could be a close-up into the underbelly of the mechanized paradise. This a decent entry - as a suggestion, you could paint layers of blue over the top ice barrier and allow sunlight to reflect onto the city. Plant life could be blooming at the edges of the foremost skyscrapers.

Corrick - You should have illustrated the cover for "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea." A world was created, seen by the simplicity of a creature heading towards it. The tendon tentacular support vines seem like the limbs of a gargantuan squid reaching out for the electricity. I think you should continue to engorge in this storyline - it could lead to a larger system of environmental illustration. It's been awhile since I've seen your art, and the improvement is as luminous as the blue waters.

Doobu - The yellow landscape is an excellent choice of hue for this entry. A Dr. Seuss influenced cliff, the meadows of mustard, and the population underneath - or is it?

Hideyoshi - Science fiction art at it's elite form, once again. You have the ability - the aquatic metropolis. A city underwater, greenhouses in the lower channels. The only thing to improve could be the underwater propellant vessels - the shape and color resemble the magic school bus from a children's book series. This will be the first time I've used this word in an art commentary - magnificence. Have you heard from nuclearbavaria?

Gaius - Excellent interpretation - a suggestion could be to add more fishermen to the scene. Viewing the alien mothership over the railings and onto the mast.

[DAN] - The last industrial outpost, built where they can't find it. Fish believe it to be home. A glowing globular mass to inhabit and view the waters at a gathering point to avoid predatorial advancement. This is another powerful image from you.

Smuli - The placement of the whale and the mermaid too orderly - they could be whirling into one another like two dolphins in a tornado-like movement. That could represent the symmetry of the connection between humanity and other species. Well done on the effort.

AjTRON - This has a similar perspective to a few other entries with a different version of the journey. The journey underwater. I like the believable structure of your citadels and the shadowy heathens that drape down beneath them. Steel with vegetation foliage, however you pronounce that.

Zutaiola - This is in the Top 3 of the entries this round. It's an epic viewpoint - one suggestion would be to remove the hotdog shaped blimp at the left in the sky. I don't think it's needed.

damn difficult 2 give a vote - you all did well. can't descide whether to vote for AjTron, Hydeyoshi or Kiriko.

Kiriko: i like the very clean style and the monochrome way of coloring. it is very well understand- / readable.

Hydeyoshi: great sense of mood, coloring, atmosphere - the whole package... i like the depth of that pic and the idea of a city using the watersurface as the groundbase...

AjTron: will get my vote i think. i like the way you use different materials (fotos of skyscrapers) even if they are used more than once. it makes tha picture look very fast made. it get's more structure though. naaach - i love that lose transparency quick brush structure... and of corse the mood and depth of that view.

Fantastic round. Seriously, one of the best I've seen.

Now to the crits:

Kiriko, again, the linework here is stellar and deserves its own accolade. Compositionally the image is well done, but the ships on the underside of the island need a little more definition. The ship crushed against the shore however is lovely. The trees are the only thing that really throw me, they either need to be further detailed, or just silhouettes.

McFilms, the island detail and complexity of the mechanical city underneath are very good, and you've managed to give a grand scale and weight to the landmass. However, the overall image seems a bit flat. It may be because we're seeing a flat island edge on, but it loses something in depth. Also, there's that tangent between island and ocean, which is a pet peeve of mine. The tips of the structures barely touching the water are somewhat distracting, easily fixed if this were a layer. I'd also recommend adding more detail to the waves and a hint of a reflection (use photo ref!), to anchor the island in the composition, give us a sense that it inhabits the space.

daveneale, I love the style of the image, how playful it is. I'd be terrified to live in this city, you've managed to instill it with a dizzying sense of height.

chaosrocks, The impression of age is represented well here, with the structures withering away even as they cling to their anchor. I'm beginning to admire your architectural tastes too. My only gripe would be not seeing more of the island it's attached to.

Hfix, the flatness and abundance of "texture" in the image makes it hard to discern depth. While I love the ambiance and colors, the depth is underdeveloped and there is a lack of identifying detail in the islands.

vict0r, I loved the progression of this, from sketch to study to finish. The sketch alone is good enough to stand by itself. The architecture here is impressive, with an amazing amount of detail crammed into a small space... which may also contribute to it being a little confusing. The structures are interesting enough to deserve more definition and separation from one another.

doobu, near-perfect execution of the topic, with the island given its own propulsion system to boot. Can't really critique it, except maybe to say your values get a little flat on the grassy areas of the foreground island... but that's nitpicking. Well done!

hideyoshi, as always, an amazing contribution to an EOW. To nitpick, I'll echo Vulgar' in that the submersibles seem more like jellyfish, or an afterthought. Still, this leaves me feeling as if I were actually upside down, and the atmospheric elements (light, flotsam in the water, etc.) are spot on.

gaius, at first I was wondering why you'd painted a Borg cube floating in the water, which in and of itself is pretty cool. I then noticed the mountains on top of the cube, and realized it was an island bobbing in the water... which is my only comment really, that the "island" part could have been further realized. Still, it's an incredibly energetic piece, and I'm very impressed with the execution.

[DAN], this was by far one of the best entries here. Your combining delicate structures within a foreboding and alien shell is nothing short of beautiful. My only critique is one of personal style really, the sharpening is a little distracting. It tends to pixelate some areas, and I'd love to see it before the effect.

smuli, this image almost seems like a perfect gradation, top to bottom, of stages of completion. The top of the island is very rough, less so in the middle with a little more texture, and a well developed city structure at the bottom. While this may have been intentional, it still leaves me wanting more detail on the island itself. Still, the handling of the architecture and the rendering of detail is very nice, with the illuminated windows being some of the finer points of detail here.

AjTron, this was a pleasant surprise. While I usually stay away from illustrations that use "shapes" vaguely to represent structure, you've managed to pull them together so they give meaning and form to the composition. Your channeling John Berkey through the submersibles secured my vote, but the illustration overall is breathtaking.

Zutaiola, aside from this being very well thought out and rendered, I have two critiques. One, that it is too small. The detail suggested in the image leaves me wanting to see more! Second, the aircraft in the image seem somewhat superfluous, more so in the blimps than in the jet craft. Epic!

Hi everyone! First of all thanks to Hfix , this threads are very important for me.
Second, thank you very much to all those who has left commets, reviews or critics ( I'm not sure wich word is appropriate here) and supports. It helps a lot, you know guys.

I'm not fast enough writing english to comment all of your images as they deserve to be commented but i'm sure i'll do soon if I have the chance. I'm agree with Corrick, although I'm quite new in CA I'm Impressed of this round. I hope you'll be so lucky as the amouth of talent that I've seen here.

Voted for DAN, just because I think he espended more time finishing than the rest, also I love the composition itself. Looks like a movie frame!
