Awesome stuff nonie. Really cool lines. You have a real fast and fun feel to a lot of your sketches, keep it up.
Mark - I'll probably post it yeah. Just gotta get it off the netbook
MattGamer - I like felt tip pens - Staedtler Pigment Liners, Fabriano pens, and this awesome fat Pentel sign pen. I like a thick line cuz it keeps me moving fast and trying to be fearless (you may notice, for me the smaller the pen tip the more studied and careful the lines). I don't think before, but I think a lot during - it's hard to keep proportion in control! Constantly trying to relate each line to the others and trying to get those details in body language and shapes that get a bit of likeness and feeling. But I don't plan it, I just go. Just like my life
FraserMcT - thanks man, that's what I go for![]()

I miss you and jake already!!! Thank you so much for being pure awesome
I'll be out to san fran to visit as soon as I can manage! [which might be later than sooner...but hopefully < 1 year]
So many pen sketches! Very good.
Thanks for taking the time to make a good comment in my SB. I appreciate it alot.
Tex - miss you too man! Git out here
HunterKiller_ - Thanks for commenting in mine too
So I had this exciting idea for an exercise to do... I filled a folder with images of people, trying to get lots of different races and ages and angles and expressions. Then I got an image viewer that allows me to set the interval speed for viewing the images in a slideshow (I use FastStone) and set the interval to 2 minutes. Then I started trying to chip off some of this rust, since I've been doing so much more production work than sketching...
So... here's my first session.

You know I like your work, nonie. Your quick sketches? Love 'em. Wish I could be that fast and accurate.
That's a really awesome idea nonie! It'd be great if it's possible to set the images on random too! =) (I might try it sometime). Thank you for sharing that!!
And, fantastic quick sketches; I'd have incredible difficulty drawing distinctive faces with that limited an amount of time.
awesome exercise and fantastic drawings! gotta try that as well! thx for inspirering!
Great idea, I might do the same!
you are awesome, loving the pen sketches, realy confident lines, simple but so on the mark. Great shit.
oooh awesome! I've been meaning to do that since you mentioned it D:. Looks like it worked well. goodluck with your future battles

If John Goodman was one of the "models" then you even got some likeness in there. If not, oh well, cool stuff anyway!![]()
the john goodman from big lewbowski...man that is ace hahhahaha
that slideshow idea is really smart![]()
wow your figures are rad thanks so much for your comment in the art disscusion
your sb is full of amazing qualities an you ROCK'D that battle of the sexes challenge sssooo good
alesoun - thanksSpeed and accuracy are just a result of practice, I've still got a ways to go before I'm where I want to be though.
Eerin - yep, you can set images to random, that's how I do it, and you can just hit the arrow keys to skip any that come up that you've done recently, though doing them again after you've got a bit more practice is never a bad idea.
Josef K - thanks man, glad to share
Chupacabra - Try it! It's fun and it's great practice
Criminal Components - thank a lot! That's an area I try to practice a lot.
Mr. Delicious - yeah give it a tryI'm sure it fits in well with your study schedule somewhere.
MattGamer - yeah I tried the default Windows viewer firat and it wasn't really customizeable enough.
Bill - Oh yeah, that man has such an expressive face, he's probably got more appearances in my face folder than anyone else.
Texahol - Haha yeah it was a great shot, I didn't quite get the expression right but I settled for likeness anyway...
Grandmassa Mr. Spect - Ah the Battle of the Sexes piece was a blast to do! Glad you liked it!
Ok, here are some more head drawing drills, and some gestures. Some of the more contorted faces, I hit "back" and did 4 minutes instead of 2... More important to me to get it right than to go fast, even though the speed forces me to be more loose and quick. I'm focusing on strengthening my acting and on broadening the types and angles of faces I can draw so ones that I feel I'm learning a lot from I might give myself a little more time.
The photos I'm using are just collected from google and flickr searches, with terms like "fight" or "unposed" or actors (this works best when using the name of a movie or character so you don't get so many press shots), looking for different expressions and angles. Don't bother looking for specific emotions like "anger" because this just brings up badly-acted stock photos of businessmen yelling at their laptops and stuff like that. Sports and news images are good for expressions too, and sometimes just looking for a very common name like "Michael" will get nice unposed shots too. They don't have to be very large images since these are very quick drawings, but I do look for clear lighting as it's really hard to see the form when it's just omnidirectional indoor light. Really large images or ones where the whole head is not in the frame are a lot more difficult to draw from for this, as getting the proportion and placement of features and the structure of the skull are extremely important for getting any likeness (and just for getting the face and expression to look right at all).

lovely face studies ! the expressions are really well captured =) btw i hope you liked my "gift" (if it ever arrived). anyway, keep up the good job
The squiggly lines you're using to create some of the hairdos are pretty whimsical, like on the John Goodman looking guy second row third from the left, or the guy with glasses on the bottom left, http://www.conceptart.org/forums/att...2&d=1241567936. Just thought that was a nice contrast to the hand gestures I see you mostly using on these hedz, back and forth shading, or quickly encircling the general head shapes. Well I guess I'm obligated to call you out on that slideshow idea, I don't know how many other people I've seen mention it before.

fantastic work nonie! that slideshow technique is cool im gonna give it a try later, Thanks!![]()
awesome nonie!!! that looks like a lot of fun hehe.
Love the quick sketches, gonna have to try that out.
simply amazing! and I love the panels you did, subscribed too![]()
Call0ps - thanks manI don't think your present ever arrived... What did you send?
armando - yeah - I should push those freer lines a bit more. It's not my natural way of moving but I rather like it too. I guess if someone else has posted the slideshow idea I just haven't seen it anywhere- seems like it's new to a few others too so I'll suffer the agony of not being the first to think of it to continue spreading it around
Capital G - Hope you have fun with it, I sure do
Dished - yeah I'm enjoying it!
Sidharth - Yeah give it a go!
strings - Thanks!
More heads. Whee!

Nice nonie, I'll be doing these also
What an awesome and simple idea for studies! Thanks for the tip, nonie, I'll be sure to be crackin' out some head (or whatever!) studies with your method
The sketches are fantastic. Your ability to capture solid facial features with few strokes is truly enviable. I easily recognized some of the famous faces you drew, too! Wonderful work![]()

AsaB - Aw thanks. I'm glad it's useful for youGood luck with the studies, post em up when you do them!
DanielC - Why thank you sir! Keep rockin
Here are today's warm-ups. 2 minutes is starting to feel like a good long time - some of these are coming out better! But some suckAt least I'm not feeling so rusty anyway... I've noticed I tend to draw the initial head shape way too tiny and it ends up just being a line around the face area. I kind of scribble around really lightly until I have enough points of reference down to knock in the shadow shapes and the darks.
I also noticed that I started this thread 2 years ago today. WOo, happy birthday sketchy thread!
