Here are is a series of quick studies I did last week.
Concepts for a larger project started by the
concept art club at school, involving the creation
of a gas giant planet and all the flora and fauna.

These are the floating landmasses that go up and down
in the atmosphere, reaching heights that freeze the surface
and kill all life, then dropping down and beginning life
all over again.

The new inhabitants have little understanding of what
the strange landformations are, but attempt to preserve them.

Hey! About time you started your own sketchbook. I love your landscapes, especially the sketches, so you must post more. Although, your painted ones are visually stunning too so...

I'd crit you, but since I'm a character designer, I have nothing to say. Beautiful work, please continue to post lots and lots!

btw - have any spare time to continue work on that children's book? If so, what do you need from me?

Skrunchey Is that you Tye? Thought you lived in Hawaii! Remember that painting workshop we took with Bill Cumming, wasn't that great. He wouldn't give me the customary small painting at the end, like he did everyone else, said I could be a gallery painter and wouldn't give me one until I painted more. Said digital didn't count! Guess I'll never get one. You still doing any traditional painting?

Yes, I still want to do the children's book wif ya! Right now I have a project going with a bunch of folks, illustrating/animating "Thirteen Ways of Looking At a Blackbird" by Wallace Stevens, but the deadline is in the Fall. Let's get back to doing one layout per month. I'll finish the title page and do some sketches for some others. All you need to do is keep drawing the kid and family members and then all the farm animals! They are going to be awesome!

Going to a Civil War Reinactment tomorrow at Port Gamble, hopefully will have some sketches to post but I haven't sketched in awhile, so probably not!

Yep it's me, still living up at the Canadian border. Never been to Hawaii, but still really want to go and check out the volcanoes and lava tubes. The painting workshop was great! It took me only 5 years to snag one of Bruce Sharp's demo paintings. I try to do traditional, but alas I keep getting pulled back to the digital canvas (kids will let me work a lot better on the computer). Still juggling kids, work and art. I start teaching creative computer classes for the community ed. dept. at WCC, this summer... I am really excited. Plus, I am slowly getting my personal site up durbindigital.com, working with James and Rachel in our "free" time, doing a little bit of freelance work on the side, and trying to keep up with 4 kids. It all keeps me happily busy. And I am so glad you have a sketchbook on here, it will help me keep my motivational levels up, and I might actually get some personal works done take care and I look forward to many more updates!

Here's something I made today, was looking at the current Solomon's Temple E.O.W.
and couldn't help but play around with the golden seraphim.
I kinda fancy they came to life when no one was in there. . .

But I better get busy and make the environment.

As to the process, I like to collect a variety of images to collage
and work from, in this case it was fetuses and death masks of famous poets,
and pregnant women. Those that announce life and death.

Ah yes...THAT animation. Sadly, it hit a snag and has come to halt. I was quite bummed too, as we had finished boards and everything. But, when the difference of opinion is regarding theology, what are you going to do?

So didja get any sketches at Port Gamble? I loved John's email about it, but I had to work today.

As for the children's book, I won't be able to do much of anything until I'm done with this temp job. You'll notice I haven't posted in awhile *ahem* because of it. Still, I'll try. If you can, post some sketches of the next page's background? I work better if I know what the environment is that the characters are supposed to be in. Are we good for the opening page with the rooster and all?

I just noticed - on that last painting - do you take found images and layer them in there and then start painting on top of them after you've messed with filters and such? 'Cause I could swear there's a butterfly wing in there in the second figure. Very cool regardless - definitely not in my ballpark.

ps - you'll never believe this, but my current job is typesetting. When they hired me, they said they knew it was the area I had the least experience, but they thought I had 'hidden qualities'. Since they haven't booted me out yet, I guess they were right! (But it's still a boring job)

Ah, yes, the tutorials. Of course I have them, always make a step-by-step doc on every piece.
When fledgling robin I am caring for finally flies away, I'll have more time.

Hey, Teigrob here's the rooster quick doodle?
Looks like the rooster is about to eat the tractor.
I need to change the angle of the ground to make it look higher in the air.
I will also make a small companion image of the rooster on the barn
weather- vane to give it a sense of placement and scale.
Probably will function as a small illustration on the title page.

This will be a fun project, so lets do a "storyboard" of the pages,
then do one image per month. What?! a goal?

A goal?!? *gasp* Darn, that requires work. I'm still working overtime too - but only through next week, then I'll have more time! And yes, I got your email, I just literally have not had time to sit at the computer for ages, let alone sketch anything but hurried stuff at work. So be patient! (What's our next illustration going to sorta be about, anyway? Or is that open to interpretation at this point?) I shall have some things for you soon.

The robin finally flew away yesterday, or was eaten by a cat.
You know which one I am imagining! Although he had disappeared for three days before
then heard my voice inside and flew straight into the window. That was another week of rehab, sigh. but now I have time to paint!

I spent a few hours today putting together a pdf of the storyline and
list of main characters (you're job!)

We need Charlie first, then the Mother, and then the Father, baby Mary being last for the first few pages.

I will start knocking some layout ideas around while you work on drawing Charlie's model sheet!
Next sketch him in a position that has him looking out a window, with glee in his body language, maybe waving at the tractor?
giggle, giggle, this is gonna be fun!

Here's tonight's doodles, the concept art club at school is creating

is a small parasite. Thought I would join in. These are quick studies
of something that has a hard exoskeleton with wide legs it can
draw around itself like a shield. Thanks for the idea, Willy!
