My Sketchbook! (crit the crap out!)

I've been watching this site for a long time, but just recently got a camera so i can post things. I'm gonna hopefully get a tablet soon as well, which should help with getting my sketches up. Im looking for lots of critiquing and constructive criticism, so lay it on. Thanks in advance if anyone posts.

The first post shows some good work and observation.
The skull is very strong. It has some character (the cigarette and headphones), good tonal range and energy in the actual strokes.

    Look forward to seeing more.

I think your two strongest drawings are the skull and the one of the guy's back. Your understanding of forms is strongest in those two pieces.

I think your focus on faces is already improving how well your heads and faces are coming out. They're more symmetrical and hang together better, which is something I think that comes out when you have a better understanding of what you're drawing.

A suggestion I might offer on faces is to sketch out the simplest shapes and proportions of the face before you start with the details. The painting of the girl with the hat is the best example of a drawing that could've benefited from this. If you look carefully, you can see that one of her eyes is much smaller than the other one. A basic under-drawing does a lot to prevent this kind of thing from happening, although it can still happen of course.

I hope that's the kind of critique you were looking for. I'm inspired by the serious studies you're doing! Keep it up!

thank you, that is the kinda feedback im looking for. i totally agree that the underlying layout is critical. heres teh digitalized version of the sketch posted in the last thread, i still have to add highlighting and everything, its just blocks of color right now, and theres something funny with the pants, i think theyre too low. thanks again.

sorry, the pencils are sorta hard to see properly, im just using a camera and theyre quite light. a scanner might do better. if anyone has any suggestions for how to take clear pictures of light pencil drawings id love to hear it. please crit me hard! its the only time i get feedback, and the reason i post things at all! thank you! -dyl

woo hoo. lots of sketching, drawing, a figure sitting. i would really love and appreciate some criticism. that would be swell. i'm mostly self taught, and this site is an excellent and important platform for me to gather some critical feedback. keep up the good work everybody, theres amazing things going on here.

ps. sorry for the strange pencil shades and contrasts, i tried to make it as easy to make out the drawings as possible, but i tend to draw light and use a camera instead of a scanner. anyone have any good advice for taking photos of drawings? i find a low flash to work well, then pushing up contrast, and tweaking other settings in an editor.
    thanks.

Hey perilous, great work! I like it a lot.
If I were you, I would forget just a little about studying pictures, and would leave color aside too (just for a while). Insted, you may want to focus in the figure. I would try to draw it the Vilppu way, I don't know if you know him. I mean, if possible, try to decompose the form in basic shapes (cylinders, and boxes), and worry about the main gesture. Try to draw from mind, and not only from a living model.

    Icon gestures

Lennon: Thanks for the advice, I've actually kinda been feeling stuck in the mud with my stuff lately, and i think this was exactly the direction i needed a nudge in. Sometimes the smallest words can have enormous repercussions! I tried to find a Vilppu book at the library, but there is none. Ill look him up right now, for now, some more gesture-ish sketches done in class (not art class!) Thanks again. Name: Photos-3.jpg

    stuff from the other day

was going to put up some stuff the other day but my camera batteries died! here it is. The figure is an hour 1/2 figure drawing from a drop-in model sitting, the bob dylan one is from a picture, and is still very unfinished (mostly 4H still!) but im pushing myself to develop patience to finish drawings. I often leave drawings unfinished or rush the endings, and its hard to end up with polished work, so I'm pushing myself just to be slow and methodical with this one. Name: Photos-1.jpg

    Icon Back on the horse

After stepping away for a long time I'm back with new sketches. HG Wells is from a Karsh Photography book, all others are sourced from deviantart. 10-15 min for the girl w/ no head and the dude, 30 for hg wells, 1.5 hr for the girl reclining. I'm trying to focus on longer studies, attention spans are not my strong suit. Thanks for stopping by, I'd love some good critical feedback.
