MattGamer - I like felt tip pens - Staedtler Pigment Liners, Fabriano pens, and this awesome fat Pentel sign pen. I like a thick line cuz it keeps me moving fast and trying to be fearless (you may notice, for me the smaller the pen tip the more studied and careful the lines). I don't think before, but I think a lot during - it's hard to keep proportion in control! Constantly trying to relate each line to the others and trying to get those details in body language and shapes that get a bit of likeness and feeling. But I don't plan it, I just go. Just like my life

So I had this exciting idea for an exercise to do... I filled a folder with images of people, trying to get lots of different races and ages and angles and expressions. Then I got an image viewer that allows me to set the interval speed for viewing the images in a slideshow (I use FastStone) and set the interval to 2 minutes. Then I started trying to chip off some of this rust, since I've been doing so much more production work than sketching...

So... here's my first session.

alesoun - thanks Speed and accuracy are just a result of practice, I've still got a ways to go before I'm where I want to be though.

Eerin - yep, you can set images to random, that's how I do it, and you can just hit the arrow keys to skip any that come up that you've done recently, though doing them again after you've got a bit more practice is never a bad idea.

Bill - Oh yeah, that man has such an expressive face, he's probably got more appearances in my face folder than anyone else.

Texahol - Haha yeah it was a great shot, I didn't quite get the expression right but I settled for likeness anyway...

Grandmassa Mr. Spect - Ah the Battle of the Sexes piece was a blast to do! Glad you liked it!


Ok, here are some more head drawing drills, and some gestures. Some of the more contorted faces, I hit "back" and did 4 minutes instead of 2... More important to me to get it right than to go fast, even though the speed forces me to be more loose and quick. I'm focusing on strengthening my acting and on broadening the types and angles of faces I can draw so ones that I feel I'm learning a lot from I might give myself a little more time.

The photos I'm using are just collected from google and flickr searches, with terms like "fight" or "unposed" or actors (this works best when using the name of a movie or character so you don't get so many press shots), looking for different expressions and angles. Don't bother looking for specific emotions like "anger" because this just brings up badly-acted stock photos of businessmen yelling at their laptops and stuff like that. Sports and news images are good for expressions too, and sometimes just looking for a very common name like "Michael" will get nice unposed shots too. They don't have to be very large images since these are very quick drawings, but I do look for clear lighting as it's really hard to see the form when it's just omnidirectional indoor light. Really large images or ones where the whole head is not in the frame are a lot more difficult to draw from for this, as getting the proportion and placement of features and the structure of the skull are extremely important for getting any likeness (and just for getting the face and expression to look right at all).

The squiggly lines you're using to create some of the hairdos are pretty whimsical, like on the John Goodman looking guy second row third from the left, or the guy with glasses on the bottom left, http://www.conceptart.org/forums/att...2&d=1241567936. Just thought that was a nice contrast to the hand gestures I see you mostly using on these hedz, back and forth shading, or quickly encircling the general head shapes. Well I guess I'm obligated to call you out on that slideshow idea, I don't know how many other people I've seen mention it before.

armando - yeah - I should push those freer lines a bit more. It's not my natural way of moving but I rather like it too. I guess if someone else has posted the slideshow idea I just haven't seen it anywhere- seems like it's new to a few others too so I'll suffer the agony of not being the first to think of it to continue spreading it around

Here are today's warm-ups. 2 minutes is starting to feel like a good long time - some of these are coming out better! But some suck At least I'm not feeling so rusty anyway... I've noticed I tend to draw the initial head shape way too tiny and it ends up just being a line around the face area. I kind of scribble around really lightly until I have enough points of reference down to knock in the shadow shapes and the darks.





I also noticed that I started this thread 2 years ago today. WOo, happy birthday sketchy thread!
