Really love the environment that was inspired by your zoo sketching. The colors and subtleties really look good. Not sure about the cell shading kind of look to that last figure drawing. Really like the pencil sketches in post 159. Your standing figures have a nice weight and balance to them. Now keep doing more detailed figure paintings like 170. I'd love to see how they come out.

    Hi,
I had a scan of your sketch book today! Really cool work...couldnt stop sketching afterwards.

I remember before I went to university (to study fine art) I couldnt wait to be around people who loved drawing & whos work would inspire me and push me to improve! When I got there was hardly anyone intersted in drawing, most skipped classes & the few that were into it were wandering down the road of Conceptual Art (found objects/Modern art conceptual) one guy even scribbled on paper for half an hour and got more respect of my tutor than I did!!

Anyway this site provides me with what I wanted at university & that was artists who made me see how bad my stuff was!! Sounds weird but for me the greatest motivation is to see great work even if it makes you aware of your shotcomings!

Needless to say thats what i felt looking at your work, particuarly the character invention. How do you come with all those costumes??

Anyway keep it up....looking forward to seeing how it unfolds!

    Ed

the figure drawing from last night is very awesome. isn't it cool how much you can get away with by only having the shape of the form and just the core shadow? it's what i rely on a lot with my work.

Thanks so much for the comments

Stark - thanks. I don't mind having a bit of evidence showing in the bear piece... Kinda liked the lines showing.

GusTheRobot - yeah d00d! I don't always make it, this last week I went to the zoo instead, but I try to make it a point to be there, especially now that I'm working and don't get the daily figure practice anymore.

snubbed - yeah, I enjoy those more rendered out characters a lot. I have a couple in the works but they take longer

number777uk - That makes me really happy to hear, I'm glad I could inspire you Yeah, finding people who are truly dedicated to anything can be tough. I'm lucky to have a lot of friends who take art and getting genuinely better very seriously. As far as coming up with costumes... I people-watch a lot and ask myself questions about why some people make the impression they do... I also think about it the same way you think about composing a painting, have your focal points and lead the eye around the design... Same principles can be used. And it's really important to work as small and zoomed-out as possible as long as possible on each stage - you'll get a much more organized, iconic, and unified result that way. Thumbnails are so impotant!

donk: Yeah, and it's fun to work that way Even with a more rendered piece those have to be there to make something look nice and solid

Everyone else, thanks much for stopping by and commenting!

well done! that last 20 you show is the best by far. line quality and general shadow usage is great.
specially digging how you treated the hair, really nicely done.
some of the lines could be smoother, but now i'm just getting really picky, overall this is great stuff.

    kidult, BohemianChaos, thanks!

Blonde - yeah, I usually don't mind it that much when the model moves when it's only a 3-hour... I fake a lot, get it drawn in the first 20 minutes and then fudge things so they fit within that initial drawing. It was hard to get the shading on his chin to look right though.

GusTheRobot - My Graphire is my excuse for the messy lines And I'm a slow eater I guess I was procrastinating going in to work on a Saturday, heh.

    copperfire - thanks

Victor B - Yeah, I'm subscribed. Love that guy.

Monday night long pose! Getting quite tired of that mauve couch.

lol... I know what you mean. Modeling sessions *really* need to have a variety of sitting/lounging furniture. so many times my drawings are left floating awkwardly due to vexation from a surfeit selection.

    great image btw
the mauve couch looks especially realistic

In the meantime, I joined Dominance War... Here be some sketches. My character's a human light/holy magic user (I envision him as a super high level white knight or paladin, kind of a jaded antihero though)

cool concepts, really liking how he's turning out. Personally i'm more gravitating towards the looks with more robes/cloth that have armor bits poking out from underneath it. Like some sort of nomadic type i guess. Could also have a pretty interesting texture/color contrast if you went into rendering something like that.
depressing i couldn't stay at the sketchgroup longer, looked like fun.

Mark - Thanks! Yeah I'm more into the cloak+armor ones too. He doesn't really need to look nomadic, but I just like them better as designs.

Here's my CHOW, "hot male vampire pinup." I didn't really want to do a traditional pinup though and made it more of an illustration, tried to get some narrative in there... Dude's about to jump in the shower after some lovin' and realizes as his reflection fades that he's been bitten. So he barely counts as a vampire yet but yeah. It counts, right?

hah. i like your take on the vampire idea, clever indeed.
only crit is it would be better to see him AND his disappearing reflection at the same time, right now it seems like he's disappearing, and not simply loosing his reflection.
that being said still really cool, the lipstick on his neck/shoulder is a good touch.

Nice sketches and liking your last piece. Keep rockin! Although his right (our left) eye could use more love. And maybe use a sharper pencil. Lines are losing their sickness
