    not safe for work #99577

i started one of these a while back, but i ended up never updating cause my interest in drawing waned as i went to college for something else. now i'm trying to focus on drawing this summer now that school's out. hope to get somewhere with this...
here are some figure drawings from a couple weeks ago to start off. i'll make a big dump sometime soon and then update daily from there probably. hope some experts can tear it apart :D

/edit gotta use a better thumbnail

scanned some pages in my free time, not up to date though.
i'm always stopping myself from actually designing something or finishing a drawing cause i'm not confident and don't want it to suck... guess i should go ahead and try though.

some very nice studies, I'm curious, are you using photoshop with that last study? Your figures are very dynamic and lively... Keep posting...

yeah... i don't know much about painting in ps, i'm just trying to get a feel for it. i've already got a few handy shorcut buttons worked out--i never knew capslock made the cursor a crosshair, but i'm glad i do now :D

this is pretty much up to date, as these 8 pages are from the last few days. figure drawings will come tomorrow! i left a bunch of useless stuff out, even though what's there is pretty useless anyway cause it's only for practice :/ i'll get around to actually making art eventually.

    thanks for the post.

i gotta say, the way you're capable of viewing the subject matter in 3 dimentions astonishes me. your values are pro and so's your linework. i'm totally jelous haha.

ped454: thanks for taking a look, and thanks for the extremely flattering response... but don't be jealous! i think what has helped me more than anything in trying to acquire a 3d eye for things is the warmup i do every day: i do a couple sketches of some perspective heavy scenes (corner of a room, kitchen cabinets) before i start drawing. perhaps that's it?

anyway, some more pages before i leave tonight. more hogarth studies, some shiny buddha miniature, and a couple invented figures. i'm gonna start working on environments and more wacom stuff soon. i hope to get some crits!

a small update for how long it's been... i've been sketching every day but most of the time it's just useless crap. there are some actual studies on these couple pages, so i only scanned these... i've also been working on anatomy on large manila sheets, so maybe if i can find a camera i'll upload those too. i'll get around to actually designing things soon, i swear...
i wish my scanner wasn't a piece of shit

There's plenty of good gesture sketches. I think you should concentrate now on some longer, more polished figure drawings and anatomy studies.

thanks for the reply, i'm trying! the poses where i go to figure drawing last no more than 20 minutes, and there are only 2 or so 20 minute ones. i wish i had a class for longer poses... but maybe i should just use a picture ref? i prefer life but beggars can't be choosers, i guess

here are some anatomy studies after robert beverly hale. i don't really intend to keep these, the learning is more in the process than the notes i'm keeping

Really loving the anatomy sketches, and ofcourse the Buddah

Maybe try to make a creature/figure/robot or something out of your imagination, experiment a little more I would say.

Keep it coming man, I will be waiting.

    Thanks for dropping by!

    lovely studies...
kinda drooling after a more finished piece.
and yes, what DeJakhalz said, experimenting a bit wouldn't hurt.

    keep sharing...

thanks everyone who posted! a few doodles in my sketchbook for today, maybe tomorrow i'll photograph my anatomy study manilas to post again. trying to get out of studies and into using my imagination only. it's quite a shock... it's a different thinking process when there's nothing to look at but your page

first foray into color in this sketchbook comes in the form of a crappy paint over done out of boredom... a new facet of art emerges about which i know close to nothing! these pages were straight out of my head except for the mask thing that i never finished... it's so different drawing this way... difficult ><

15 mins before work, just felt like trying it, i know it doesn't really look like anything. and i got the bend of the forearm wrong on the big one.. that slight bend should probably be going the other way, cause of the way the bones go

Wow, great figure studies. You've got a good eye for light and form. I think that the best thing for you is George Bridgeman. I guarantee reading and copying the pages of his books will make your forms much for fluid. In my opinion, they are a godsend for artists. Anyways, thanks for popping by my sb, cheers!

goog: thanks for the advice, i actually have two bridgman books (they're so cheap i couldn't resist) but didn't find much use for them at first. his illustrations were too vague for me to learn anatomy from right off the bat. however, now that i've got some basic knowledge of it, i'm seeing the forms in his work a lot easier, and the exaggerated fluidity in his figures is certainly something i want to learn from! i did a few studies from him in this update

hurri: you're my idol! can't believe you stopped by! will do! expect some disfigured grotesques next update.
