thanks again loolarge, and thanks sealegs. i'm trying to take all the advice people can give me!
alright i think i'm done working on this for today, that's why i'm posting it now. i really need a better background. that white is killing my eyes. the rest of my practicing today will be in pencil. going from wacom to pencil is such a relieving shift, but i guess that's cause i'm just not used to the wacom yet.

so bad news... i was always at school for philosophy but always kept art in mind and was considering transferring all freshman year and beyond... now after visiting both pafa and uarts (pafa was so far superior and i loved it!) my parents don't want me attending either. so i guess i'm not transferring. there are other art schools, i know, but i didn't want to leave my school that badly to begin with and only really have friends in philly. art has been shot down to a hobby ...... or has it? i'll find out i guess.

some attempts at painting in color, man i SUCK at it, the colors are so bland and there is no contrast and i even desperately attempting a shoddy photoshop fix to the first one... i tried matching the colors directly from the photoref but i'll be more liberal next time. i'm gonna do studies from life and read on it as well. the pages are from the car ride home, awkward poorly shaded figure and doodles.

so a combination of finally deciding art school is not in my immediate future, taking a week trip to west virginia to help rebuild homes with my church, and just being a lazy bum in the sun smoking cigarettes and drinking tea have caused me not to draw for a damn long time, and it's hard to get back the patience i only now realize i had acquired. now i look at stuff and i'm like f8ck i have to draw that?? oh well. i'll keep on going. hope to start improving again soon.

i also tried a little still life painting with photoshop. color's a bitch. i can't wait to actually get a handle on it

Ok, I still don't have anything new to post because my scanner hasn't been hooked up or with me for about 3 months, but I was looking through here and started really missing posting so I thought I'd leave a little blurb anyway. I'll try and see if there's anything worth posting of mine...
...well here's a quick portrait study from almost exactly 2 years ago... one of the best things I did back then. Hope I've gotten better.

some studies... it seems all i do is studies because i hate the work i do out of my head. anyone have any advice for me? i feel like i'm learning the face and figure at a good pace, my imagination drawings are improving but they are certainly way less than what i want them to be.

Keep taking what you give to these forums, you're doing great. Have a good new year. Give more priority to the work you do out of your head in the lines, more than the values and shading. The studies you do are building foundation there. When you take your imaginated (lol) work to a finished level with color or grayscale, it'll be worthwhile.

Man, you're talented enough that you can make it without art school but I must say it's rather strange seeing someone of your skill have this on/off affair with art. Love your rendering, love your ballet figures, beautiful work. Follow your bliss my friend!

matsign: thanks, i realize i don't really think through the work i do from my head, i'll try to work straight through to a finished piece tomorrow, and post it no matter how shitty (it'll work my skills in the right direction anyway, right?)

eon: i'm flattered, and if i want to "make it" drawing (though it's just a hobby at this point, albeit a passion), like you said, i have to stop this on/off thing i've got going. i've been drawing or painting daily since i started these updates, and unless i meet a girl or something (hate to be so weak but that always throws any diligence i have out the window) i plan to continue that way. plz god no girls D: my art is more important

here's a little sandbox pad i started in photoshop while i was reading a bridgman book. i'm far too tired to continue it right now but i hope to do a fully rendered figure from photoref in ps tomorrow.

Cool, I remember that page haha. With the imagination thing, take your time on it man. Elwell ( ) will remind you that to consider when, where, how, who, why. Give whatever your drawing a story in your head. Don't start shading until all the lines are down.

Your renders kick major ass, so I think you have the patience. Yeah and girls are only good ar distracting you. Love is fleeting, knowledge is forever! haha.

alright, started off with bridgman studies which, even though my figures are looking WAY TOO MUCH like his now i think that's a very good start on getting the form down from my head alone. every drawing on every page, except for the first one, is from my imagination.

matsign, i followed through and made a fairly finished thing out of my imagination, i scanned both the line drawing and the rendered thing and cropped it.
when, where, how, who, why? those will be explained in my up coming metal gear solid 3 slash fic

then i started a little photoref study in wacom of some guy laying on a bed but i cut out the bed. i've had enough male bodies for now though, i think i'm gonna work on something else tomorrow

thanks again mat, i think your advice helped a lot.

    cool stuff here!
indeed studies are very important, i must have over a hundred papers around with that kind of things, well most of them 10 years old, but it works, when i now start a creation, it helps a lot to have done these steps before...
    keep it up!

Lege1: thanks, and i saw your massive graffiti dump, really awesome stuff, i like to do drunken stenciling here and there but you have real skills with a can. i'll leave a comment at your sb sometime

JFierce: heh yeah i had to get out of my block figure stage sometime... still trying to make them what i want (ultra real and stuff)

Ignominious: thanks for the , haha it's encouraging.

not much of an update, did more bridgman stuff and tried to make a figure out of my head and paint it on wacom. it's all muddy and the anatomy is weird but i'm just gonna keep trying. i'll dump what's been going on in my physical sketchbook soon, i just don't think any of it is quite worth scanning yet.

Please dump from the physical sketchbook. I'm sure most around here would agree it's worth it. As for the girls...

Draw them! They love it. Plus you get to learn anatomy... Great way to meet up with girls at random places too. I carry a small sketchpad in my back pocket for that very reason. Try it, with your portrait ability you''ll have fun with it.

Thanks for stopping by my sketchbook I realised I hadn't checked out yours yet. Those anatomy studies look great, and just remind me once more to do those studies myself as well. Bridgmans books seem to be a good buy.

Dude, your from philly? Thats cool, I haven't really seen too many people around here from that area.

Your stuff is great, I like that guy with the metal gear solid helmet (Can't remember which boss that was?) It's good to see you drawing so much.

I'm in a similar position to where you were a few months ago. I'm trying to decide if I want to go to school for engineering or art...and my parents are of course pushing for engineering, while I'm kinda leaning the other way.

Keep up your drawing, whether it stays as only a hobby, or you decide to push it further.
