Whose made thier Website?

Yes, whose has a website that they've made themselves?

I'm trying to get it organised (yeah, like that will ever happen) but I just do not know which program/s to use. I mean I want it to look nice not cheap and crappy. Any recommendations or can someone point me to a good tutorial site? Pretty please?

i made mine entirely out of FlashMX.

Basically, I created a few scenes, with a few buttons that go to them, and then added the picture links and text. It was relatively simple, I may have the tutorial I learned this stuff laying around somewhere...

coded (php, mysql, xhtml, css, javascript) in UltraEdit
WordPress used for the blog.
phpMyAdmin used to admin the database.
+some crappy graphics not worth mentioning...

I don't know about any good tutorial sites...I usually just google if I run into any problems.
For help with PHP and MySQL, check out the official sites which both contain surprisingly good documentation.

if you want to go the way of html (superior!), check out www.w3schools.com

if you could be arsed messing around wih them, there a few decent content management systems out there, although they're mostly more than you or i would ever need.

I did mine. Combination of Photoshop, Perl, Flash, CSS, and some hand coded html. Not done yet, plus I need to add current artwork. But, yeah. I made mine.

i'm ashamed to say i use dreamweaver to design such a site. (i still need to look up the html for a link)

it's text-only so not much killer pizzaz factor. just wanted to mention, and not that you asked for my opinion, but being an artist doesn't mean u need a super duper fancy website. most important thing in my opinion is quick and simple access to your work. i personally dislike visiting portfolio sites w/ splash pages, flash, overworked graphics, shit that opens a new window, etc. you don't have to be a lazy sob like me ... you can still "design" and stuff. just think about what the viewer has to go through when checking your stuff out.

photoshop + fireworks + dreamweaver, all it took. I started with an anycities account with ez build pages where t spoke my language, then figured out how that stuff translated into html and built from there. Dreamweaver has great tutorials built right in. They might help. I only used fireworks to slice up my image for iframes (you'll learn what all that means. All in due time...)

While you're learning the ropes (might take awhile, that w3schools.com might be best), try not to think in terms of html limitations. Just look at a ton of websites, take notes on what you like and dislike, and come up with the design you like most. Like I said, just don't let it become a stale stamp of a million other sites.

There's lots of potential in websites. Just find whatever fits your goals the best.

Hand coded in Xhtml and CSS, no WYSIWYG editors, I didn't like how they built the code for their sites on any of them. I wanted to be able to come back two years later and understand what I made from scratch. Used menalto image gallery for the gallery and Movabletype for the news/blog part of it, but I may switch that soon to something else.

It took me 4 months to learn from scratch how to build the webpage, I studied a lot of the information at www.w3schools.com That site was very helpful, I'd definitely recommend it. I also grabbed a bunch of other webpages I liked and picked through their code to see how they did it.

Grab tutorials as well and do those.

I've only just started mine using freewebs.com

they have a really good program if you sign up using their basic free beginners account (plus its free

) so you can get started..then you can always get your domain name at any time, switch your account up, and learn how to use the program...they have really cool tuturials that show you step by step how to do anything and everything on them...very cool and very easy...you can look at my site see if its what you like...they also have quite a few different templates to choose from...so don't be thrown off by my girlie garden theme

Everyone loves to make flash sites, but no one likes to use them.

I use Notepad or NoteTab Light to code. The latter is more advanced, has a little scripting language to automate tasks for you, and a ftp client, but I use WS_FTP instead, for no reason.

You can do a lot with just 10 basic HTML tags and a little CSS. I haven't tried XML much yet but it'd probably work to store the gallery structure with, so you don't have to repeat code for each item manually.

I don't have much spare time to build a website so usually I'll redo everything and put it up in 3 days. Takes me forever to come down with an appropriate colour scheme tho...
I need to learn about asp and self generating pages... But as Prom said, I hate visiting flash websites so I won't touch that for my own thing.

Lily, I think that's kinda good for a starter. Nice and clean (although it takes hours to load a page, probably your ISP, so it's not your fault). It's even untabled! The only thing I'd nitpick is that you named your html-files in a numeric scheme (01.htm etc). That's not good, because filenames are one of the most important things when you want to get found by search engines like Google. Same goes for picture filenames and <title> tags. Otherwise, good work!

The easiest way to do it is to learn some basic HTML from W3Schools and create the site in PhotoShop. Use its Slicing Tools to create a table and edit the HTML in Notepad to add your links.

i think that is a good way to learn and did my first site like that.

now, i have something that i can update in a minute. it's not super exciting but it doesn't have to be if the art is (which is another story of course).

i did it all in iweb and the code is all wack and it's got some strange decisions but i'm extremely happy with it - cause i just get to put my work up. quick.

I also used notepad to create mine. It's a pain if you have zero clue what you're doing of course, as I've had trouble with making it a liquid layout (a layout that looks the same across all resolutions) and also people complain about the mouseovers (they only work if you hit the text part, doh). Keep that in mind when you're making it!

There are some great CSS tuts out there, so it depends on how you'd like to organize your site. I'll reinforce the good advice of others here: stick to keeping it simple and free of too many fancy graphics, particularly if you're creating it primarily as a means of showcasing your work for potential employers. Blonde, I can't believe you got me. Time to start checking the link address for everything again...

Here's mine. It sucks quite heartily, but it's just the product of my intro to web design class. The fact that I'm using a free host means that the flash intro takes AGES to get going (scroll down for the enter button). Expect to see much better from me next year

(and it's just filled with placeholder text, it was just a project, not intended for actual self promotion)
