facosta Sketchbook - Update Nov 11th

    Hi everybody,

My name is Fernando Acosta and I'm from Colombia, South America. Originally an Electrical Engineer who got tired of that profession, I decided to go and study 3D modeling and Game Art and Design in Vancouver. There I learned all about Concept Art and just fell in love with it. I was also fortunate enough to be able to go and attend the Montreal Workshop, where I made the choice to become a better artist and work on my drawing and painting skills.

Although I've laid low mostly around the forum, I visit it continually and I hope by starting this thread to become a better member, participate more and more importantly to learn from all the wonderful artists that are part of this forum.

So here are a couple of sketches I've made for a project I'm helping on. It's mostly a story about North American Native American Indians meet Conan.

I would really appreciate any comments or criticism you may have on them. If you want you can also take a look at my blog and site for more of my art.

Thanks for looking and please do say hi

    Fernando

emba: Hey Petra, thanks again. So more cats for your tattoo will come tomorrow. how's that maze of your coming along?

28chelseaslater: Hey thanks for the kind words. Actually being an electrical Engineer in Colombia doesn't pay as much as in the rest of the world. Let's say I made the same amount of money in my first job as an average guy does in the States at Mac Donalds....

Ismail: Hey thanks!! you should post your stuff here as well, share with the rest of us your awesome creature designs!!!!

Ok so here a small update for you some face paint designs and some illustrations thumbs. what do you guys think?

    Ok,

First of all I just wanted to say sorry for not posting more often. I was working hard on my portfolio and then on some smaller projects.

In November of last year I was lucky enough to get picked up by a Canadian games studio. We're already coming to March and I'm still waiting for my visa. I really do hope I get it soon as I have been looking forward to starting my new job as a concept artist for many months now. So please wish me luck!!!!!!

Anyways, in January I decided to pick up my pencil again and sketch. I had not used a pencil for years, so It was nice coming back to it.

Here are a couple of pencil sketches. Some were from imagination, some from photo reference and one was a study after Wes trying to learn from his shading technique...Still working on it. Please let me know what you guys think.

The other images are from some, toy cars, and some were inspired while listening to the Harry Potter Audiobooks. I love drawing small thumbs.

Please leave your comments and crits. I'm still working on my pencil shading so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi everyone,

I hope you guys liked the pencil sketches. Here are a couple of digital ones. Some are sketches for fun and one is a color study. My first attempt at one, way too muddy and not very defined, but I'm working on them.

I still want to finish this rhino dude and take him to zbrush.

Please leave you comments and crits, I'd really like to know what you guys think or can recommend.

    Thanks for watching,

    Fernando

really great stuff here. cool concepts throughout. i really dig all the thumbnails you got kicking off. all i can say is in your paintings try to push your values a bit more to give more contrast. keep it up.

    Hey Everyone,

Chupacabra:Thanks!!! I will do so. I guess it's a matter of more practice and time.

Emba: Hey Petra, thanks for your comments. I'm really glad you liked my newer drawings. Can't wait to see more stuff from you too!!!

Merlkir: Hehehe...thanks for your kind words. As for the girls, I've recently seen many beautiful girls pass my window as I've been sketching...Guess that's always a good motivator and excellent source of inspiration.

thesadpencil: Thanks. I agree with you and it's something I will definitely work to push the contrast and values some more.

PerinGalitte: THANKS!!! You are very kind!!! I'm glad you liked it and thanks for the stars

Amir the night wolf: Thanks!!! Will do

Ok, so in an effort to post here more often and to practice as well, I decided to enter the Dominance War III. It's really fun and most of the entries I've seen rock. Check out robogabo's entry on his exclusive sketchbook....he's a machine, very cool stuff!!

Anyways, here's what I've got so far. I'm trying to do a character called the Crimson Pirate. Imagine a Mad Max like world, all desert land very few lakes that once where oceans. My character is a lone pirate on this world. He's from the water tribe and uses his magic to summon the creatures that once lived in the oceans and that now have adapted to this new worls.

I wanted him to be a mix between a samurai and a viking with a seashell theme. Right now I only have one seashell element on his shoulder and it doesn't really fit in with the rest of the design. So I may either take it away and do something different on his shoulder or add some things on his sword and around his hips to balance a little bit better the design.

I'd really like to hear your crits and suggestions. Thanks for watching.

    hello everyone,

it's been a long time since my last post. Working over here in Canada has been a pretty fun experience. Definitely leaning a lot and now I'm even leading a project which has been very cool as well. Doesn't leave me too much time to draw at home though, but now that Winter is coming, there will plenty of time to catch up.

    Anyways, let's start this off:

    1) This was an image I did for a sketchblog at work. The theme was underwater monsters and since I hadn't really tried doing an underwater painting I decided to study from a psd from Coro Kauffman.

I basically studied layer by layer and tried to understand his approach towards drawing such a moody underwater scene. Then borrowing his composition I set out to do mine.

It was a really fun study and great use of my time. Again thanks to Coro for sharing his psd with us.

    2) the next 3 images were done for pitch a at work. They didn't go with that idea, so I was allowed to post them here. I had 2 days to do them so they are pretty quick and have lots of mistakes in them, but they got the point whih was the important part.

    3) The commander sketches are for a personal project I'm currently working on. I want my portfolio to be up to date with today's lines of games, so I will be working on both a sci-fi and fantasy theme. These ae just some sketches for the main characters costume.

So much still left to do...Anyways, hope you guys like them and as always C&C are always welcome. You can also just drop by to say hi, I do that all the time

Later and thanks for dropping by,

    Fer

    Hi Fer

My favorite is the underwater picture, I think the depth of field is really nice on it and i love the highlights on things.... and of course the blue tint convinces me even more.

I like all the presentations of your work. it always looks finished.

    Keep up the good work!
