Moonrage - Thank you!!! You hit the nail in the head on many things there. It's so easy to get lost thinking about technique and process and forget about basic things like composition. My last few pieces have been very rock-oriented because it's the easiest way to implement rough and interesting shapes but I'll make sure to make my topics more varied from now on. And to try make my environments have a point, like I've been told earlier.

Velocity Kendall - Thanks for the honest comment! I like that brush because of the ease of adding a rough texture with it but I'll have to try widen my selection. I know I've been overusing it.

EDIT: forgot to add my sketch.
I kept in mind what Moonrage said with this one:

Now that's more like it. This one is far more appealing as a comp. Good aerial perspective. Its like I'm on the edge of this canyon, looking for a way down to the building, there's a microstory forming. Far more interesting shapes, and far more consistent too. The ones that form the woods and lakes seem far more organic, than the rocks, you have two different terrains which is evident through line and form - nice one.
If I'd advice, you'll benefit from getting some of that green as a reflection into the rocks -in a real situation, it would be a tiny nuance it will be there. The vise versa stands again - the trees reflects the rocks too - which means some warmer areas and marks in the trees.
And something I learned while stylizing for university - do not use the same or close colors in the positive and negative spaces- what I mean is - The ground and lakes are the material, positive space, the sky is the negative. If you look at the lakes, they actually look like holes, in which you look to the sky again, as if the earth is hollow. Imply trough color or texture, that water is a material thing, not a giant hole in the ground.

PS: loved the flour sack exercise, gonna be sure to do It. Your focus on environments pays off by the way. You remind me of Andreas Rocha, because of the clean edges and lasso. Be sure to check him out if you havent.

Moonrage - Thanks for the good advice again! I did the changes and looking at the versions back and forth, damn how right you were. Thanks for the encouragement too. I don't remember seeing Rocha's work (name was familiar though) but the mood and colors in his stuff is awesome!

A study from Stargate, this time with Painter. It took two hours probably but I liked how the colors got better and better with blending, unlike with PS. With the pace of the work, I can see why people block in the colors with Photoshop though.

I've hauled my ass to Tampere where my current job as a game graphic artist is situated. It's been a blast, I've learned a lot and it's great to get to draw as a profession, even for the few months my contract was made for. Now that I've gotten most of the difficulties related to moving and a few days' stomach flu out of the way, maybe I'll be able to concentrate more on personal work too than on the past two weeks.

A bunch of flour sacks and figures based on that:

Gabriel_Feix - Thanks a lot! I like that one too. Mostly thanks to luck that the colors are so vibrant.

Ville_S - Thanks! Glad if you got something out of it.

MonkeYoakum - Long time no see! Thanks man!

Weashell - Thanks, glad you like them!

I inked the kind ogre with a good size 3 Kolinsky brush. Armed with that great tool, I wasn't able to screw up the lines completely, even though the line weights could be much better controlled.

man, i'd forgotten how good your pencils were, those heads are awesome. I love how you've put so much personality into them, even though they're photostudies some look like minature cartoons and caricatures.

MonkeYoakum - Thanks! The first 7 pages were from reference. The mining pic is one I like too, I made some lucky color choices and felt like the mood got established by itself.

Jessibelle - Thanks! I try. Part of them are from head.

I've been busy with a commission but here's an environment from today. I painted it while listening to the prog rock band Yes and it has a lot of Roger Dean influence (he's painted most/many of their CD covers).

Really like the drawing style on those faces, very crisp! but some of scale of the eyes is a little too large in a few of the faces, fix that up and they'll be top notch. Also I love the environment sketch of that mountain!

The train is really good, could have used a bit more smoke to make it more grand/epic I think.
The lighting in your environments is quite nice, has some good contrast without being to dark.
